I talked to Sonic several yrs ago about them and they said they were long since gone.
I'd really like to splash one. Been working for a local boat shop off and one that does very high end work and taught me a ton.
We build a 28' twin O/B fish boat thats all balsa cored and vacuum infused. I figure w/current construction methods I could probably shave 1000lbs of the hull weight.
Add a pad to the bottom, and extend strakes to the transom (like I was going to do) and it would probably run mid 60's w/a single 300hp D.I. O/B while getting 4 mpg.
Slide that motor over, screw on a 2nd one you'd probably be in the mid 90's and have a cabin equal to a 30' I/O boat and tow it w/a mini van.

Finally got my 12 v coffee pot working :drink: Stop laughing, this important **** boys!
Went through several on the old boat before finding one that worked and screwed up and left it in the boat to go to Panama.
Tried this one a few mnths back and after 20-30 mins it was starting to brew! (they are very slow) Said screw it, went to breakfast and came back to two dead batteries!!
I knew the batteries were older and of unknown origin but was saving $$$.
Did a test here on the trailer the other day. Ran off one battery w/a volt meter hooked to it. (old one would run off a single battery)
Started @ 12.4 volts w/the pot on which pulls about 16 amps.
30 mins later it was down to 9.4 volts!
My power outlet is only about 18" from the batteries but I didn't have as heavy of wire as I wanted for that run.
So I upgraded that wire to 10 gauge and replaced both batteries w/new 625 CCA's and repeated the test.
Started w/I think 12.6 v's and dropped to 12.3 or 4 and stabilized.
40 - 45 mins later I had a 12 cup pot of coffee :evilb:
Finished the test by successfully starting one of the motors off that single battery. I normally use one as a "house" battery while staying on the boat and having 2nd for reserve. Also safe this way in case you get polluted and fall asleep w/everything on but wake up to a dead battery. Switch to #2, fire the motors then switch back to all.
Also had problems w/the port motor last time out. Ran 10 mls @ speed w/no issue then stopped to dolphin watch. Port motor died @ idle and wouldn't re-fire. Ended up being the second of two new ignition switches!!!! Both were new BRP made in Mexico switches thank you very much!
Also had idling issues w/that motor and cured it w/a new e-bay VRO pump. Both these motors are sold and I hope to get on the water this weekend or next before swapping back to the motors I built.

I had a plan in motion last yr to buy a small cuddy to leave in Ohio for doing the big lake with. That was when round trip air was about a $100. per. It then tripled and that plan went out the window.
Looking at maybe taking two weeks next season and dragging the Sonic up. Many Ohio boating friends fanning the flames :lolhit:
Course now w/gas @ near $4. per that makes a $1000. tow!
Sounds better though after doing the math to realize it's only a couple hundred more that two plane tickets and puts us there w/boat and tow pig.
Just had Ohio friends down w/their 30' Velocity and were telling them that the Lake Erie islands are stupid expensive when you don't have your own boat. Had no idea how lucky we were w/30+ yrs of playin on our own boats yup there.

Thanks for the compliments too. Keep thinking something newer and bigger but we're kinda spoiled for what we can get away with in this size boat :drink:

I'm looking at doing a trip this Summer. Will depend on funds among other things.

BTW, hows your weather :lolhit: Has been mid/high 70's day time and low/mid 60's at night since you left.
We're going out today and maybe weekend next week.
Cheryl has a week off next month so it may be Keys/Fort Myers Beach time :drink:

My Baby goes to the upholstery shop!
Dropped it off last night to have the cockpit done. Can't even wait.
Busted my ass an spent every spare dime on this project over the last 2 1/2 yrs getting it the way I want it.
The finishing touch will be upholstery :ernaehrung004:

Get that transom ready for the bracket yet??

1slownismo 03-13-2012 11:56 PM

Twins. I'm local and looking at an 1980 sonic CC with bracket no motors anything I should particularly check extensively. I noticed cracking in the first strake from the keel on both sides? Any thoughts. Other than that boat seems solid. Anything would be much appreciated. Thanks
