38 Flatdeck “over compensated” any info?
Hey guys, so I put a small deposit on a 1984 38 Flatdeck named “over compensated”. Was wondering if anyone had some insight on the history of this boat. Apparently the boat was from Texas at one point and went up to Ohio. The gentleman who restored the boat passed years ago and sat after the restoration. Seems to have put a ton of time and money into paint and up dates. Motors are un known but run. Have 871 blowers and super chillers. Believe the drives are #2s or 3s with sportmaster lowers, borg transmissions. It’s a dream boat of mine for what I think is a fair price. Apparently Kevlar hull too. Haven’t seen it in person yet but pictures/videos make the boat look amazing for its age. Will post some now

Congrats! Thing seems very nice.
|
Congrats!!
Flatdecks just always look like they means business! |
Cool boat!
I saw some of your posts on FB and didn't want to comment and seem negative but hopefully someone on here has some good info. I would definitely recommend asking OSO more questions before you buy it though. |
Congrats, looks nice!!
|
wow !
outstanding for an older boat ! That's my style of boat ! my sight unseen guess would be... tough call but... 30k-50k ? depending how power train inspection / health... |
I know of 3 projects scarab 38 for sale
and keep talking myself out of them... tough duty i have to admit ! |
Thanks guys. Was debating taking it without power for low 30s but I think if the power checks out I should be ahead of the game. I just wondered what the history of the hull was or if there was any info on the resto.
|
30k was a guess assuming there's is a recent survey stating no transom or stringers rot! Otherwise that is a whole different story...
|
I'm pretty sure i saw a video of that one on FB with the motors running. It sounded good

Video
I thought I had the video from the guy who bought it from the OTHER on market place but I can’t seem to find. Engines were running and sound nice. I almost drug it home for some reason myself

Curious what OSO thinks engines make for power?
Will the drives reliably handle it? Top speed? |
I had a brief moment I wanted to go up and buy it just to have a running boat but decided the divorce was probably going to cost too much. That boat was located next to the shop that mine has been in forever.
|
Well it’s official. Brought her home today from
michigan to NJ. Can’t wait to start upgrading this thing over the winter https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2fcc06bab.jpeg |

nooo I want to try and keep both. I dumped way too much coin into the Pantera. Going to try and modernize the flat deck a little more mechanically like the Pantera is down the road. |
are those ssm 3's

Congrats. Looks like a great boat. Don't bother with 5's. Get yourself a nice set of 3A's for better reliability and she will be a wave crusher for years to come. The effort to convert to 5's is not that rewarding for gains in speed for such a heavy boat.
|
Very hard to get parts for 3s and 5s ... best thing I ever did was go sixes. You can find deals on wet sump.
|
I thought that SSM#2's and TRS drives both had the same transom assembly or at least the same bolt pattern? If so, then maybe you can find a pair of Konrad 540's or whatever Konrad makes these days..... is Konrad still in business??
|
If you go 3’s or 3A’s or 5’s your going to need the correct transom assemblies. Those drive will not mount to the trs transom assembly.
|
Congrats Nick!

the TRS assembly and upper TRS drive were the same as SSM 2 the only difference would be the SSM2 lower fits on the TRS upper So anything else like cig28 mention will need some new parts! |

SSM’s being easiest but hardest to get parts for. Wet sump #6s being the best but most expensive Bravos only benefit is probably being cheapest down the road. Really just depends on what becomes available or easily accessible for me at this point. Probably leaning towards SSM’s |

Yea, that's it. lol Do you do any of the Spartan Powerboat Club runs in the Barnegat?
|
They still have to pump your fuel in NJ? if so, bet they hate when you pull up lol
|
With a boat, motorcycles or diesel truck you can pump your own.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...3557b97ca.jpeg boat looks great by the way. Cover is bad Azz!! Ugh I’m drooling. I love a clean transom set up too also another reason I’m leaning towards them. For it's age, the boat is really really nice. It has a few blems here and there that id love to have gone through but the custom paint definitely makes it hard. Another downfall to the sixes is all the transom work that’ll need to be done. But most guys I’m seeing with a solid color transom does keep the boat nice and clean looking. Since I’m doing most of the work myself I’ll probably end up just painting the transom all black to keep it simple. |
I think a black transom would actually look nice. I get why they did it in green it flows with the graphics but black will also flow from the engine cover down the back.
