Cary / Cigarette 32 production
I wounder if anybody nows about the production of the the cary / cigarette 32. How many Cary 32s were made? When did it turn into the cigarette 32? Between what years did Cigarette produce it? Was the deck changed on the first cigarette 32 from the cary which means that the boss o´nova vas the only 32 "made" by cigarette? And can anybody confirm that the 31 Bullet is actually a cut down 32 since they have the same width? Pics of 32s are very welcome.

What I have found this far is this.
The original ”The Cigarette” was a 32' Cary, built at Hydroglas in Hialeah by Bob Vroman in 1969. The plug was built there (in secret) by Nick Chapman, who cut the chines on Brownies bandsaw at Nova Marine. The hull was designed by Harry Schoell, and was a modification of the very successful full-height 28' Magnum, also designed by Harry Schoell. Aronow had three, two in USA and one in europe. Vincenzo Balestrieri, purchased the european one for the 1970 season and named her Black Tornado and built a new one raced by Cosentino in two races only also named Black Tornado. In 1972 one of the american used "The Cigarette" was shipped to Australia since Don had sold the boat to Val Carr. That boat is now destroyed. The one of Cosentino used was customized in 1971 and cut down to 31' with a lighter deck in wood. In Viareggio-Bastia-Viareggio 1971 race with rough seas the deck started to break down and Balestrieri sold it. The 31' was sent back to USA where it in the Sam Griffith Trophy in 1972 was used by the rookie De Angelis and then used by Al Sahlman to set a new speed record in 1974 at Marina Del Rey with the name "The Little Cigarette". There was Peter Rothschild´s - Thunderballs and one named Cigarillo with 4 Mercury outboards and Willie Myers - White Label and Bill Wishnick´s Boss O'Nova II, that was not a Cary, but a real Cigarette 32' (it had the deck from the new 36'). During 1972-73 Willie MacDonald drove the former Boss O'Nova II as Wild Willie Boss O'Nova. Where these the only ones made and where are they today? |
Aronow called the 32' boat a Cary because of his non-compete clauses with all the other boat companies that he had sold. He never honored any of them. Elton Cary didn't get a mold for a year. I designed the 31' Bulllet from scratch. I don't recall a 'pleasure version' of the 32', which quickly became a 36'.

How did the 32 become a 36? Was the orignal length just stretched or was the whole design blown up similar to what happened with the 49 Cary?

I have always wondered when they stretched a hull did they just add on to the back?
