Red has now confirmed this to be true.

Brad Zastrow 11-24-2008 10:11 AM

Cougars were built in England correct? Are Cougars built in Miami the same company?

Ryan Beckley 11-24-2008 10:23 AM

Some of the Cougar Glass Vees were built in Miami I think. The Aluminum boats came from England. The wood cats were from the Phillipeans.

Sorry h2oboater,but has Red confirmed both that Chrysler Laser was the repaired Benihana and that the Express was the Vento's Panasonic?

To remove or to add mud to the Actives saga there was a second Flap Jack Active 37'. This one below?

Red confirmed that his Chrysler Laser was the repaired Benihana. Red powered her with two Chrysler 426 Hemi's, and they ran well. I believe Butch said his Express became the Panasonic. I Will ask Red about the Flap Jack.

I am selling a Cougar fiberglass cat that was made in Miami. Is this the same company that made the race boats being discussed here?

Flapjack Confusion

1 Attachment(s)
If Benihana crashed in 82 and became Chrysler,it seems odd that Quam in 83 had Flapjack painted as his boat in 82 before lettiing Aoki have it.See pic in Lee County Regatta 83.
Marco`s pic is the red Flapjack which also raced as Thundercat in west coast races, which I have taken as being his only active boat,or did Quam have 3 active boats?????
Or was it Quam-Aoki-Quam-Kaiser-Crain etc.
Answers on a postcard or maybe an AO sheet at this rate.

In 1982 Quam had a new Active cat built, and raced it as Flap Jack before July 1982. By July Rocky became the driver & Quam the throttled. They won the July 14 1982 Benihana race in Quams renamed [BENIHANA] Active cat. They crashed this Benihana in the Sept 1982 Kiekhaefer race. Active took this cat back for repair and sold it to Red Crain. Quam got a new Active cat for the 1983 race season that was named Flap Jack, and maybe Thunder Cat ? Quam would not win with this Active cat [Flap Jack] untill the 1985 Cape Coral race. Red raced his Chrysler Laser Active cat with Bob Kaiser in the 1983 season. Red would rent, & race this cat under many names over the years. Hope this clears up how there were two Flap Jacks Active cats that I know of.

they are not the same company, active/cougar cats were made in michigan the company has went under different names through the years /image/baja/express/ ocean express ross focht sr has been behind all these companies.

fastdonzi 11-25-2008 10:52 PM

Brad, The Cougar cat you are selling was made by cougar in miami, that particular boat was owend by Ross Perot. it's Kevlar (the first 30' kevlar they made) when built new it had counter rotating motors, I'll tell you he spared NO Expense when that boat was built, Dupont was there for the layup, he had his own riggers there to supervise the rigging. thats was a hell of a boat back then.

flying fish 11-26-2008 01:37 AM

Quam`s Actives

Thanks for that full reply `h20boater`.As `Black Tornado` knows, when an owner has several boats of the same name and look it can become a bit of a brain teaser.

I know what you mean, Red would have a new name on his cat at almost every race. The sign painters loved him.

Pete Huber (Hubner?) was the black haired big guy that rode in the boat also. Ted Tolmans twins had the sister ship to Dannys 32 wood cat. It was painted yellow and sponsered by some shirt co. they raced class 2 in europe, the boat was rigged and painted in Miami.

The 2 aluminum 46' V's where built in Miami, the Alumium cats where built in England. Then they made the glass 46's in Miami as well as the 30' cat (non race boat) only about 6 of them(30' cats) built while they where there. Tony Roberts made his own mold for the 46' V bottom from a boat cougar left when they moved. Cougar took their molds with them.

Ryan Beckley 11-26-2008 01:25 PM

There are some Cougar V molds in Clearwater still?????

Those are probably Tony's molds. IDK what he did with them when he got out of the biz. I know Cougar took theirs back to england.

I'm sure that someone has posted pics of this but I couldn't find them, I took these yesterday while trying to avoid LA traffic. In a boatyard b/t venice beach and LAX. just HAD to stop, you don't see classic raceboats like this in MO very often.

Never mind... Wish I'd found her a year ago... The current owner is a good guy, but she's done. We'll be drinking Coors Light out of her remains soon enough.

My Dad's old throttleman, Tom Akoury, throttled Dirty Laundry as well.

Not Caliente... they ended up on the sandbar.

Not Mich Light/ Kaama. Betty Broke her ankle. I rode with her in the back of the ambulance which broke down on the way to Mariners hosp. in Tavernier.

Lil Rhino won Sport class. with Marv Marter on the thottles and Sandra driving.

Pepe... I think i'm a year off... Im must be talking about 80? The race ran for 2 years and then nothing until 1984 when Joe Roth bought HI. I chaired the race with Vic Speilberg. Bad Company won overall that year and George Hertel, Joe Roth III and I came in 2nd after swimming "Fever" over the finish line.

the first time I saw a Cougar cat was in Moscow Idaho. I took a look at it as wonder what in the heck it was because it kind of looked like a Shark with solid decks yet much different. I located the owner and thats how I found out what the brand name was, but it was more like 16 or 18 feet long so may be a different boat that what you are asking about.
