It was a tight fit but this is how you fit a 28' boat in a 26' deep garage. Now let the fun begin!

Here are the mockup engine vents to replace the original. They are contoured to follow the curve of the deck. The originals were to boxy and didn't fit the lines of the boat. I had the frames water jetted out of stainless and will fit perforated stainless material inside them.

Hard to believe it's the same Bertram I saw in the weeds in Harrison Twp Michigan. I found my Magnum in that same grave yard. :drink:

The original 292 engines are going to be used. They only had 170 original hours but have been completly redone. They should be close 275 to 300 hp with the mods that have been done. Not real big numbers but a big improvement above the original 200 hp stock.

h2oboater 02-13-2011 09:26 PM

Great to see that you are using the GMC six's, it had it's own cool sound back in the day on Lake St Clair.

Pantera24 02-13-2011 09:31 PM

Awesome! Especially the 292's...congrats and keep the pics coming. Angel

I'm hoping to use the original type 2 mercruiser "Rock Crusher" outdrives aswell. When I bought the boat I was told they were in perfect shape but after a little inspection they will need some minor work. I bought an extra outdrive to use for spare parts as most of the parts are not produced anymore.

I'm a little undecided about the windshield. I've been playing around with some old school chriscraft brackets but I can't seem to find ones with the correct angle. I looked into having an original style windshield built but for the cost of a new one I think I can come up with something much better with more style. I'm shooting for a mix of the classic chris craft / garwood runabout with sleek mordern styling. All of the deck hardware is going to be flush mount pop-up style.

Looking awesome! I thought about picking this boat up along time ago, it looked like most of everything was still there.

Where you located at?

NICE WORK!

Stormrider 02-14-2011 10:25 AM

Great thread!
Thanks for sharing.

bobo1 02-14-2011 10:40 AM

You are one sick dedicated restorer, the way this is already looking, it will be nicer than new when it was produced! It would be cool if someone bought Sandy Satullos 38 Bertram and restored it back to its glory. Great job....keep it up!

I have all the dimensions for the original windshield but I think I can do something a little better than stock. I do know I'm looking for a shorter than stock height. Its also not bad looking without one but it is nice having a little wind protection.

I'm looking for opinions on what type of paint to use Imron or AwlGrip. Are their pros and cons from one to the other? The paint scheme will be similar to the original but flair at the bow and stern like the old Moppie race boats. I plan on using the same color red or something very similar. I've attached a rough photo shop sketch I made from another Baron picture I took off the web.

A few more interior shots and a picture of my NOS Aqua Meter gauges. I just purchaced an NOS Aqua Meter hour meter and all I need is a matching fuel gauge and I'll have a complete set. If anyone has one or knows of one I would be interested. Thats it for now. Next will be the 3 storage drawers inside of the gunnels and the floor hatch install and hardware.

senzaspectre 02-18-2011 08:31 PM

WOW! You really know what your doing, looks sweet. Love the wheel and cool style seats.

scippy 02-18-2011 11:20 PM

Just a beautiful work of craftmanship.......wonderful restoration!
