My Flat Deck transom replacement and paint project

5 Attachment(s)
Well it all started out 3 years ago. We were building new blower motors and when I had the exhaust out I noticed some rotted wood. A transom replacement at this point was out of the question. After spending a bunch of money on the engines and that the engines were already back in the boat, it was on to plan B. Plan B was to dig out as much rot as I could and fill it with a penetrating epoxy. So far so good on my plan. The past 3 years everything has gone great with the boat with other upgrades happening every winter. Now I have to take some time for the transom. Just recently I have gone down to the storage building and started the disassembly process and getting some ideas on how I want to re-rig the engine compartment. As for the paint, I plan to continue the blue to the rear of the boat and transom.

looks like a couple of us have lots of work to do!!! I should paint my bilge black then I won't see the oil leaks lol

Keep pics coming, look forward to it, and good luck!

MILD THUNDER 12-07-2014 06:29 PM

Dislike!!!!!

Are you going to raise the X dimension while you're in there ???? :drool1:

sonic700 12-07-2014 06:29 PM

Thanks man. We sure do! That's the reason its black. It always looking clean and all the polished aluminum stands out a little more.

sonic700 12-07-2014 06:32 PM

LOL what do you dislike??? Nope its staying. I would have to build new hatches

jeff32 12-07-2014 06:55 PM

Kept it 3 years with soft transom? Did not leaked? Or flexed? Nothing broke while using it?

sea6 12-07-2014 07:27 PM

From reading the above you are going to jump right into the transom removal. I have contemplated project boats that needed a transom, but don't know if I could swing it. Have you done this before or am I just thinking there's more to it than there really is?

sonic700 12-07-2014 07:31 PM

It might have been longer not sure. I would get a slight bit of water but nothing out of the ordinary, and no cracks, nothing ever broke. There were no signs until the removal of the exhaust

I will be cutting it all out, doing some of the prep work, and cutting the new wood. As far as installing the transom wood and fiberglass, that will be done by a fiberglass shop

MILD THUNDER 12-07-2014 07:49 PM

I'd be willing to bet there are a lot more boats out there with rotted transoms or stringers that don't know it .

I'm sure when sonic700 is all done it will be solid again!

I think your tackling the hardest part yourself, might as well just finish it. Patience and planning ahead it's not that difficult. Well after you read all of Dave's threads 3 times and call him 5 times lol

79formula 12-07-2014 08:54 PM

Found out the transom on my new formula is wet. I was talking to a friend about how many boats are soft and they dont even know it. I have done one before, and am doing my formula this week. Its really not that bad.

I figured they do this all time and I can save some money doing the dirty work. They are getting the boat to do some of the body work and the paint plus they warranty their work.

bigboat28 12-08-2014 06:41 AM

Who is installing transom and doing your paint work?

Unlimited jd 12-08-2014 07:30 AM

That's cool, just make sure they lay it up properly. I've had a few glass guys around here fix a go fast as of it were a sea ray or pro-line. So I ended up doing it myself anyway. Oh joy.... Speaking of poor quality, reminds me I need to finish a formula stringer job today,

sonic700 12-08-2014 08:34 AM

Right now Nabbers. Hes down by where the boat is and has done work for me in the past. He does all the transom work for Pier 57

From what I've seen they know what to do

ICDEDPPL 12-08-2014 03:29 PM

Whoa Ryan posting pics of a project!?:drool1:
You paint that back blue the boat is gonna look shorter, don`t say I didn`t tell you.:silenced:
Good Luck, looks like your`e making some good headway. I`m just glad thats ONE thing that I don`t need to do since it was brand new when I got the boat.
You should have Nabbers make those pickup channels like he did for Tick Tack I bet it`s worth a mile or two

Does the red back make mine look short?

Or trim down those scuppers he has hanging 3ft below the hull. He's got enough water psi to supply a small village!

Now would be a good time to blueprint the bottom Ryan!

Thanks Dan. I know we talked about the paint but I'm going for it. If I don't like it, it can always be changed. And whats this about not posting pic of project? Just look at my post count,I'm all over it. Plus this is my first project:party-smiley-004:. I have enough water pressure and enough pressure dumps to lower the water pressure. So i'm good there.

Joe, if I blue print the bottom I wont have anything to do next year. I wouldn't mind just a fresh coat of gel on the bottom

As long as he put the Cigarette logo back on it will break up the blue and it won't look short.

Nows a good time with the motors and everything derigged. Straighten the bottom out, then a fresh layer of gel....boat will be better than new!

Wish I could be of help. My back is still jacked. Going on 3 weeks now. I couldnt do much other than stand around and point my finger and not get dirty. Hey, then I'd be taking Mr. Cigs job! Uhh, where are my Khaki pants and loafers...lol

sonic700 12-08-2014 06:46 PM

Mark,The logo is going back on.

Joe, the back thing is no good. Hope it gets better. Nabbers is going to be getting enough of my money. I'll need to have some left over to go boating. I was shocked Mark came ready to work. He was a big help.

Somebody had to run the Pettibone. It's like driving a truck, just sit back and relax and take in the scenery.

You know he went home that night moaning how sore he was. had Patti wash him up in the tub with a soft loofah, then made her gave him a massage and rubbed aloe on his sore hands before she tucked him in with his stuffed pet sheep and snuggy blanket.

She should've put some Vicks on his chest. That coughing is getting old. If he smoked it would be one thing but he doesnt

Did it sound like the cough you made when around your mom when you were 8 and didn't want to go to school? Lol

No cause its not the same color as the water.. water is blue

Go to :053.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSq0FtTOJzw From a distance all you see is the white and the blue blends in with the water making it look like a 30` boat till it gets closer.

I say you go for it Ryan but I`m just sayin.... Erica never believed me when I said it was (you know who) because she said "can`t be, that boat looks way shorter than ours". Optical illusion.

I would have to agree with Dan on the opitical effect on the boat . What you might consider is not painting the hull sides blue and just doing the transom to match the boot strip. My flat deck is white with the red boot strip and I painted the transom black because the old white transom got dirty fast . Carbon makes a mess and is a pain to clean. .I actually did it black gel with duratech 90 added to give the gloss .

sonic700 12-09-2014 09:15 AM

Dan his boat looked shorter because of the angle you were at from being behind him the entire time lol
