Offshore Boat Restorations
Current mood: productive
Category: Sports
Ever since my childhood, I have adopted an interest in boat racing from the shores and pits of Lake Washington (Seattle area) during the early 70's for the hydroplanes and then sport of Offshore Racing only reading about it in the Miaim newspapers. From a simple curiosity, my involvement began in the sport that has sparked my current desire to reinforce the legacy in offshore boat racing – thus, connecting the past, present, and future of the sport with those who engineered it and the boats that founded it.
A once in a life time opportunity has recently come to my devotion. I have acquired a Magnum legacy, the 1967 Maltese Magnum (4) 28', that was designed by Harry Shoell and in which that same year, legendary offshore racer Don Aronow won the Union of International Motorboating (UIM) World Driver's Championship and the United States Championship never before accomplished. In 1967, this legacy was strengthened as it continued to make history with the following event:
"Don went back out to the West Coast at the end of October for the Long Beach-San Francisco Classic, and while failing to finish, never the less made history: Don and Norris "Knocky" House survived a collision with a low flying press helicopter, which clipped Don's bow with one of its pontoons, when Don's Magnum jumped some 15-feet out of the water."… "This may have been the first and only reported collision between boat and helicopter ever in an offshore powerboat race. It led to the '500-foot rule.'" (Aronow, Michael, Don Aronow: The King of Thunderboat Row, 1994, pg 78), this is one of the greatest stories told of offshore ocean racing.
After the world championship season, the boat was sold to Billy Martin and renamed to the "Hustler II", which won two UMI ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com
ffice:smarttags" />........U.S. single-engine championships. Later, this same boat was sold to Frank Lach and renamed the "White Knight." Finally, approximately 3 years ago, a friend Robert G., purchased the boat and now I have become its new and privileged owner.
This show quality restoration choice is one of the only 1967 Maltese Magnum 28' left.
In 1967 Driver Don & Knocky raced six Maltese Magnum's, three in the ....United States with the hull number (4) white hulls and three in ....Europe, with dark green hulls. I've performed some insensitive checking and may have located the ........U.S. out-board boat to use for decking structure, the Magnum other (4) Maltese Magnum's of 1967 and I'm fairly sure they do not exist in this restorable condition.
My intent is to restore this cherished legacy and honor the racers of the sport, as well as to show the race setups in those early grueling times of offshore racing when races exceeded 400 miles in any and all types of conditions.
The boat will be used for:
Manufacture's brochures and promo's
Spectator attraction at the major races.
Participations at major races as a VIP/factory pace boat.
Participations at major boat shows as one of the centerpiece.
On Display at the larger boat dealerships, & Mercury Marine Racing events
Magazine photo shoots and early day race stories & coverage.
Major Poker Run VIP/pace boat.
Other volunteer efforts.
My hope is that the people in the sport of offshore racing & boating would like to participate and volunteer in this great endeavor – the very foundation of offshore racing that without these legendary figures such as Don Aronow the sport of offshore racing may not of flourished.
This is a non-profit restoration & the boat and or copyright information will not be for sale.
The project is showing strong support from major marine manufactures and a web site is under construction to show the past, present and current pictures as well the progress with all the past history's of the boat and the early race times.
I am currently looking for volunteer support in the following areas:
Knowledge of the exact layout details
Fiber glass finishing
Gel-coat finishing
Color blend finishing
Trailer sandblasting and painting
Transportation efforts
Rigging support
Locating rigging parts
If your interested in joining the support efforts or you have any information of value, please leave a posting.
Restorations in progress.
Two boats are being restored currently in Federal Way, Washington, the back ground pic and the pool pic are of the number 4 Aronow boat, I'll cover the second one latter in the blog, overall, the project is going great; there have been some of the 'first-time' wows in restoring a legendary boat of this kind. The re-work of the Maltese Magnum (1967) Don Aronow race boat is going slower than expected, the transom has been completed on the inside the boat. The original transom setup in 1967 housed a single Mercury 427 –450 H.P. with a Mercury II and in late 67, early 68, the drive was changed-out to a single Mercury Speed Master III with more reliability with the same 427-450. It ran the SM III for two or three years, then in 1970's the boat was changed out to small block 350's and TRS drives, it was running as the White Knight under Frank Lach from New Jersey. As the history goes from the long hours of research, Aronow ran a total of six 28' Maltese Magnums in 1967 (2) with (3) 110 horsepower outboards (Mercury's), (2) with single 427-450 h.p. and (2) with 427-450 h.p. twins. He ran white hulls in the ....U.S. and green hull in ....Europe.
This boat is the U.S. single and history show's this also is the boat in the San Francisco to Long Beach race, Don launched the boat into a low flying helicopter the the forward bow cleat ripped a hole in the copters pontoon, the water was big and the drive was damaged and the boat finished in second place. Don Aronow went on to win the 67 world & U.S championship.
The other boat is a 22' number 12 Autocoast Maurader built by the owner/driver Erine Kanzler it's won the 1972 rum-runner 9 race in ........California with local hydro lore Ron Jones and Bob Norskog founder of powerboat magazine in tow some five minutes behind Kanzler.
This boat has sold to a new owner in ........Canada which now he's become a good friend he's plans are to complete the restore to 100% complete from 1972.

I remember Ernie's #12 Autocoast Marauder well. It was the special "flat deck" model with a 482 MerCruiser and a speedmaster drive. A couple of the Marauder "cabin cruiser" models also raced the POPBRA circuit for a few seasons -- Jim Solum and sons were regulars on the race series. I might still have a photo or two of Ernie's boat -- you might also want to check with "Mr. Toad" on this board. Ernie and the Vogel's raced in the same class for a couple of seasons.

I thought it might be nice for everyone who needs this to write down why here. The issue tracker thread is for votes only. I'll start.

I came across this website and found some comments about the Maruader, I own a 1971 #150 24.5 ft flybridge Marauder, owned it since 1977. Bought it when I lived in Newport Beach, Ca. Runs great and in good shape, still run it on Lake Powell and turns heads. All teak interior, twin screw original Gel and original engines, replaced all fabric 3 times. This thing came with a 140 gallon fuel tank in the bow. Will post some pictures when I find some. Nice to see some people talk about the Maruader, has a great history, held the under 25 ft offshore record for years on a 100 mile course at62 mph. It is truly a classic, built to last. Love to keep and maintain the classics, also own a 1976 Bellanca Turbo Viking airplane, it to is a classic. Have a family drag team, go to www.bottmotorsports.com Dan
Maybe thats why I like Magnum Sedans too.

the "Hustler II "of Martin was a 27' Magnum with single engine that Aronow drove sporadically in 1968 and was not the single-engine 28'Magnum that Aronow drove in some races in the U.S. in 1967 which later became "White Knight". The pic below confirm this clearly.

Aronow not brought in Europe three 28 'Magnum dark green but only two, one all white.
A single engine(dark green sides-white deck and hull) that after the Cowes-Torquay race was sold to Englishman Kennerly and a three outboards all white, which I think was sold in Sweden.
In the USA the same year Aronow drove alternately a 28' (all in white) single engine with stern drive, a 28'(all in white and whose existence is uncertain) with two engines and 2 stern drives, a 28'(all in white) with two engines and a drive shaft, which was later bought by Balestrieri, and a 28 '(all in white) with three outboards that probably was the same who was later brought in Europe.
The total 28'Magnum drove by Aronow in 1967 is maybe still 6(or 5) boats but with 4(3?) runners in races in USA and two in European races.
