Slingshot Cig Peter Dean
Hi Lads,
I was on the gold coast in Australia on the weekend and I went to the Gold Coast Marina. I guess it is our version of how Thunderboat row would have been like...Maritimo had about 3 offshore race boats and trucks in its factory driveways. I was driving around looking inside the factories from the street and looking at the boats, when I couldn't believe my eyes. I looked into a factory and found an old cigarette being restored, but not into a race boat but more of a cruiser. Instantly I drove up, jumped out and asked the guy working there "is that an old cigarette?". He said "yep, its an old race boat, its name was slingshot, its a 40foot". He then told me that the guy who owned its sons are restoring it. I then told the guy how much race history this boat had!. For those of you who aren't familiar with this boat, it was Australian champion for years, it was a 36ft cig extended into a 40ft by Peter Dean. There is a lot of info and a few pics in John Crouse's Searace book. I've taken shots on my cell phone and i'll down load them and post them shortly. |
A cruiser??????

sorry, not a cruiser, but a glass squared off windsreen (like the 80's, some new 454's, the interior done like a a family boat, not a normal cig or a race boat...ie an anchor on the front of the bow etc. The boat is unrecognisable from its former history.
I'll post pics shortly. |

Small mystery on Rock A Bye and Triple B. Almost surely it deals with the same boat.
Very probably the original version is as Rock A Bye #777 in 1973 for Steve Babin. Then in the same year the boat become Triple B II #555. Babin raced in 1973 and 1974 alternating himself among the class II and I. |
what ever happened to Steve Sabin

In speaking with Roger Mumm yesterday,he said he has a list of 40 plus mags the he purchased and resold or worked on.He will put the list together and maybe the HOBA will be able to us it...I assume he also has a treasure chest of photos. Bud

Charlie, how about an update on the boats shown in the Horba "Restorations in Progress" section?

Please keep those old photo's coming - it blows my mind to see 'new' photo's of such historic machinery.
