Spider boat
Anyone know where the spider boat is? I know where the other 4 out of the 5 90mph boats are.
|
You buying it too?
|
I haven't seen it in 20 years or so, back when Bill Proctor owned it.
38ft Top Gun, where are its structural weakness's, if any? - Page 2 - Offshoreonly.com |
Spider boat was a sick boat. I thought Craig (Old School) had his eyes on it at one point, but you dont hear of that boat too often. It was one of the nicest Top Guns out there IMO.

Why would someone use that ratchet strap ?

Is that Bill Proctor you are referring to? I rode on it with him quite a few years ago, back when he had the dealership. But I don't know where the boat went if he sold it.

That looks super awesome!!!

I agree that's not the right way to tie down the transom of a boat. |

That paint job hurts the eyes.

I just can't get over a 30 year old boat is going for MORE than a ten year old boat was going for 5 years ago! CRAZY times! And I do agree, the paint is definitely subject to opinion. |

Again, the market is just crazy. |
Randy at Cobra is selling it .. that`s big red flag .
|
The owner of this boat had a 46 Rough Rider with 1200 Cobras. I also owned a 42X with 1200 Cobras. Randy stands behind his product and I don’t know anybody who he has ever just outright screwed. Does he have more used high performance parts than anybody in the country, and might they work there way into one of his engine builds, sure, but he always makes things right and stands behind his stuff.
|
Who painted the boat ? the arester looks like the throat of the carb, crazy cool

The owner of the boat was Bill Proctor, who had all the custom work done. He owned Offshore-Performance in Grasonville MD, at the time; which rotated it's way through being a Cigarette dealer, Sonic dealer, Donzi dealer, and a few other brands, all back in the early 2000s. 302Sport is right, he did have the 46, as well Bill commissioned the one-of-a-kind center-steer lift-dash 45' Cigarette Maximus back in the day too. All three of these mentioned were his personal boats. He also ordered/built the 46' Stealth, and a few other unique Cigarettes; as well as the white/yellow 2004 Donzi ZRC with custom Cobra 750s and XRs, staggered, and even a Donzi ZSC with blue power. Offshore-Performance did all the custom rigging, specifically John Smith and Jay Meyer, both of which are still mechanics at other marine businesses now.
I don't know who painted the boat, but that person did paint a bunch of wild custom boats for Bill and his customers in the day. The "Spider Boat" was one of his most prized possessions. He didn't even keep it on a lift, as he had a private launch ramp in his backyard, and garaged it after every outing. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries...ry?id=10743276 Harry Judge also was a part of the dealership; who had the Tony the Tiger 42' straight-bottom Cigarette for his personal boat. Frank Marchone also was a part of the dealership who sold probably 75% of the Sonics ever built by Jay Ross, as well as when Richard Hewitt briefly owned Sonic in the mid-2000s. Sadly, Bill Proctor, Harry Judge, and Frank Marchone have all passed on. But they were all prominent members of the old school powerboaters of the Mid-Atlantic from the 80s through the 20-teens. I knew them all well. It was Frank that sold me my first Sonic 26' Prowler and got me into this whole sport. |

The hardware from these guys was just amazing. I remember staring at the massive power these boats had and someone mentioned........"yea and he has a spare set in his garage". It was different time |
Pretty sure Barry Gibson, Pro Art Works of Maryland painted the Spider Cigarette for Bill Proctor. I believe he did all of the custom paint jobs for him. Details are unbelievable.

Forget the new owners name but he posts it on his Facebook frequently, brings it to poker runs, and refers to it now as “the goat”, and is a great guy. The boat was sitting in bills side garage at his house for years until the house was sold and was then stored in the old offshore performance show room. Looks just the same and bad ass as ever! I’m sure he’d be happy and proud to know it’s still making enthusiasts smile.
great post! Your gramps was highly regarded in the offshore / sport boat community. and yes, the new owner appears to be taking great care of the boat and having a lot of fun with it! Great to see. |

Bill had two daughters, Kim and Debbie right? I still keep in touch with Debbie on occasion; and you must be Kim's son. Chuck Hunnicutt owns the boat now, and has it down in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia (mouth of the Chesapeake Bay). |

Yup right on the money, I’m Kim’s son! Always wish I wasn’t so young when he was in his full swing in the performance boat world because I’ve mostly only heard stories but I loved the spider boat top gun even when I was only a little kid definitely had me interested from the beginning!
This was the 26' Sonic I bought from Bill and 'Uncle Frank' Marchone; the day I picked it up, right there at the original Offshore Performance building. This is a core boating memory for me from early 2000 or 2001, as my Dad happened to be in town when I took delivery. I was still wet behind the ears, literally, as this was my first boat; as I was just graduating from racing PWCs. https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...Sw&oe=6974A2A5 |
Take a look at these threads too, as Bill was the original owner of the one-of-a-kind center-steer 45' Cigarette Maximus too.

Yup! We have a picture of it mounted in our garage to this day, I believe it may be an excerpt from an old magazine with a brief article. Still largely an exclusive boat to this day as far as I’m concerned. My uncle owned one that he bought from offshore back when it was first commissioned. I was a little kid at the time but I remember when he brought it to our house and docked it on our pier and it was immaculate! Again so cool to me that people are familiar with stuff like the Maximus.
both those cigarettes he owed were exclusive. The spider boat is one of 5 ever built as is the 45 cigarette except it’s the only center steer ever built and the only one with a cabin. Your grand dad had great taste and apparently liked to go fast!! |

That 45 Maximus was there for sale for quite a long time..... I recall getting in that boat many times to check it out, and it was such a cool boat! I believe it had Merc 900's at that time?. Thats a boat that once you see it up close, you dont ever forget it.....actually, the bottom picture was taken in the driveway at Ocean Performance.
That's why the Maximus has that odd hump over the rearmost engine, as it needed clearance for those two big air cleaners. |
I bought the boat from your mother. She is such a kind thoughtful person and wanted me to have the boat. I regret selling it everyday but due to health issues and financial ones I had to. I knew Doug and Chuck could and would use the boat how it should be. The spider boat was my unicorn and I'm beyond happy that I had the opportunity to own it, polish it and run it. I didn't sell it to make money or anything along those lines. Im glad its out there being seen and appreciated like I know Bill would want.
