Unique cat owned by the marina owner. Someone said it was a Maelstrom. It had a flawless woodgrain finish on the deck. As well as plenty of hp.:D

Brownie, were you involved with Cary on the 49 / 50'? Remember in my wasted youth (mid-70's) seeing one with a tall walk-thru windshield with fold-back pieces and a huge stainless & teak helm wheel. Were many made like this....haven't seen one quite like since?

The year 1975 Offshore Racing on Lake St Clair was becoming very popular, boat's like Lil Rhino, Wolverine, & L'IL SMIDGEN were the boat's to beat ! I thought I could run with the big boy's with my 24' Cheetah 454 jet boat in modified class M-77. What was I thinking !! But the cool thing was I got to race against the Great's Like Wally Harper, Pete Smith,& many more and that's PRICELESS .

Here is another classic, Sam Altese's 24' Nova Come Again, he would later race this Magnum P-83 Come Again, and when I thought it was time I bought it from him, this time I had a real boat to race.

Mike / George?....the all-white OPA is Billy G's, also from Detroit area. He has owned it since day one. Your old 28 is back on post 54 / page 3. Still a regular fixture here on St. Clair.

PatriYacht 02-25-2007 12:42 PM

Correct. He's in Lake Orion. Has a bar called Opa and another one I can't think of the name with a Pantera hanging from the ceiling. We had a OSO party there last year about this time. About time for another one.:D :evilb: :D

Two early Outboard race boats that ran in Detroit in the 70's. BZ-II a 30' Maritime Hull with 3 Chrysler 150 racing engines, If race's were won on sound this outboard would win every time. The other boat was just known as FREDDY P-172 a 24' Super boat hull. Fred Hartman surprised many in P class with the speed of this boat.

Dude! Sweet! 02-27-2007 12:13 PM

H20boater (or anyone else that might know), I read in Searace that Davey Wilson drove "a 38' Italian aluminum deep V" to third place in the 1983 Detroit Race(Detroit River & Lake St. Clair). It doesn't say what marque the boat was, but indicates the name/sponsor was "Ittios, Inc." I'm curious about what make the boat was and if there are any photos or if anyone knows aything about it.

Maybe that boat was the CUV Bandit/Caliente or another boat that was left here after one of the world championships in Florida? I thought that there was some indication that there could have been another CUV left in the US and there was also some comment that Billy Martin throttled or dove one at some point.

I'd also heard that Brownie knew something about the CUVs that ran here in the US. Is that true?

Any info or photos would be appreciated.

Dude! Sweet! 02-27-2007 01:40 PM

CUV as suspected! Thanks! Yah any more photos or info would be greatly appreciated. I does look a lot like Bandit/Caliente.

Black Tornado 02-28-2007 02:36 AM

Like we can see It's the next Caliente of Antonelli.
I think it was a 38' builded for an american driver in those years(1982-83) or maybe it's the former Ali Reza of the weapons merchant Francesco Pazienza alias Frank Donato that had a all white 38' in 1982. The little lateral air scopes in the engines hatches seems the same of that boat. No other CUV 38' had those air scopes.
That American CUV have a windshield modified on the sides too. Was modified in USA or born in that shape?

Black Tornado 02-28-2007 11:28 AM

Many thanks h2oboater,
To think that in those years I and a friend of mine we saw actual that page of addvertising and we recognized that that spike of sponson that breaks from the bow of the Scarab of Betty Cook should belong to the Wolverine. :D

The 30 Velocity / Putt Putt reminded me of B-Fast, which ran out of the great lakes mid to late 90's. Ralph & Tom usually managed to keep this fast, but unpredictable beast in a straight line. But every once in while, she'd show her mean streak by spitting out one or more of the crew. Louie "the buoy" was navigator & chief rag waver at the turns & S / F. He also held the distinction of getting tossed with alarming regularity. Key West ~'95....they're in a huge pack of B boats coming into the first outside turn in typical KW nastiness. As the spray settles and the scrum is sorted out, the turn buoy is destroyed and Louie has once again gone swimming. Although ok, bad news is the slower B boats and an even larger fleet of A boats are now turning on the only orange thing in the water...Louie's head! And the Detroit legend of "Louie the Buoy" was born.

As the Velocity boys say....pads, steps, beaks, bustles, bull!

I found out that when last raced as A J Mr Robert's on lake Michigan they busted the bottom out, and may be sitting in a field somewhere.
