This kid is a work of art. I think people are so down on the younger generation because of there overall lack of energy to work...that they see this kid who has energy and is doing stuff, as a promising young talent. Time will tell, but I see this kid in his current state as a SALESMAN. A bullchitter SALESMAN. IMHO. |

My first boatride was in a boat my grandfather built by hand. The first boat I ever owned my dad built for me. I spent more hours than I care to remember as a kid and teenager helping my dad build boats. Before I learned to drive I was mixing resin, wetting out glass and experimenting with epoxy. I have learned more in the last year hanging out at Dave's shop workking on my boat and helping him than I ever thought I knew before. This kid needs to shut his mouth, pay his dues and learn how to use the talent he has. He needs to cross bridges, not burn them. |

I honestly believe the kid had driver and talent, He does not yet have the skill. Whats unfortunate is help has been offered to him in many forms. When your 19 you think you know it all, as you get older you realize you didnt know chit.

So I have been reading this thread for a while now..mostly for entertainment..but i feel now its time to throw my hat in the ring! Mostly because I want to be the first post on page 75) Its been my experience through my life that its sometimes better to shut my mouth and open my ears..I too was 19 and knew it all..hell I moved out when I was 17 and have been on my own ever since..because at 17 I knew EVERYTHING and wondered how my 'ol man became so stupid (the same man that taught me how to twist a wrench and started my love for being a gear head) It didnt take long for that perspective to change and wonder how the 'ol man became so wise about life in such a short amount of time! I have been around boats since I was a kid..operating them..working on them..laying glass..etc..but never in a professional scale and I would never disrespect guys on here that do this for a living and are the true artists by slapping some paint on a boat and degreasing an engine and say Im a custom boat builder. (I am however a Merchant Marine Engineer..so if anyone needs their 16 cylinder 2500HP EMD worked on give me a shout) Bahahahahaha I worked my way up to where I am in my career by OJT and listening to old salty dogs..taking my lumps when needed and paying attention..again..mouth closed ears open..I am now much older than 19 and new to performance powerboats. When I got to the point in my life a few years ago that I could afford to buy into the sport I have loved for my whole life I did so..slightly cocky at the time thinking I too could do it all and no idea of the cost to bring a boat back to life PROPERLY I lost a lot of money..and here I am now with another project on my hands and have found so much support and help from OSO members which I appreciate..I do my own mechanical work because..well.. thats what I do..but I still ask questions to the guys who have 'been there..done that..have a T-Shirt" (some apparently mustard stained from a poker run) for two reasons..they have had the experience which is more valuable than reading any manual..and because it will save me time and money! Money being the driving force for me to do my own work as well as knowing the quality and hell..I simply like to F@#$*ng twist wrenches. I will however be attempting to do some paint work as well as small gel repairs myself on my old Gun because although very reasonable I simply dont have the money to pay someone else to do it and I like the pride factor in saying I did it myself..plus being a learning experience..will it be Glassdave quality..definitely not but even though Im not taking my boat to him to do the work he is more than happy to take the time to answer my questions and give me support..thats what boating is all about to me..like minded people enjoying the sport and helping one another..a brotherhood..part of the draw to the sport along with the adrenaline rush! I have no dog in this fight that has been created on this thread..although entertaining these past few weeks for me sitting out here off the coast of Africa..counting down the days Im done turning wrenches on this boat so I can get home to my own project and hopefully squeeze out a few last weekends at the islands..Ill end this long winded post with a final thought and advice from an old salty dog to a young buck full of piss and vinegar..the people I find most dangerous in the industry I am in are the ones who think they know everything and can do it all themselves better and faster than anyone. There is a reason that there are sayings like 'Jack of all trades master of none' 'I know a lot about a little but a little about a lot' 315 I give you credit for your enthusiasm for the sport and drive to start a business in it..there is however a reason there are specialist like XT that only do interior..Glassdave that only does paint and glass..because they have mastered the art
Just a little friendly advice from an old dog thats still learning new tricks daily! Best of luck in your endeavor.. |

Just a little friendly advice from an old dog thats still learning new tricks daily! Best of luck in your endeavor.. we met because of this place, talked a few times and I think I helped save you from a endless money pit situation and you are much happier now, I love to help out and offer advice, you and I gave ideas to each other and we listened, I don't think I ever treated you like I was above you when we first started talking, always willing to learn new things and meet new people, met Glassdave the same way also....he told me to stop putting money in my old Baja and start fresh... he's a good dude too! |
You did at least open my eyes to research the market and realize what I would get back if I ever sold the Formula vs the money I already knew it would take to get it to what I would consider a boat to be proud of..not pristine..just a head turner..it made me realize if Im going to dump my blood sweat tears time and wallet into something then make it something I want to enjoy for years to come and stop thinking about turning a profit..my boat still has faded stripes and old interior due top a few setbacks this season..but I spent almost every weekend on leave on an island drinking beer and talking boats with guys..my **** wont be done overnight..but you bet your ass it will be done right and if that takes years so be it..if it floats and runs..I have a place to drink beer and get laid..Im happy..work in progress..like I told you before until I can afford paint Ill enjoy the patina..with some guidance from Glassdave though I believe I will attempt to re lay the bow stripes myself so wish me luck..you can come help sand and buff FF..Ill buy Bubbas BBQ!!
