Vintage.. Just Spoke to dad, He says He had purchased a 28' Magnum from a gentelman by the name of Dexter Coffin at Lake X in Florida. It had twin small blocks at the time. He had raced it 1 Time, and then Sold it to Frank Lack around 1970. Frank Lack did name that boat "White Knight". Then Frank had Purchased a Cigarette which he also Called "White Knight". And to answer your question, Dad is almost positive that -Yes you do have his Old Boat, see if it is rigged or was rigged with (2) small blocks at one time.

Regards,
Jr.

Thank you Billy Jr. could you check to see if their are any pictures around?

Yes working on the transom it's still had the cutouts for twins.... I've covered them now for a single tall deck 427.

But for this I think it's better open another thread.

BT,,After the Active cat Benihana broke in the 1982 Kiekhaefer/St Augustine Classic Red Crain bought the Active cat and had it repaired by Active. With it's new name Chrysler Laser, Red and Bob Kaiser race it with Chrysler Hemi power. Red would later race this cat under many names, Daddy Cool, Duty Free maybe more ? Red said he sold it to a movie company, were it was blown up for a TV movie.
The Wolverine cat became Bud Light, then A J Roberts were in a race it broke up in Lake Michigan , last seen in a field beyond repair, gutted.

What a shame so many of those boats broke apart - they always looked great.

The early Active cats were the first of the big cats to be made fiberglass & Kevlar. The 37' and 33' Active cats had a great Cougar design with it's wide tunnel pushed the way they were made to the max. But if they held together they would usually outrun other big cats of the day. Alot has been learned since then, I'm sure todays Skater and MTI cats have a technology advantage that wasn't there in 1982.

Black Tornado 04-27-2007 10:56 AM

Many Thanks h2oboater! You are very informed about the Active too.
Can you make an Active story opening a new special thread?

8 Meter Chris Craft

3 Attachment(s)
How many remember this Chris Craft, they came out around 1975. A white and red 8 Meter called CC Rider raced in P class back then in the Great Lakes. But their was another one called the Maverick raced by Steve Baum in the sport class back then. It was a White hull with smallblock Mecruiser Tempest engines and the new Trs drives, and it was Fast. But sadly the Maverick rolled over in a turn and killed Walt Burns at the 1975 Blue Lagoon Classic on Lake St Clair. Steve retired the hull, but later used it's basic design to build the Maverick boat's he and Lew Cooper [Miss Gallo] raced.

The actual date was June 4 1978, it happened on Toms River in NJ. Jim Talbott was my father, I was 7 when he was killed. If anyone has any pictures or stories of Jim Talbott I would love to hear them. Most of the stuff that I had was destroyed in a flood when I was a teenager. I used to have a 1st annual Burns/Talbott memorial race book but that was lost as well.

Seeing as I haven't posted on here yet, I had enough trouble putting up some photos I took in Key West in 1984. So if I can't get these to show up check out my Photo album. Some great Old School shots.

Dave, Like I told you, your dad described the word "COOL" in my book. He was all that!
Later,
Pepe @ Pantera.

Fast Shafts 06-01-2007 11:12 AM

Dave,
I'm computer illiterate and don't have a scanner-can you post a snail mail address? Give me a couple of days to dig the pics up.
Bob

dtalbott 06-01-2007 11:29 AM

Bob,

Could you email me at the dtalbott at gmail.com address. I will reply with my address. I don't like to post my home address in public forums due to spammers and such trolling the internet collecting info.

Dave in 1994 I was Honored to receive the L.S.C.O.R.A. Burns Talbot Award. This was a great way to Honor your Dad and Walt Burns, two men who we owe many of the Safety Rules we now race by today.

dtalbott 06-04-2007 01:33 PM

Too Funny

They have Talbott spelled wrong, kinda funny really.

dtalbott 06-04-2007 01:40 PM

Video

Interview with Jim Talbott and Mark Mathes (of Emerald City Harbor - At least I think that is who it is...I have never met him as a adult) sometime in late 77 or 78. The quality is bad but then again the video gear of that era was not so hot. It's the only video I have of my father.

Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mRzWX_UlHY

Part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPr5uj5qH2Q

I have some footage of the actual Race and another interview. I will post soon.

Do they still give out the Burns Talbott award?

These pics were displayed at the LSCORA finale....Mark M's sister-in-law Sherry put them together for us. I will give Mark a copy to give to you when you get together. That curly haired guy to your dad's right is Dave Rutkowski....still a regular around here at the Harbor.

dtalbott 06-05-2007 07:57 AM

I have been talking with Dave Rutkowski via email and Phone. I can't tell everyone how cool this is to finally start to get info on my dad. For 29 years I was in a bubble, then my wife caught wind of this forum and BAM! In 5 days I am starting to uncover more than I ever thought I would. Thanks to everyone!

Dave

Dave, I am glad to have helped! Say hello to Dave R.
Later,
pepe @ pantera.

Fast Shafts 06-05-2007 10:27 AM

Dave,
I found a few pictures of your dad's boat. My Email address is BOBG1060 at netzero. com I'll email you soon-very busy at work and also working on my raceboat for the Ocean City Md. Race.
Your story is very similar to a situation here on OSO last year where the daughter of a fatal crash victim came to this site last year. "Still Crazy" was involved in a tragic crash in Key West. The daughter of the racer came here and herd alot of great stories of her dad.
I'm glad you found this site! Welcome to OSO!!
Bob

I seen an 8 meter in Fair Haven over by Terry's marina a couple weeks ago. Very cool ride.
