Well, I NEVER thought it would escalate to this, but we are NOTCHED!

after going and back and forth on the idea, I figured that IF there was going to be a time, this would be it. So after taking measurements from the Apache next it, we have a notched transom. The new center stringer was almost perfectly made for it.

Got ballzzzz?
bigger than mines!

ICDEDPPL 01-21-2025 09:38 PM

Wow, okay then ! lol

Craney 01-22-2025 03:50 AM

What are the benefits of adding a notch ?

kreed 01-22-2025 05:52 AM

Good for you !! Not too many would go this far !.... but I will say, my 1992 Bullet with the notch was noticeably faster than my current 1988 Bullet with no notch, with similar power. That "cleaner" water apparently makes a diff. Adding a pair of blowers to the 88' took care of that difference, but the notch works!

You get a longer lever for the propeller to lift the bow.

Pushing the end of the bottom of the boat forward puts the propellers in "less disturbed"(water with air bubbles) water and cuts down on prop slip.

Shah Mat 01-22-2025 06:21 AM

Wow, you have the gas pedal on the floor on this project. Love it.

Kreed,
Generally speaking, is there any loss on ride quality in rough water with a notch? Do you notice any other differences? Just curious.

Helmwurst 01-22-2025 08:46 AM

I would assume the ride quality would be fine, it still has a 24 degree bottom. Right?

thisistank 01-22-2025 10:42 AM

Our Cafe Racer had no notch, our two Top Guns had notches. I'll take the notch all day. Ride quality is better I found - less porpoise, more efficient with notch. Of course the Cafe was a bravo boat and the guns were both SSM boats so CJ was different too.

This is a similar effect you get with extension boxes??

Markus 01-22-2025 03:24 PM

Yes

boat looks great by the way. Cover is bad Azz!!

hey I just shot you a PM for some drive height info.

Rick G 01-30-2025 09:22 AM

Hi Nick nice work . I put a notch in my 1985 Kevlar flat deck when put on the ssm no 5 drives on . How big is your notch. I reached out to Phil Lip**** and he advised me to go with a 10 inch notch as opposed to what ever the standard Cig notch was. The boat handles great and jumps up on plane with the 5 drives . If you are going with sixes I imagine the improvements will be even better. Keep up the great work. Rick G .

Thanks Rick! Your thread inspired me a lot about adding the notch. I think you and I may be the only ones who have done it. I mimicked the 41 Apache so I believe the notch was 11” give or take.

Nickg3130 01-30-2025 09:02 PM

Well, can’t believe how well this crew did in about a months time. Hatch done in primer, transom with notch done in primer, bilge prepped and painted. Off to get some holes drilled for drives!

ICDEDPPL 02-14-2025 11:01 PM

Holy **** and I thought I worked fast !!
Love the 6`s and so will you !
Amazing progress.
Keep it up !

Building some 540s w/ aluminum heads, putting my blowers on them. Probably going to be around 800-850 if I were to guess. Not looking to make crazy power just yet. Over next down season I’d like to build a nice set of EFI motors. But we’ll see.

Also forgot to mention after cutting the holes for the drives we thought it would be stupid not to blueprint the last 5-6ft of the bottom. And good thing we did bc it had a pretty bad “hook”. Don’t have a ton of pictures of that but here she is blocked up.

Farmer Jon did it first but I also put in a gradual "hook" in the last foot of the boat and it helped quite a bit with hop.
There`s a whole thred about somewhere on here

I’m sure that helps with straight bottom but now that I have about an 11” notch it may act differently.

What are the tubes for? Some sort of cooling feature or something? Seen a few boats with these.

Sam,

Prop ventilation during planing. Allows them to slip some to get engine RPMs up. I asked the same question a couple years ago.

Thanks. Brad.
