36 widebody who knows it ? Thoughts?
http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...dy-o63893.html
Thoughts and comments please. More pictures would be great. |
I saw that and was thinking you would be interested due to your last post on the other 36'. Defiantly more pics would help.
|
Cool looking machine. Need more pictures. Details. Seems like a cool beast. Those 540's must be making some good power to run 75. My mistress ran almost 80 and that needed 675 hp, a high x and a narrower beam then this 36. Price seems decent if things check out. Like the paint
|
Steering on the left seems strange to me. Supposed to be sending me some more pictures. Motors used to have blowers, removed for reliability/simplicity.
Cig rocket you could buy it and sell me yours. |
Motors did not have blowers from what I recall - they were mechanical fuel injected with Blue Geranium pots, then converted to Holley carb on a Marine Merlin single plane intake. For most of the current owners time, the boat was open railway kept run on Lake Simcoe and then last I seen her, docked in Toronto on Lake Ontario.
She was well maintained widebody - 3 ribs down the deck but it does have a small dish in the deck, port Steering. White drop out bolster seating of the era with green piping and full rear bench last I seen of it. Being a Widebody - it takes cruiser wake like running over a Skateboard in a pickup! |

I taked to the seller; owner is said to have purchased the boat from Keith. Its up in the air if it was a former race boat. K-plane shadows on the transom indicate bigger tabs may have been used. As for the sticks on the left, could have been the original T-man spot in a 3 man setup..

A few more. Seller is emailing documentation, hin #, ect ect..
|
" remarkably good condition cosmetically" .. I wouldn`t describe the transom that way.
Widebodys are cool thou, wish mine had that nice walk around. |
I think the Girl Scout had twin ram tabs on her before....

I think the Girl Scout had twin ram tabs on her before....she ran over cruiser wake just like running over a skateboard in a pick- up

im in toronto let me know if you need anything

I dont know why I didnt pick up on this before but she had tripple ram tabs at some point when the first series of pics were taken; I also have to agree that the transom isnt the best I've seen.. I feel there has been some variations in the power/drive configuration.. No doubt that the boat is in good shape (couldnt venture a guess on moisture in transom) but I dont think its any sort of smokin deal..

A few more.

He sent me the same pictures I just thought it woul be in better shape for the money. It a bad price but I think 10k less is a deal
I really want to slowly restore/rebuild one but I want staggered |
I agree with you. I'm not a big fan of that cheep looking plastic everybody uses as dashes. Inho the boat would be a lot more attractive with a STB side helm and period correct/oem dash layout. Also like the 28, the 33, and the Mistress theres something a little disproportionate about the bolsters sticking up past the gunnels.
Its not as bad on this 36 or a Mistress because the boats length to seat protruding ratio isnt as radical as a smaller hull.. I guess as far as proportions go the flatdecks, early Guns and Cafes are just about perfect. |
Given the age of the boat it would be prudent to expect some moisture in the transom. I know it sat in water for at least one summer season in the Toronto Harbour and as is the case even the best silicone drys out. Still one of my favorite hulls. The only draw back between that and my flat deck is the wide body has a low freeboard .

Rick, do you have pics of your Flatdeck? I'd love to take a look..
|
R&B where in Toronto are you .do you currently have a boat ? I do but I am out of town right now and can't post pictures, that's my boat in my avitar ,check a thread called " How to put a notch in a flat deck" in this forum that is my boat. I will post pics on Friday .

Awesome Boat!
Based on the dash, big tabs, reverse scoops, etc. - It presents as a former race boat. Whether or not it was actually raced is another story but the helm layout looks like it could have been set up for a 3 man bolster. |
Kinda what I thought..

Someone needs to get ahold of Gil Lieber. This was his old pleasure boat. He raced a 36' back in the day called FreeSpirit. Staggard set up. |
Great pic! As the story goes on this one Keith Eikert use to own it; did Keith ever race or just build engines?
|
I don't believe Keith ever raced. I do know Keith and Gil are great friends and Keith (KS&W) built Gil's engines back in the day.
|
When Sal & Willy owned it...Awesome motors and MANY race boat in those days were racing these motors and winning lots of races.

If I bought it, it would go straight to Bruce Jones and get cut apart and rebuilt. I just think I will get into way more with this than I want.
How hard would it be to convert it to a staggered set up? If it needs a transom anyway would it be that much more work to make it staggered? Bruce would make an entire new cockpit with a liner and new dash pods I would think that to make it a staggered set up wouldn't be that much more....... Insert burning money emoji. |
Staggerd setup=better exit/entry in and out of the water; correct? Or just better weight distribution in general?

Yes to all. Props are deeper even with the same x dimension as side by side. Better in the rough, faster . But it takes up quite a bit more space and I'm not sure what would happen to center of gravity going from side by side to staggered.
The bottom line is I want to build one the way I want it but I don't want to spend the money it will take....Bruce is a good friend of mine but even with a friends and family discount it would be stupid money. |

I took one ride in 36 widebody that was fully staggered and have been hooked ever since. Not fast but we were running 60 in true 5-6 ft Lake Erie water and the only thing the boat needed was more power.

I am thinking of staggering my 38 flat deck. I am capable of doing all the work myself from fiberglass to rigging. The part that is holding me up is the cost despite the ability to do the work. To do it right you would need stand off boxes , exhaust , transmissions ( different for drive line )drive shafts fuel tanks cockpit interior hydraulics and wiring and that list is quick idea of the bigger items . I figure that list is at least 35 to 50 k . So even if you buy the boat for 25 k be ready to drop at least 50 to 100 k to stagger that deal and that is if you keep the old ssm3 drives for 5 drives add 25 k . You would be much farther ahead buying the the staggered 90 MPH turn key top gun that was listed for 115 k ( probably had for 95 to 100 k )
Don't get me wrong I love this hull and actually tried to buy it before my flat deck. If you buy this boat restore it and enjoy it in its current setup or be prepared to be way upside down in a very cool staggered wide body Just my two cents . RG. |
Heard back from Gil. This was his boat not Eickerts, although Keith did build the engines way back when. He recalls selling it in 88-89 to someone named Finngold or something like it. K.Eickerts brother owned a sister ship to this one that is on the west side of Cleve now. That's all
|
Bck that is what the add states that the current owner bought the boat from Gil .
Rick G. |
Yeah I saw that in the ad, but I believe the o.p. said the seller mentioned Eickert so I got some clarification.
|
Rick G...........this is off topic, but did you ever see a staggered Mag 27' sport?..........you have a blank canvas to work from...
|
Fwiw, the seller said the owner got the boat from Eikert.. Seems that is a little fictitious at this point..

Dan after putting the notch in my hull it will be awhile before I do upside down glass work again . Scippy I am restoring a 16 foot J Craft ski boat for my daughter this winter , I will start the Magnum in the fall provided I don't break the Cig Again .

Why not just buy this one. 1 of 5 ( Only 4 now because Fatboy is getting converted to side by side :lolhit:) from the factory with #5 drives, kevlar, pipes, brand new interior. Can be bought with or without MYCO. This is one BAD MOTHA&*%@# .All it needs, is power. PM me if interested.
