That waving Stars and Stripes really behind the race number had to give suspicion!
To think that it seems that that boat had to mark the return to the competitions of Don, but then this last has desisted and he has surrendered her to Norris.
However before that Don in couple with Jim Wynne in that boat (all in white colour at time but just with the #2) won a club race in 1971 or 1972...

After we bought the rear hatch from the SPIRIT many thought it was the same Mag. I later sold it to a friend who raced it as CHEMICAL Re ACTION, were she is today ???????

Also at the start of the race Wally Harper spun his 27' Magnum Lil SMIDGEN do to a broken drive. Wally and his codriver Jack Mathes Jr were thrown into the water. Sandy Satullo would have to use his old Cigarette to run the race.

h2oboater,about the the Lil Smidgen you are sure that pic was shooted in 1973? It appear the Aeromarine II with the #666 of 1974. In 1973 the Aeromarine II was with the #5.

BT you are right, this pic of the #666 is from a later date. I found this new's paper story that must go with that picture. The #666 won the race, Li'L SMIDGEN won Production class and was 4th overall.

Many of the pictures do not have dates on them, sorry about the confusion. This pic must be from the same race.

There was one air intake in the centre of the deck just forward of the windscreen like you can see on the Elswick's Thunder at Cowes in 1978.
Another 36' with air intakes (two on the sides of the deck just forward the windscreen)) were the two Gentry's American Eagle in 1973/74.

B T, need help identifying this hull, I was told it was made in Italy in the 70's. Some how it turned up here in this Michigan boat yard. With it's twin shaft drives and large steps, you, or someone should know this boat ???????

Ahead Of Its Time If It Was A 70's Hull

BROWNIE 02-04-2008 07:22 AM

It is an Offshorer, built by Monte Carlo Marine, in San Remo, Italy. It was designed by Bob Hobbs, and originally built by Cal Connell. It has the engines installed front and back, with a wing gearbox between them to mount the transmissions.

Brownie, You never cease to amaze me. I talked to the owner about 15yrs ago, and indeed he did say it was from Italy and I think is was made in 1973. A lot of the running gear was still in her, the gearbox was chain driven off of the engine's flywheels.
It did have an unusal trim tab set up, Only one tab about the size of a swim fin mounted right in the center of the transom just above the keel. Defineatly a radical bottom design for the year.
Who owned or raced her? does it have any history?

JO - PANTERABOATS 02-04-2008 10:52 AM

Brownie,
He had that boat in his shop in Hialeahs West 84 st about 1976, Cal told me that it was the way for the future!
How right he was!
Later,
Pepe @ Pantera.

h2oboater,Brownie has correctly replied to you.
Exactly it deals with a Riva Monte-Carlo Offshorer built in the seventies in the yards Mare e Sole near Ventimiglia to few kilometers from Sanremo toward the Italian-French border.
The yards I believe they were of ownership of Gianfranco Rossi famous T-Man of Renato Della Valle.

h2oboater 02-05-2008 09:50 AM

Thank's B T and Brownie, the steps look as good as any boat built today 30+ years later !!!!!!!!!

nocigarette 02-06-2008 04:14 PM

The ad says the boat's in Los Alamitos. That's about 5 miles from me. I emailed the seller to have a look at her. The photos don't look like Los Al though. The mountains are too close!

From a good friend of mine who knows the boat and trailer very well... the trailer has been striped of hydraulics and would have to be replaced to put it in a legal traveling mode. Also he indicated use two very large engines verses the 4 that were in it originally, and who ever buys it will need deep pockets.
