Ah Graham! You live in the middle of the history of the World Maritime!
You not imagine how I envy you!

Some gossip about the Dreadnought

There is a second option for the name Dreadnought which Cohen gave to 35 '.
Maybe he was referring to the name of Marc Anthony's Roman triremes, defeated at the Battle of Actium of 31 BC .
Curiously, the only time Crouse cites in his Searace the name of Dreadnought is precisely to mention the fact that Attilio Petroni built in his yard Canav a replica of the ship of Marc Anthony,"Dreadnought" who then would be used to shoot some scenes of the famous film-colossal "Cleopatra" in 1963.

1967 Gateway - should read 2 x Mercruiser

1967 VBV - didn`t realize he used the outboard boat?

1967 Round Nassau - see attachment.Info correct for 1968 boat,but see result list.200hp seems a bit small for a 28ft Magnum.

1968 Hennesy NY - see attachments 1 & 2.One minute it`s 28ft then looses a ft in the results sheet.More like a 28ft with 2 engines.

1968 Hennesey Long Beach - see attacment (should read 1968 not 1958).27ft with single engine.

1968 Hurricane Classic - see attachment. What is all this about.A new 27ft Cigarette? or was it a Magnum called `Cigarette`.It`s a Crousey report which he changes to a 28ft Cigarette in the Searace book!

1967 Gateway - correct Mercruiser not Mercury. I'm taking the defects of journalists?

1967 VBV - with three Mercury (see pic below).

1967 Round Nassau - I think you put the attachment wrong.
You posted that of the Bahamas 500.

1968 Hennessy NY - Difficult to say. 28' vs. 27' - 2 to 1.

1968 Hennessy Long Beach - Here I make one comment.
Hugh Hulman (I think the current owner of 28 'single engine ex "White Knight") affirm that Aronow in the 1968 Hennessy Long Beach drove the 28' single engine which ran the same race the year before. The only difference is the deck changed with the fwd advanced cockpit.
I don't believe in this theory but I put the photos for comparisons and the opinion of those who wish to occur in the thread.

1968 Hurricane Classic - Unfortunately this race the only report that I have never said wich type of boat ran Aronow.
I hope someone intervenes to help in this thread that is languishing in a duet between me and you.:flag:

Oops. Not 67 Round Nassau but Bahamas 500.Soon the dementure will set in and you`ll be on your own Marco,to fly the historic flag.
We await the U.S.Cavalry to storm up and sort the remaining unsolved mysteries. How long have you got.

Ignoring the `Searace Book of Blind Alleys`,here is another 68 Hurricane report indicating Aronow raced a Magnum as per Martin, who was in Hustler,a 27ft Magnum which was probably Aronow`s 68 race winning boat, and maybe Aronow had a new 27ft? Magnum for the 68 Hurricane Classic.
Also the 68 Miami - Key West indicates Aronow raced a spare 27ft Magnum single engine job after his 17ft (good old crousey) caught fire and sank in the Miami - Nassau race.
This `spare ` 27ft Magnum could have been the boat Martin took over for the Hurricane race, and maybe it was also the Kennerley boat used in the Miami - Nassau.

Answers on an A3 sheet ,and sent to the Home for Bewildered Powerboat Archivists.

Don't you chaps have anything else to do?

flying fish 03-24-2010 01:52 PM

Sorry if the sorting of the history of sport annoys you Brownie.

Hoping you would furnish us with information to piece together the history. It would get far more respect.

Unfortunately we can`t all post ripping yarns on the high seas,so a little tolerance and encouragement for those who share the same passion for the sport wouldn`t go amiss.
