There was another Popeye's super boat with a big tail fin and a narrow enclosed cockpit...not the Goetz... I believe Al never ran it as he was retiring..and instead it went directly to Japan where it competed in the Atami cup...but carried the Popeye's name and colors.

Brownie?.

Not sure how many 'Heavy Metal's there were, but this was a CUV - you can make out the CUV logo behind the cockpit area.

Going back to the very first post in the thread
Class III Wood. The Specialist was a revamp of an earlier boat that was tandum & a bit ......... ohhh errrrrrr
From what I recall it was rebuilt change to the tunnel & moved to side by side seating also reducing the picklefork.
PJC would know I'm sure Graham or Littlenige are a couple of bloodhounds.
"Catwezel" rings a bell, maybe but heck it's 35 years ago !!!

Cockpit re-vamp as per your observations, but I`m not so sure about the tunnel change. The Specialist and its previous name Catastrophe II had pickleforks.Sure your not getting mixed up with Catastrophe 1 (1975) ex-Andycat (1974).
Catweazle was ex-circuit boat Miss Cougar which Earl of Normanton rolled in 1970 Paris 6hr and did his back in.
See next post.

I get more confused as the years go by............... It's an age thing.
Just recalled it was a revamp of a previous build that was all.

The Old boy (GRS) picked up Syn-cat & converted it to a Single for the 82 season (Mrs Mac) that went really well & drove like a charm, poor motor really dampened the results & a struggle on the finances at the time didn't help.
Boat got sold on to SWP.

DareDevil 10-27-2008 09:06 AM

Whasent there a cougar called "POWERPLAY" ?

I think late 80's got damaged in KW (maybe 90's).

BROWNIE 10-27-2008 09:23 AM

That was a Sport Class wooden cat built in the Phillipines. They blew it over (barrel roll) while leading out to Sands Key Light. 1982 or 3. Belonged to the guy who owned Powerplay boat Co.

Ryan Beckley 10-27-2008 09:25 AM

That was 1984-85 it was Danny's 33 wood cat, they repaired it with some aluminum I think and raced it. It is now a pleasure boat in long island NY. Doc Legori owned it last I knew.

DareDevil 10-27-2008 11:08 AM

WOW, i did not know that D. Weinstein raced a cat.
I quess thats wy his company had the same name.

Thanks Brownie and Ryan, you guys just know everything.

You should right a book about classic and newer Raceboats,
should sell.:ernaehrung004:

Who was in the boat with Danny? I can picture him as clear as day, but I can' recall his name.

Ryan Beckley 10-27-2008 12:27 PM

I have no idea, I was 10 at the time......

The damage - circa 1984 Jan I think at the Cougar yard.

Ryan Beckley 10-28-2008 09:38 AM

Wow, I don't remember that much damage. I remember the patching a smaller hole in KW with some Aluminum one year.

more cat questions

Does anyone know what happened to wolverine 792 (blue and white colour scheme). Great looking cat I think it was a 38' Cogar but was it plastic ? Did it appear as a brown and white number 45 Benihana did it then become one of the Mr. Roberts boats ? The Wolverine cat seemed to run well in the 1981 KW finals where Michel Meynard's new light weight Fayva crashed out. Be interesting to know the boats full history plus the usual question..... where is it know ?

littlenige 11-22-2008 05:14 AM

I would say that these 3 boats are one and the same.....(Active cat). Can't remember in what order though. Somewhere on here is a thread about the Active cats I think that will answer the question.

bill63 11-22-2008 10:18 AM

those three boats are the same, it started as wolverine then bud lite then aj roberts. i believe roberts crash it in lake michigan and that was the end of it. it was the first active 37 cat made. it was never the 45 benehana that boat i believe became warecry after many different names and owners.

Black Tornado 11-22-2008 03:46 PM

One of the first Active built was the Hublot of Walter Ragazzi in 1982. It didn't finish the season because of the waves of the Solent during the Worlds at Poole in August.

P.S. for flying fish: you must correct the data about the Chrysler Laser that seems evident it wasn't the former Wolverine.

jcsuk 11-22-2008 06:30 PM

active cats

Sorry to be stupid here but were these active cats anything to do with cougar ? Were they built under license if not who designed them and where were they built and I presume they were plastic ?

butch ryan 11-22-2008 09:36 PM

the first active cats were built in 80,81 and they were not the bud boat

butch ryan 11-22-2008 09:38 PM

they were built and designed by ross focht. made of kevlar and graphite

Butch why the Couger head on the boat ? You had the first 33', than Gary ran the first updated Black 33' in Key West. That one became Bob Kehrig's Couger M-588 that won the worlds 1983, all had the Cougar logo ??

twistman 11-22-2008 10:30 PM

James Beard designed the first active cat for Ross and Bud. I beleive not to long after that he passed of cancer, also I was told he was the founder of cougar.

twistman 11-23-2008 11:53 AM

That is a great question Bill, AKA (PUSH-IT) But big daddy would be the only one that could answer that one.

32storm 11-23-2008 02:35 PM

The aluminum cat Chairman of the Board, was renamed and also ran under Turkish Express.

I know of 6, 33' Actives, Trust ME, M-588 Couger, Blue Max, Miss Gallo, Pete Smiths pleasure Wolverine that I bought from him, and I believe there was one more red & white one that Rich Anderson or Don Nell's had. The black Trust Me is now Gangsta Style, The Max now with the beeks off, and the white & teal one I had. I helped put a pleasure deck on Bob Kehrig's M-588 but he sold it some time ago. Where are the others ?????????

bill63 11-23-2008 05:08 PM

hey mark give us a stab on the number of 37's

butch ryan 11-23-2008 05:09 PM

well you know ross, apparently they were a beard copy or design , which ever i don't know. most of the early ones had a cougar logo somewhere . mine was across the top of the deck.

flying fish 11-24-2008 07:51 AM

Active Minefield

Chrysler ex -Wolverine no so.I know,I know Marco. The result data on Boatmad is so out of date.In actual fact trawling through the old Active thread gives more questions than answers. In summary this is my latest listing.

Wolverine to Bud Light to Mr.Roberts.

Flapjack to Benihana to Flapjack

Hublot

Chrysler Laser to GK Systems to Daddy Cool II to Celutel to Proirity One

Panasonic

C & G Quicksilver

The above 6 boats were OPI/SB and I know there were others in the lower classes.

bill63 11-24-2008 08:52 AM

As far as the 37' Actives I will talk to the Apotle of speed Red Crain, before we have beverages. After the Key West worlds last week I heard Red reminded Steve Curtis about how he blew the tunnel out of the Mr Roberts at the 1985 Grand Haven Race, and beached her.
