The step gun hull has been spun at slow speeds, with no mechanical failures, in the past. It can be avoided, but not by the proper placement of a warning decal.
I used to think the straight bottom was better then the twin step. I was wrong. The step is better technology, there is no porpising. less drag, better fuel efficiency and of course better cruise and top speed. You get all this with very little to give up. Can you make high speed turns sure as long as you know what you are doing and don't turn to sharp. I don't find myself making many high speed turns even when I had my straight bottom. Accidents happen unfortunately. I am not sure what happened here and I would love to know as well, but there are a ton of step boats out there since 2000 and only a few that have rolled or spun. Just my .02

4195 I believe all of your points are valid , but I would venture to say that in a panic or sudden maneuver situation the straight bottom hull would be a little more stabile and /or predictable . I remember having to avoid a PWC in my 302 formula and time did not permit a controlled sweeping turn but a quick hard left to avoid a collision with a PWC that made a sudden u turn right into my path with a young a kid on board no less . In this situation I don't beleive a stepped hull would have executed that maneuver as safely as my the straight hull did. Just my personal opinion .
