They are contoured to follow the curve of the deck. The originals were to boxy and didn't fit the lines of the boat. I had the frames water jetted out of stainless and will fit perforated stainless material inside them. |

They only had 170 original hours but have been completly redone. They should be close 275 to 300 hp with the mods that have been done. Not real big numbers but a big improvement above the original 200 hp stock. |

[I'm a little undecided about the windshield. I've been playing around with some old school chriscraft brackets but I can't seem to find ones with the correct angle. I looked into having an original style windshield built but for the cost of a new one I think I can come up with something much better with more style. I'm shooting for a mix of the classic chris craft / garwood runabout with sleek mordern styling]
Here is the windshield that I remember on the 28' Bertram. |

Kind of a little late but......
The 19' 1970 Monza Marine I'm restoring now has the same (almost) motor vents that your awesome restore has. They may give you an idea. http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/6365/unled1npz.jpg http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/4857/chromeg.jpg |
This weekend I've put the Baron back in the garage for the winter. This will enable me to finish the interior at my leisure and make sure its ready for next summer. I've also removed the trailer this winter so I can prep the bottom for paint. It was more of a job than I thought it would be but its finished. Getting it back on the trailer in the spring should be a treat but I'm hoping I come up with a better system than floor jacks and blocking. Does anybody know of any gloss white paint that can be used on boat bottoms. I looking for a glossy white to match the deck. It currently has a thin layer of dull white paint that is all cracked and chipping and has been there for 30+ years. I can't seem to find a suitable paint in the color white. Any help would be great.

I have heard of some great benefits to applying an epoxy barrier coat (Interlux and others) to the bottom prior to painting. Especially if you plan on leaving the boat in the water for any length of time. If you're going to do the bottom anyway, you may want to consider this. Particularly since you have spared nothing to date to make this restoration perfect. Great job and I have enjoyed reading about it.

Too late now but I would have thought you would have flipped the boat and re-gel coated the bottom before doing work to the deck and hull. I'm not sure any paint will do well below the water line for any length of time. You might put a thread in the Fiberglass forum and see what GlassDave has to say.
Has anyone had experience using Supermarine Revolution SM 1000. It sounds great on their website but I would like to get some real life reviews on it before I go through the hassle of using it and having peel off in a year. All other glossy types of paint don't recommend using below the waterline. |
Look into this.

I have just re-read this thread and i think you are related to houdini! Can't say enough about it. Awesome! "Save the Bertrams" should be in a class of its own!

Art, I had the parts water jetted at a place in Ellsworth, ME. They did a great job and were very reasonable. I paid $115 for the four vents which also included the material and shipping to my house. If your interested I can find the phone number. To bad about your drives. I think I'll be putting to Baron back in the garage so I can finish the interior and paint the bottom. This time I'll have to enclose the entire bow to protect the new paint. My next garage will be 36' deep. Temps are getting too cold to work on it. They are talking about getting some light snow here tonight.

First time looking at the thread, an absolutely great job. Will be back to see the beautiful finished boat!
Congrats! Phil |
amazing work!!

I am very impressed with your wood work. I am building a 28 Maltese. I wanted the old school flavor as well. I used a lot of teak trim, but your Baron's interior is outstanding.

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/4...2109231691.jpg Work has been very slow on the Baron. Who ever said that two children are no more work than one lied to me. Its hard to get anything done with a 7 month old in the house. We just received the parts from the chromers. They did a great job. The only item that couldn't be chromed were the Bertram emblems, so I'll have to purchase some stainless ones to replace them. The missing fuel gauge was also found in Georgia to complete the set of gauges. As a bonus it also came with a matching Hour Meter that was only a few hours over the original gauge. I have been slowly wiring up the stereo that will consist of 4-7" speakers and 2- 10" subs hidden under the rear bench seat. It will all be powered by a 600w 5 channel amp. I'll get some pictures when it's all installed. I have also been trying to get a set of prop hubs machined to allow the old drives to use modern props. The prop shaft is a 17 spline 1-1/8" dia that is next to impossible to find props for. If the hubs can't be made I'll have the shafts turned down to 1" and cut to a 15 spline pattern. My goal is to have it in the water this spring. |
Awesome project. What mods were done to the motors to get more power from them? I know nothing about these older straight six's, and would love to hear some details.

I've started refinishing all the aluminum rub rails and trim. I started by stripping all the old anodizing off the parts. This was done by soaking for 3-4 minutes in a 190 degree bath of 1 part Phosphoric acid to 4 parts water. I was amazed at how quick the coating came off although it was a struggle to soak a 16' long section of rub rail. All the parts have been stripped and now I'm in the middle of polishing everything. After everything is polished I'll apply a coat of Sharkhide clear protectant.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/9...0510490890.jpg This is what I came up with to soak the long lengths of rubrail. It work well except I didn't factor in the temperature of the solution softening the pvc pipe and causeing it to warp and bend. http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/7...0821234949.jpg This is a picture of the rubrail after stripping the anodizing and the finished product all polished up. http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/1...8212938406.jpg Here is a picture of the lower dash switch panel. It was covered with small pits but I was able to sand them out and still retain the engraved switch labels. |
Sweet work. What are you using to polish with?

I have the dash all assembled and installed. I've applied a couple coats of west systems to the wood then followed it up by 8 coat of varnish then compounded and polished to a mirror finish. You can also see the windshield is beginning to be installed but I need to polish the edges before it is finalized. Hopefully I have more pictures to come soon!

Every part of that boat that you've touched so far looks awesome. Quality workmanship is the result of planning, hard work and love. Your boat shows a ton of all of them. Keep up the good work!

Nice work
