There was another Popeye's super boat with a big tail fin and a narrow enclosed cockpit...not the Goetz... I believe Al never ran it as he was retiring..and instead it went directly to Japan where it competed in the Atami cup...but carried the Popeye's name and colors.

Not sure how many 'Heavy Metal's there were, but this was a CUV - you can make out the CUV logo behind the cockpit area.

Going back to the very first post in the thread
Class III Wood. The Specialist was a revamp of an earlier boat that was tandum & a bit ......... ohhh errrrrrr From what I recall it was rebuilt change to the tunnel & moved to side by side seating also reducing the picklefork. PJC would know I'm sure Graham or Littlenige are a couple of bloodhounds. "Catwezel" rings a bell, maybe but heck it's 35 years ago !!! |

Cockpit re-vamp as per your observations, but I`m not so sure about the tunnel change. The Specialist and its previous name Catastrophe II had pickleforks.Sure your not getting mixed up with Catastrophe 1 (1975) ex-Andycat (1974).
Catweazle was ex-circuit boat Miss Cougar which Earl of Normanton rolled in 1970 Paris 6hr and did his back in. See next post. |

The Old boy (GRS) picked up Syn-cat & converted it to a Single for the 82 season (Mrs Mac) that went really well & drove like a charm, poor motor really dampened the results & a struggle on the finances at the time didn't help. Boat got sold on to SWP. |
Whasent there a cougar called "POWERPLAY" ?
I think late 80's got damaged in KW (maybe 90's). |
That was a Sport Class wooden cat built in the Phillipines. They blew it over (barrel roll) while leading out to Sands Key Light. 1982 or 3. Belonged to the guy who owned Powerplay boat Co.
|
That was 1984-85 it was Danny's 33 wood cat, they repaired it with some aluminum I think and raced it. It is now a pleasure boat in long island NY. Doc Legori owned it last I knew.
|
WOW, i did not know that D. Weinstein raced a cat.
I quess thats wy his company had the same name. Thanks Brownie and Ryan, you guys just know everything. You should right a book about classic and newer Raceboats, should sell.:ernaehrung004: |

The damage - circa 1984 Jan I think at the Cougar yard.
|
Wow, I don't remember that much damage. I remember the patching a smaller hole in KW with some Aluminum one year.

more cat questions
Does anyone know what happened to wolverine 792 (blue and white colour scheme). Great looking cat I think it was a 38' Cogar but was it plastic ? Did it appear as a brown and white number 45 Benihana did it then become one of the Mr. Roberts boats ? The Wolverine cat seemed to run well in the 1981 KW finals where Michel Meynard's new light weight Fayva crashed out. Be interesting to know the boats full history plus the usual question..... where is it know ?
|

I would say that these 3 boats are one and the same.....(Active cat). Can't remember in what order though. Somewhere on here is a thread about the Active cats I think that will answer the question.
|
those three boats are the same, it started as wolverine then bud lite then aj roberts. i believe roberts crash it in lake michigan and that was the end of it. it was the first active 37 cat made. it was never the 45 benehana that boat i believe became warecry after many different names and owners.
|
One of the first Active built was the Hublot of Walter Ragazzi in 1982. It didn't finish the season because of the waves of the Solent during the Worlds at Poole in August.

active cats
Sorry to be stupid here but were these active cats anything to do with cougar ? Were they built under license if not who designed them and where were they built and I presume they were plastic ?
|
the first active cats were built in 80,81 and they were not the bud boat
|

That is a great question Bill, AKA (PUSH-IT) But big daddy would be the only one that could answer that one.

Active Minefield
Chrysler ex -Wolverine no so.I know,I know Marco. The result data on Boatmad is so out of date.In actual fact trawling through the old Active thread gives more questions than answers. In summary this is my latest listing.
Wolverine to Bud Light to Mr.Roberts. Flapjack to Benihana to Flapjack Hublot Chrysler Laser to GK Systems to Daddy Cool II to Celutel to Proirity One Panasonic C & G Quicksilver Blue Max The above 6 boats were OPI/SB and I know there were others in the lower classes. Clear as mud for you Marco. |
