New Guy 95 Cafe
New guy to the site I just purchased a 95 Café Racer and might have a few questions from time to time for the Cig experts, I have quite a bit of experience with a number of boats and combinations but new to Cigarettes and their characteristics, The boat now has some made up 500hp looking engines but seems to run decent and Bravos, for now its just clean up and run it, come this winter Ill pull it down for a repower and XR's

Thanks All!! I would have got back sooner but I was boating all weekend... The boat needs a few things but I am not going to pull it apart during season It really needs some prop help but with the current power I will just leave it be for now. Seems to be a light 70's boat at my local lake 4900 feet.

You probably had seen it, it had some decal graphics in red that I did not care for the all white seems better to me than the decals. The boat was at GT's for a while it needs some help in the cockpit interior not torn up just old. I will pull engines and cockpit interior this winter for some clean up and changes. Seems the boat has basically sat since 99 with the old owner updating a lot of items but not really used, I was amazed I dint have to really do anything to get it back on the water other than I had to do a jet change they had 99's square I cant see how it even ran the way it did, I took it down to stock HP500 Jetting and runs great like that and the transom stays white. For what it is and what I paid I am extremely happy and ready to rip it apart come winter....

Well its winter and I will be pulling the boat apart soon ( January ) soon as I finish up a old Camaro in my shop, I am going to do some mild engine upgrades with some 177 Blowers don't cry they are heat pumps I was a dealer for years and for a mild upgrade they work fine, I rounded up a used pair rebuilt them and changed out the upper pulleys to 2.65 I will pull engines out for a good inspection of transom couplers engine internals etc, Its a 95 Café so I do not want to dump a pile of money into it but enough to make it shine again and it needs a 10mph gain, at 5 psi and no mufflers I think I will be there.
My plans are Pull engines heads inspect repair freshen as needed change camshafts if needed 177 blowers MSD ignitions, might install aluminum heads not sure yet. Some esthetic clean up remote oil filters wiring etc... Cockpit reupholster as original cabin is like new 100% perfect Gel coat needs attention... here is where I am confused.. Keep it White? Half 90 Red, or this... just not sure yet http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psbdfxizwb.jpg |
For the engines I have most of the stuff needed already MSD's Blowers timing covers, and I did get some nice billet remote filter mounts from Gellner he had left over from a project, I will be casting up some rear head mount MSD box mounts I have a small foundry and will post up some pics building patterns and casting for some winter reading, I still have plenty of engine bearings and gaskets from the store left over in all sizes so I should be good there also. I am going to keep the power at mild level I do not want to put 40K in drives on a 50K boat, this will be a budget clean up, Ill post pictures as I go.
Blowers cleaned up nice engine is a spare in shop blower just sitting on it while I make some items http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...pszdx4qjqt.jpg |
Great looking Cafe!
|
Very cool, look forward to the foundry write up!
|
White will always sell. 90mph red & white scheme is timeless.

Congratulations on a great buy.
Yes, those were some ugly graffics. I looked at that boat at GT but you beat me to it! I'm probably going to snag the Bullet he has there in a month or two. Would have rather had a Cafe though. You ever going to bring it back down here to do an ocean run? We do Dana Pt on Memorial Day, also SCOPE poker run in San Diego (hopefully again this year) in the fall. Should be a pretty nice boat when you're done with it! |
man i love the cabins to a 90's cafe. they are so practical and you can actually use them

After peeling them off I used chemicals and I have a 24hp steam cleaner took a whole Saturday to get the glue off.... |

We made 575 HP with 454's and Comp Cams cam upgrades.Really simple engines and pushed my Bullet to 80 MPH. I was happy with them to say the least. Good luck with the Café, looks like you have a nice piece to start with. Always loved the Café. |

I have been wanting this part for a while so I decided to take the time and pattern it for the Cig engines, Nothing special but I wanted a thick thermostat block off plate one if wanted would be thick enough to machine and tap the center to any size if needed. I started by making a simple wood pattern with draft then clear coted it and wet sanded to not have any grain when molding the housing looks good I will machine the mounting holes so they are recessed and use a stainless allen head that will be flush.
I had already made this pattern so no real process when I do the MSD Mounting bracket ill do some step by step pics Basic pattern this is a easy one http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psqx1ajwoy.jpg First test pattern and pour turned out good http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psy6vf9jy2.jpg Side by side http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps5givicl8.jpg Ill be using the npt fitting in intakes so just a block off plate might drill and tap center for H20 sensor http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psvcftibea.jpg Simple but will be a nice part http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psbpue5svz.jpg |
Started working on the MSD Bracket pattern, I want a 90* bracket that bolts to the back of the head placing the MSD in this basic location
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psj4dcivzc.png |
I pulled out my mock up engine made sure it was level to start with, I figure I should have this pattern done in a week and do a test pour this coming weekend if things dry fast enough.
First I laminated some thin finish plywood in a cross grain direction and stuck it in my press for a day for my material I will be using, then I cheated and used a head mount oil filter bracket for a start of my shape. http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psusg2omy9.jpg http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...pshqvaiezk.jpg http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...pspl6rqwea.jpg |
