Cougar 41'
1 Attachment(s)
Does anyone have pics of this Cougar in Seahawk version?
It seems that was the last Cougar for Sal Magluta. Magluta maybe drove it in some(one only?) races in 1987. |
There were two Seahawk Aluminum Cougars..... That one and a 36'...... The 36 was the one that Magluta raced.... Willie Falcon ran the one in your picture I recall.
The 36 was unique in that it was the first with an aluminum tubular substructure , like a race car. The previous aluminum Cougars had traditional channel bulkhead and stringer construction. Brownie can elaborate far better than I on this topic..... T2x |

T2x,the boat of which you speak was the 38', the first cat that Magluta bought from Rodriguez in 1984. When the 36' was ready' Magluta continued to race on this last one and the 38' become the boat of Falcon. Then in the 1987 arrived a third cat Cougar,a 41.'

You are right, the most famous Seahawks cats were the 38' The Collection/Seahawk and starting from 1985 the little 36'.
Crouse in the last pages of Searace spoke about a 41' Cougar that had to be driven by Magluta after his 36' had been seriously damaged in the 1987 New Orleans race. This didn't happen because' Magluta had brought such wounds to forced him to stop racing for some time. It seems that 41' was drove by Willie Falcon that year. In the same 1987 the old 38' became Team Kaze and in 1988 was bought by the Franchman Marret and the cat went in Europe renamed Divin. The 36' apparently was destroyed. That 41' was drove by Steve Curtis with the old Seahawk's crew Jay and Lorenzo in the 1987's Key West World Championships giving the first Title to a British. After that race the cat became Bengal Bay Club for Kobayashi in the 1988's US season. I know it's a very muddled story and I hope that you can understand me in spite of my bad English. |

Marco i raced both Divin's with Maret,
The one of Malguta was the most lethal cat I ever raced......... You spent most of the race peering out of your crash hat at 90 degrees to your head, over 50 it just tried tio rip your head of and was a ***** for hooking and nose diving, think the best we did was 4th in Viareggio in 88... The Chris Craft of '87 was amazing, won 16 races including World Cup in Porto Cervo, and finished first class 2 in C/T/C only 14 seconds behind Fruitier in the Cougar ROCKY |

Here the 41'. Are clearly the bigger dimensions. Note the Team Seahawk colours and the writings "1984 US National Champion 1985" (the two Titles of Magluta) and the Magluta's personal race number #25.
There are no doubt about the fact it was a third Cougar tin cats of the Team Seahawk. In 1988 the same 41' in Bengal Bay Club version. |

I remember well the cat arrived in Viareggio one week before the race. Was so beautiful! I loved it! And I taken a lot of pictures and I remember that the cockpits were in the original version without semi-canopy. |

Those Seahawks make a little confusion in ours minds.:drink:
The only 38' was the first cat, former The Collection, then Seahawk in 1984 and Team Seahawk in 1986 for Magluta(1984) and Falcon. The 36' was the first cat builded for Magluta in 1985. The 41' was a second builded for Magluta. Here the 36'. It seems that it became Reporter for Curtis/Currington in 1988-89. |
Reporter was the Malguta cat that crashed and nearly killed him, it was supposed to be scrapped but cougar re built it from the ground up !!
It arrived lat at St Tropez in '66 for first round of Europeans, Stebie C had teamed Up with Fruitier and son..When the boat went in the water they found someone had used the wrong rivets and it was like the head of a watering can all along the topsides...................... |

I was going through a pile of old photos and found a number from the 1986 Key West Worlds. Some were of the old "tin" boats, others of interest to me........and a few I thought to be of historical value. Although they don't necessarily fit under the "41 Cougar" thread, I figured I'd post them anyway. It was at tragic Worlds, but a new era of safety was ushered in as a result. Mike |

Without a doubt, my all-time favorite "offshore" race boat....a work of art....everything changed that day.
|
I never saw that boat in person - the artwork alone as you imply looks pretty impressive. And to think too that the pods within the cockpit must have inspired a feeling of safety..........
|
My best Welcome on-board to you,Mikiedreb!
Also you don't have pics of the 41' but however you have posted some interesting photo. |
Black Tornado....I appreciate your hospitality !!!!! Thank-you. I have been lurking for quite a while, enjoying all the posts. I'm amazed at your recollection of details from the past. I have trouble remembering what I had for dinner last night!! I spent a number of years wrenching and racing offshore here in California in the mid 80's through the early 90's. Unfortunately, most of my time was spent building and fixing rather than taking photos. Please keep all the past history alive.
Mike PS.....nothing beats the sounds of a pair of Lambo's at full clip. Ciao !!!! |
mikiedreb, you are one of the old guards on OSO.
Only now I put my eyes on your join date. You was a driver? Can you speak about your experience(class,boat,results...)? Marco PS about the engines my hart it's for the old MerC V8,but for the tech the Lambo are thousands years ahead! |
Black Tornado...I spent my time as a navagator....another way of saying "mechanic". Most of our races were with the local west coast association POPBRA and MBRA, then run by Bob Nordskog. We started off grass-roots level racing with a converted 24' Specta Daycruiser "Portia"...big-block Mercruiser powered. Nothing like ocean racing in a little lake boat !!! High-points champs in 1986. Moved up to a 30' Larry Smith Scarab P50 "Warcry"....twin small-block Chevys w/Arneson drives. Next up was a 25' Warlock cat w/twin Merc O/B,s, also called "Warcry. We ran a number of OPT races along with the POPBRA circuit races.
The final ride was a 38' Active Cat which we completely rebuilt and had canopies installed. That project took a year and 1/2. It was the final "Warcry" boat. Twin Merc 750 EFI's with #5 speedmasters. In all, a dozen or so wins, one high points shampionship, a lot of hard work and many great friends. Mike |
Not a little thing.
I would like to see a photo of the Active canopied. I like the name "Warcry". |

Not trying to steal anyone´s thunder here - Marco I think this is the boat Mike is referring to. Sure was a good looking boat. Mike - do you have some more pictures? Would love to see them!
|
littlenige....that was our baby !!!!! WARCRY was beautiful. Four of us partnered in building and racing her. I'll post a few more pics later today.
