New Trailer again

1 Attachment(s)
The trailer under my Gun that I built, had its 9th birthday. So when the opportunity to sell it popped up, I let it go. Someone is going to get a nice trailer. Here is the metal for the new one strapped to the old one.

Sydwayz 08-28-2016 08:36 PM

What are you, bored? :D If so, do you want to come by and install my 14K 4-post lift in the garage?

Please take lots of pics. I find trailer construction, tips, tweaks, and unique ideas quite interesting.
Albeit, the closest thing I know how to do to welding is...
...soldering. :picard1:

I made the new one the same size as the old, but used one piece channel on the side rails that incorporated the drive guard

It's way to hot for this...
I was not bored, but a trailer was needed for a Lanier top gun, and mine got the call. I had two weeks to build it.

It rained for about 4 days straight, so that helped keep me on task. The winch stand is always steel, there is some of my soldering...

I ordered the same wheels as on the old trailer, used Goodyear wrangler ht tires on them, 8 total. Installed Air -tite hub seals on the 3 axles.

Sydwayz 08-28-2016 08:57 PM

Dexter axles? And did they come with, or did you swap to Timken bearings?

And if I was building from scratch, I'd likely put a power tongue jack on there.
I have one in the garage that's been there for 2 years. I have to get a saddle welded up for it.

Used a miller 252, with a 30A spool gun, 4043 wire. Al metal is 6061 T6. 16 rolls of wire in it. I made the fender mounts out of .125 plate, cut and welded to form them

Rockwell American axles, 0 degree, 6k, galvanized, used slip on Kodak disks, on all axles with a Brakerite pump. Some people pay to go to the gym, I turn the tongue jack.:)

I like the look of the 2" square tube on top, plus great for cover tie down

Beautiful work would and I like your short lead time!! Is it too late to stretch it 4 feet love to have an aluminum !

MN35LIGHTNING 08-28-2016 09:15 PM

Wow! Awesome craftsmanship and design. Wish I had your welding skills. Very well done.

SLOWRIDE-388 08-28-2016 09:18 PM

That's pretty, great work!

Thanks for the compliments, it was a lot of work, about 100 hours. I had the axles when this came to be. I was planning to replace the axles on the old trailer, otherwise there would have been a wait for the axle order.
The tongue pic is from when it was upside down. I had the cig bottom jig from the build 9 years ago.

Zero Patience 08-28-2016 09:47 PM

I used 3/8 plate for the bunk mounts, the stuff in the new EPA approved PT lumber, when mixed with salt water will dissolve aluminum. I did not use PT lumber for the bunks.

The last half of a gun is easy, the bow section is not, it is a compound curve. Takes a lot more time.

do you know what the ground clearance is using the 0 deg when fully loaded? i am buying dexter's & was told -22.5 deg for same ride height as leafs, but we think we can go to a -10 or even 0 deg & still have good clearance.

Looks great

A lot depends on how much the cross members are dropped, or V eed. To match the boat bottom. A Myco does not put much V in the crossmember, and they run a -10 degree axle. I put a little more V, and ran a 0 degree. Clearance is 16" with full fuel.. Again I just duplicated the last ciggie trailer from 9 years ago. This is the old trailer, notice the drive guard was added a few years after the trailer was built. I added it when I put the #6 drys on

I used southern yellow pine for the bunks, and tried out the plastic bunk wrap. Yes I know it may rot in 5 years, but it has no chemicals to eat the aluminum, and will dry much faster with out the carpet holding water for days. Just do not disconnect the winch from the bow before backing down the ramp I was told:|
Here it is out for the first time, I wanted the boat on it before building the tailgate.

Here is the Gun that never had a trailer, on its new (my old) ride. The bravos leave a little more room inside the drive guard than the 6 drives:)

Well the swap went well, the cig fit perfect, and the bunks are very easy to power up, use caution to avoid hitting to hard.

As you can see, the hinges, pins, latch mech. Are all home made stuff, I frenched in the tag to add envy for Lock & Load.
I used 400 tie wraps.....
Safety cone mount, and spare tire lock

Great job as always,:Score-101010:love the new "options" you added to this one... Lock n Load will have many including myself to accompany him in the circle of envy......

MonkeySea2 08-29-2016 08:48 AM

that's very nice! I'm currently selling my steel trailer to get an aluminum one. Less maintenance and less weight!

Well done! I love the frenched-in plate! The only thing I would do because I know I'd tear myself open on it, is radius the corners of the shelf to hold your drive guard tailgate up when you have it pinned open.

Nice.

Relaxing 08-29-2016 02:15 PM

What a beautiful trailer Jim. Is it going to LOTO for the Cig run next year? I want to see it in person. Might just have to talk about getting one.

BDiggity 08-29-2016 03:11 PM

Great looking trailer!

thisistank 08-29-2016 03:34 PM

Simply awesome.

Did the guy that bought your old trailer just buy that blue gun? It has 502's in it I think. Love the colors on that thing.

Yes it will be there, with a new truck pulling it. Thanks for the compliment.

Thanks, it's a one owner 96, always fresh water, that needs a new home. It was purchased to sell, and it's hard to sell one without a trailer. It will be in the classifieds very soon. Getting some clear repaired right now.

PROWRENCH 08-29-2016 04:59 PM

Beautiful work. I'm impressed!

scippy 08-30-2016 12:39 AM

What's the total material cost to build your trailer?....I know you have 100 hours labor, but curious as to just materials cost...........That's gotta be a 12K trailer if Myco sells it ...or more!!

From Myco it would be 18-20 k, I have 10,800$ in materials
Axles 1600
Tires wheels 2400
Brakes and pump 1300
Metal, 3500
Tool box 250
Coupler100
Jack and winch, 200
Brake lines, wiring, lights. 245
Bolts, nuts washers132
Bunks, bunk covers 250
Welding supplies, two argon, 15 spools 4043, 25 tips, $400
Lug nuts, 55
Airtight hub kits, $380

I like mycos, but they don't do the top rail, the wiring is adequate, the tailgate is mounted with tiny hinges. The toolboxes are side mounted and fill with water at some ramps, but most of all.. I can not afford one. They are great trailers, and a quality company that supports their customers. Go USA, made in America

offshoredrillin 08-30-2016 05:29 AM

Looks great, i have redone mine over the years and improved. I did steel fenders that are painted and undercoated. I mounted them with wellnuts and nylon washers to stop galvanic corrosion and so far so good.Im getting ready to do some uplighting now that its running again.
