Default steering issue question

quick question here. First cig ive built, so might be a dumb question, on my cafe with TRS's the steering is VERY stiff... like both hands needing to turn.. on our 99 forumla the steering is almost like power steering.. when the boats on its fine, but when its not, you can hardly turn it.. i know its cable steering and was a salt water boat for some time... so can i get a new cable due to maybe the old one being siezed up? or take apart the gimbals and grease and clean up? i was thinking about doing external steering but figured i would try and get the steering as good as i can get it before deciding that or not. Ive met alot of local go fast guys that are helping me with the mechanics because making it looking good is my thing, but figured i would try the board.

if you have advice please post it! if you got bull****, tell your wife about it, not me!

check your gimbles. the power assist will over ride the seized up pins and could crack your rings. ive got wingplates for trs if you wanna go hydraulic. i also have a pr of spotless trs gimbles and transom plates if you wanna put some clean ones on the boat

your upper and lower pin. take your tie bar and steering off and more your drives side to side. also turn your wheel and see if it still binds. that will tell you what is bad

Yes you can get a new cable. For cheap money you can get a kit with new helm and cable. Obviously hydraulic would be much much better

My steering was impossible when not at speed. but once i installed the helm hydraulic kit, it was 1000x better & can turn it with a finger.

i got looking at the boat... and i see is got power steering.. so tomorrow im gunna fire it up and run it and see if it gets any easier.. one more... now, it might have just been another long day, but i made my way to the helm, and was taking apart the throttles, and it seems like its witch craft to take them apart to unhook from the levers. need to repaint the dash obv but because at half throttle the carbs are WOT so i want to figure out why... i was thinking the wrong cables, but i looked at the cables and it doesnt seem like they were put in any later than everything else. anyone experience this ever?

Dis connect the steering from the gimble. wiggle the drives, and then turn the wheel. Which ever end is tight there is your problem. Though I would still try it with the motor running first.
