Thanks Brownie but I had understood even though it took me some minutes.
But apart your problems of underestimated solved in 1947 you still do not have answered if the word Maltese also stemmed from a Bogart movie....

Do You have any info on the 69's? I have a 27 Sport that my paperwork shows a 1969 Magnum, hull 1227, power on th etitle says a pair of small block Holman Moodys that have since been replaced. The drives were also changed to TRS's.

Any info would be appreciated.

Brownie,

Thank you! My boat was built for a George Butler, owner of Butler Aviation and a long list of car dealerships in the Boston area. He lived on Marblehead Neck . . . Bud, if you are reading this it would be nice to know if his name is on the records.

I just need to figure out how long it is . . .:drink:

Where did you get the number [1227] ? If you look inside the dash and it says 12 wrote in black marker then it would be hull #12. Hull # 12 went to J Katz back in 1968. The hull numbers did not go on the transom till around 1972. What color is your sport, purple & white ?

Curious is the fact that Dreadnought was the name of the British Navy warship that at the beginning of the twentieth century was the archetype of the modern battleships.

Gents,
Good Morning from Germany!
Actually there was nothing strange at all rearding the name of the 35 Magnum, to be called the "Dreadnought".
My father was English, my great girlfriend is English, I was an American air cadet to seek enlistment to the RAF, and my family is Navy from back to the 1930's. I had just acquired the Magnum 35 from Don, and the Bahamas 500 was created for the following season, just a few months away. This was to be the most formidable sea race imagined, for civilians, in small open hi-performance craft, and there was a daunting vision of all that could happen out to sea, at that time. So I decided I wanted the Man o' War name for my ship..which was the largest raceboat in the American fleet at the time,......so that was how the name of the famous British battleship from early in the 20th Century came to pass for the Magnum. In that boat, we feard nothing at sea.........we carried spare v-drives for the race..........I remember that night, after pulling into Lucaya , after Odell and Sirois had finished first and second, and then checking out the forward stowage space.......the perfect form of the two Casale v-500 drives had cut thru the sole deck, leaving the perfect shape of them as a lasting memory of the pounding of those 15 hrs 13 minutes that caused me to lose 7 lbs of water from my body in the foul-weather suit I was wearing. I had to use safety pins to hold up my trousers at the Award dinner the following night. It was the toughest physical experience of my life...........and one of the most memorable after 43 years.
Great stories from all of you. I will visit England in a week or two to discuss with Mike of COPCO, the upcoming races.....

Additionally the Dreadnaught was redesigned by Barcone Marine into a center open sportfiserman with a tuna tower by Pipewelders. The forward stowage space was converted into a fine forward cabin with basic requirements for overnighters if one wished. The boat was repowered with twin 427 cu in Crusaders @ 350 hp and continued to be a top performer.

Thanks Barry for sharing your experiences.Good eh!

I do so hope you make it to Cowes. The sight of two Jim Wynne classics (Ghost Rider 28FT and Gee 40FT) roaring down the Solent together would be quite something.
