Motors are......

It's funny how you can put all the carb/cam/head/piston/etc work into a motor you want, and it can all come down to a stupid ignition box/coil/pack whatever. Remind me what motors are on there now? Ported and worked older 'rudes right? RPM drops offs always suck to chase. But you've gotten everything else with this girl, I imagine you'll get this handled quick as well!
Oh and no exhaust reliefs will definitely slow a boat down haha:angry-smiley-038: I modified the ports, did my own head/combustion chamber design, Boysen reeds and a couple of other tricks. Everything perfect they should make 270 - 280 HP's per and pull to 7000 - 7500 but will probably, rarely go over 6K. I want to play w/this boat not work on it. Whats cool w/a 2 stroke is that if you change the ports, that's the same as changing cam, rocker ratio, valve size, head intake/exhaust runners and intake manifold on a 4 stroke. It's all done w/a die grinder and labor too. Course if your off on your specs to now own a paper weight ;) W/my plans for this boat the plans from the start was complete/new ignitions for both motors. This breed/era is known for ignition issues if it ain't right. Lots of other symptoms/problems falsely diagnosed when it was really a 15 yr old power pack shutting down after being heat soaked. Same is also true in reverse. Many blame the ignition when that ain't it. So yeah, those motors are now on the boat in place of the stock '99 250's I bought while trouble shooting teething pains early in. I'm used to running screaming, obnoxious hot rod motors over the yrs (old sonic even had open exhaust)so this is kind of nice to hear nothing but wind in this one. To the point that I'm now going to build wind deflectors to quiet it down even more. Must be getting old. |
Finally got the time for some testing and actually learned some things.
Still struggling w/way high slip numbers and the motors not wanting to fly the bow of the boat like the last one did. Best I've seen to date has been 70.0 in excellent condition w/my 26" Rakers. Went to the ramp just for a base line before I changed anything (no changes from last blast) and saw 68.5 in terrible conditions. Strong enough wind that I had to run some down tab on one side just to keep the boat level. Hated the # but it is what it is. One major concern was the starboard motor turning 65/6600 and the port only turning 6200. Went home and pulled the cowlings to check the power packs (notorious on these motors) knowing I'd replaced one and figured it was the one spinning up. WRONG. The port motor had the new power pack so now what?? Was about to start guessing/ordering parts when I remembered my high slip #'s and theorized the starboard motor may be high enough to be cavitating way worse than the port. Dropped the motors and inch and went back to the ramp. Bingo. I was rewarded w/both motors at 6200 and a 71.4 run and slip down from 15% to 13%. Next test was toe in/out on the motors. Normally run with them even but after much reading by people smarter than me I had them toed out 3/8" for all tests to this point. So at the ramp I set them even and resplashed and got another 71.4. No change. So the good is, by going down w/the motors I am now seeing evidence that I'm going in the right direction. I'd already done all of this before but was also changing many other things (including props) to dilute my results. Clearly I'm still too high though based on slip #'s and the fact it takes near full up trim to get the speed. Old boat (identical other than 4" less set back and lower motors) ran neutral trim at speed w/slip #'s in the sub 10% range showing how efficient it was. Here's some recent pix's too. Don't think I have any on this thread of the graphics or the new interior. Have way better ones but having a terrible loading anything at photobucket.com. Anyone else having problems?? http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...eys6-20126.jpg http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...xs/inlet34.jpg http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/l...inlet61pt2.jpg |
That interior really looks sharp and goes well with the graphics!!!

Thanks...

1st few wks I really wasn't sure I liked it. The silver looked too much like the white and you barely noticed it. First time out in the sun it really popped though. I stood in the water w/a beer just staring at it and really liking what I saw:thankyouthankyou: |
Painting an outboard to match your boat never works out. What you did matching the boat to the motor worked.

I really like that you run the 'rudes...very cool. If mine runs that good I'll be happy....maybe we can hook up for some fun when i'm up and running. My big test will be that first 60 mile run to Freeport. |
Thank You Sir.

My plan from day 1 has been for multiple Rivera Beach to west End runs. The boat/motors are very, very close to being to that level. As I told a friend though, until I can come home from "several" trips on the boat w/zero issues, it ain't there yet. We are talking about doing one of the couple day cruises there and back from Ft.Lauderdale just to see what West End and the area looks like in a month or so. We thought we were going to lose that shot on another level too. The wife found out several mnths ago that they were down sizing her office and it looked very strong like we were being relocated to Cincinnati ! just found out we are here to stay :evilb: We have nick named ourselves, "Yankers". Yankee's trying to be Crackers :thankyouthankyou: |
Twins I wish I could add something constructive to the prop issues but I don't know anything about O/B's :angry-smiley-038: I definitely hope you get those slip numbers in the 9's! She'll be a happy, fast, stable, fairly economical ride! Plus I'm jealous that you are running 71mph in a 24ft'r that has more cockpit room than most 26's haha John aka sprink may never finish that formula. There are a couple liberators near me. I think I should get one, build it, and put it in the water, just to prove it can be done :evilb: Just messin' John.

I just installed fuel flow sensors too. Haven't figured it all out yet but it talks to my GPS. Will read MPG, GPH, range, fuel used etc, etc. Should be quite educational. I am looking forward to seeing if the happy spot in the boat is where I think it is. Will also use it to see what prop, trim, rpm to run for economy. Have had the sensors for a year or more and the boat is just now running good enough to learn anything. Can also use them to ball park motors HP's based on the theory that 10 HP equals 1 GPH @ WFO. i.e., 300 HP's = 30 GPH. |
Those sensors sound pretty trick! Really intrigued to find out how they work and it'll be neat to get a ball park hp figure! :evilb:
I need to learn to be like you and John aka get a boat and keep it hahaha. I'm boatless again for the 3rd time in 2 yrs. :angry-smiley-038: |
