Any one remember this Cigarette #777 ROCK A BYE, two of the pic's look to taken at a later date 1975 ? The rear hatch shot looks earlier maybe 1973 ? The pictures must have been taken at a Lake Erie race.

Looks like the old Steve Babbin boat, I think was triple B, I remember racing against him in Key West one year, maybe 1973 or 4 really not sure on date, all I can remember is he took off and left us all in his wake, Not sure if Big Dirty was with him or not, I know one thing nobody was going to catch him on that day, but the otherside was everyone also knew that running that hard he was not going to go very far, and sure enough he went up in smoke. Anyway the colors and number for the boat are correct to be the triple B boat. Marco may be able to help out on this one as well. 7XCHAMP

Small mystery on Rock A Bye and Triple B. Almost surely it deals with the same boat.
Very probably the original version is as Rock A Bye #777 in 1973 for Steve Babin. Then in the same year the boat become Triple B II #555.
Babin raced in 1973 and 1974 alternating himself among the class II and I.

Mike I think your visit to Kevin M helped fire him up in letting me post the family's historic pictures, THANK'S KEVIN & Jack M.
Mike here are some more pic's of the Bertram with it's raised deck that your Dad had.

I know the boat I was there, if you look at the strakes curving up in the front you will see the Bertram lines. Not to be confused with the later 38` Bertrams, totally different beast. I think Gil Lieber had something to do with the project and the actual owner was Sonny ????????? don`t remember last name, but Gil Lieber was close friends with Carl K. and used to visit frequently, I think they got the boat for next to nothing, it was built by Mabry Edwards in St. Augustine. 7XCHAMP

#666 - was a Memco - sister to my boat only shorter - mine was a test boat - 36 - where they moved the strakes -

in those days- didnt have enough money to tow it far - that blue wrecker towed it to Cape Cod - where I almost sank it - but still finished with water up to my ankles and the starter motors under water - it was a ONE WAY trip around Cape Cod - and there were not any places to stop - no marinas out there when you round the hook !

Those were the days !

If you have a lot of those old pictures and would like the public to see them.....we can give you your own section on HORBA to post them and put an explanation with them.

I think everyone here knows what HORBA is, but just in case

www.historicraceboats.com

We are trying to keep the history of the sport alive...that is exactly what you have here ..photos of boats only a few of still remember.

Excellent question.....We have over 30,000 images of the sport from the earliest days .....every time we speak to a publisher about doing a book, they all want a big number guaranteed production run...that means Big $$$ up front.

We have been talking about putting together a DVD with stillphotos of the sport by year or by boat brand....say follow Aronow's racing stable as he progressed from the early wooden Claudia to .....The Cigarette.

Would anyone out there be interested enough in buying these kind of DVDs? Phil Lewis used to do a memory tape of stills each year with 100 photos taken from the previous season set to music....he did a very nice job and they were great...maybe something along those lines.

Slingshot Cig Peter Dean

Hi Lads,

I was on the gold coast in Australia on the weekend and I went to the Gold Coast Marina. I guess it is our version of how Thunderboat row would have been like...Maritimo had about 3 offshore race boats and trucks in its factory driveways.

I was driving around looking inside the factories from the street and looking at the boats, when I couldn't believe my eyes.

I looked into a factory and found an old cigarette being restored, but not into a race boat but more of a cruiser.

Instantly I drove up, jumped out and asked the guy working there "is that an old cigarette?". He said "yep, its an old race boat, its name was slingshot, its a 40foot". He then told me that the guy who owned its sons are restoring it. I then told the guy how much race history this boat had!.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this boat, it was Australian champion for years, it was a 36ft cig extended into a 40ft by Peter Dean. There is a lot of info and a few pics in John Crouse's Searace book.

I've taken shots on my cell phone and i'll down load them and post them shortly.

24degrees 12-13-2007 09:41 PM

A cruiser??????

priceb 12-13-2007 10:40 PM

sorry, not a cruiser, but a glass squared off windsreen (like the 80's, some new 454's, the interior done like a a family boat, not a normal cig or a race boat...ie an anchor on the front of the bow etc. The boat is unrecognisable from its former history.

I'll post pics shortly.

In speaking with Roger Mumm yesterday,he said he has a list of 40 plus mags the he purchased and resold or worked on.He will put the list together and maybe the HOBA will be able to us it...I assume he also has a treasure chest of photos. Bud

The 1973 Lake Erie Kirby Classic it was the first major offshore race on the Great Lakes. The Mentor Yacht Club hoisted the event. Not only were the lakes at record high water levels, but the seas ran high, 5' to 7' and many boats did not finish the race. Impossible Dream a 40' Gara won ,with Aeromarine III taking second, followed by Aeromarine II in third.

Black Tornado 12-20-2007 07:46 AM

Always fascinating these photos from the short story of the Offshore on Lake Ontario!

The 1973 Kirby Classic and Lake Erie proved to much for many of the race teams. Veteran local racer Sandy Satullo sank when testing his new wooden 40' Gara COPPER KETTLE the day before the race. Also at the start of the race Wally Harper spun his 27' Magnum Lil SMIDGEN do to a broken drive. Wally and his codriver Jack Mathes Jr were thrown into the water. Sandy Satullo would have to use his old Cigarette to run the race.

Black Tornado 12-21-2007 03:37 PM

Interesting! A never seen version of that Gara 40' Copper Kettle.
Look in the second pic the typical and nice pants of Satullo.
The two photos that you have put they are of the new Gara 40' only. Any image of the "old" Copper Kettle 36'?

I agree.......It doesn't get any better than that!!

HabanaJoe 12-23-2007 05:03 PM

I want to ask a question or two.

Are all the 36's widebodies, even the pleasure versions?

I remember many of these boats (throughout the whole thread) at Point Pleasant and they used to bring some of them down to Zuback's in Morgan, NJ to use as a place to work. Zuback's was the old Henry Luhrs plant.

No, real reason just want to know.

Also, does anyone remember a Cigarette from Mauro Motors (Tommy Mauro) in Woodbridge, NJ? It was an triple outboard race boat. The story was Don used to buy cars from Tommy's father, hence a relationship and built him the boat? I don't know what size it was, it was lime green & orange?

This 30 ft Ghost was built for Rocky A for the 1972 Miami Nassau Race, which was Rocky's first Offshore adventure. The actual boat was at the 1971 Miami Boat Show and one prime visitor was Muhammed Ali who said he would buy one if he won the Frazier fight in Miami at that time. He won but failed to place an order ! The boat was piloted by Barry Cohen and mechanic duties by Jack Schliech of Travelers Marine in Freeport NY. We stuck Rocky in between us and rocketed to a first place overall in Sports and 3rd overall in the Open Class. Red Crise was very surprised!! The boat is patterned after Ghost Rider 1966 Undefeated World Champion.
Ghost/S is 30loa, 8ft beam, twin 500hp 486 Mercruisers,400 gal capacity, Hydraulic trims.Now get this one spec......wgt 6500lbs.
We really ran offshore in those days..........

Happy Christmas to all you sports fans...........
