'82 Stringer 260 Facelift

4 Attachment(s)
Well winter is here and it's time to rework my '82 Stinger. I tore the cuddy out and found a lot of bad wood stringers and cross members. I couldn't get my camera to work right so there are no before I tore the deck, sink and cabinets out pics of the cuddy. But here are some of what I found and what I've replaced. I'll post more pics as I go. I want to be completely done by Memorial Day weekend. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I will probably have some DIY questions for the more knowledgable then I guys.

Said it before and I'll say it again . . . . loved my 260 Scorp. Cant say it was the best rough water boat, or the best built, or the fastest (or even fast for that matter lol) but she sure was one of the funnest boats i ever had.

CigaretteSam 11-23-2011 03:19 PM

Glad to see that you started a thread! Looking forward to seeing the progress! Good luck =)

I'm with you on the graphics Wannabe. That will be the last thing I do is the externals. But I agree they have to go...

Finished all the cross members in the cuddy. I'm going to make the porta-potty space bigger by adding a bulkhead alittle further to the rear of the one I cut out. And possibly a short wall that will extend across the benches and up the sides to just below the portholes. Not sure about that yet. Here are a couple pics of the crossmember replacement. Still need to glass them back in.
Thank you CigeretteSam for the lead on the cuddy door and hatch. I'm trying to get in touch with the owner at this time. He may also be on vacation for Thanksgiving.

Man I hate fiberglass work!!!

jeff32 12-02-2011 06:07 AM

been there, done that on a 84 stinger... But I took the deck off the boat so it was easier!

InstaGator 12-04-2011 06:46 PM

I wish I had a place to do that. I'm doing it all on the trailer in my front driveway. At least it doesn't get that cold here in Fla.

couple tricks of the trade if you dont already know them. When you bundle up with sweatshirts or whatever to grind, tape your sleves and dump a bunch of talcum baby powder down your arms and back. This helps to keep it from getting to your skin. If it does make it in and your itching when your done take a straight cold shower from start fo finish, do not add any hot water for the duration (actually not as bad as ya think). This actually works pretty well if ya can stand the cold. I go through cases of tyvek suites and talc, another thing i like to use for heavy all day grinding sessions are those two piece rain suites you can get at Meijers or Walmart. Fun stuff . . . . :drink:

InstaGator 12-08-2011 06:17 PM

Thanks Dave that info got to me in time for the next grinding session this Saturday. I'm trying to get work accomplished so a I can have minimal grinding sessions. I bought a work jumpsuit I will duct tape it up real good. Thanks again...

Sam Once again thanks for the assistance finding a cuddy door. Still needing the upper hatch closure. Please keep an eye out for it. Are there any parts that you are or will be looking for? If so let me know I'm all over the place looking for thing that I will need. I have a couple of stock Quicksilver throttle setups, If I remember yours was damaged and all apart.

Facelift

Hey folks, I apologize for my extended absence and lack of updates to my 260 Facelift thread. Anyway I'm got things taken care of and am back to my Operation 260 Facelift project. I still plan on having her back in the water for Memorial Day weekend at Silver Glen, Fla. Here are a couple pics of the cuddy going back together. What isn't visible is the conduit I ran under the deaking to pull the electrical & speaker wiring. I will post more pics as the completion of the cuddy progresses.

InstaGator 04-05-2012 04:35 PM

Wonder where the outdrive pics went?

CigaretteSam 04-05-2012 07:03 PM

Looking good!

Here's what was inside the outdrive. Can you say replace U-joints, yoke, shift cable and boot and all associated o-,rings and seals. YEE-HAW... Do you think it got alittle wet?

CigaretteSam 04-08-2012 08:32 AM

Is that an Alpha? If so, I have one that I can sell or swap. It may have the parts you need.

InstaGator 04-11-2012 08:31 AM

No it's a Bravo. Already pulled and being rebuilt top to bottom. Don't want any problems on the river Memorial Day weekend.

Here are a few more cuddy updates

InstaGator 04-11-2012 09:07 AM

I guess I have to leave the old graphics on the sides. I don't have the money to repaint the hull for this season so the lettering lives another season. I was told that the shadowing from the lettering will be visible no matter how much wet sanding and buffing I do. So they stay, unless everyone on here kicks a few bucks my way for new paint.:eekdrop:

InstaGator 04-11-2012 06:48 PM

Just spent the day wet sanding and buffing my a$$ off. I pulled a small section of the graphics off and couldn't get the shadow underneath to go away. So I wet sanded the entire hull and buffed, buffed and buffed some more. Buffers get heavy after a couple hours of holding the up and out... Just saying!!!

rsparso 04-12-2012 06:32 PM

But think; you could be paying big $$ to get that kind of workout in a gym :)

Well I got a little more done today. Front speakers are in and I installed a 6 outlet gadget charging bank. Really glad I ran a 1" wire chase down each side under the decking. I've ran all the speaker wires and 12 volt wiring in the chases. All wires are protected and it'll be easy to pull any other wires I may need in the future. Still waiting on the material to finish the sides and ceiling. There will be red trim boards along the top fore and aft of the hatch and along the sides to hide the in-direct L.E.D. lighting. More pics coming. Headliner is holding me up right now. All the red trim boards are done and waiting their turn to be installed. Also the door is complete, double bi-folds they will go on last as not to tear them up with all the going in and out of the cuddy.

Meara_Image 04-17-2012 07:45 PM

Your an animal:wizard:
my pics coming soon as requested...my dudes that take all the pics for my shop are so artcy fartcy that there puttin a photobook thing together and they want it to be just right....it should be good!
Fun day tomrrow! i have a crane coming to lift the boat so we can pull the trailer and redo that.
Carpet looks very clean..nice install!

Thanks Meara looking foward to seeing your photo album. My boat is on jacks it wouldn't fit in the bay on the trailer. I'll be cleaning up the trailer soon. Not much to do there its aluminum, not painted, (I took it off the red trailer it's on in my avatar). I want to add L.E.D. lights down the sides and L.E.D. taillights too.

jeff32 04-17-2012 09:14 PM

keep up the hard work!

I just did that this weekend. LED lights on the sides and taillights. Took a whole day but it was worth it.

Your Chris Craft is looking good!

InstaGator 04-18-2012 08:07 PM

Well today I managed to get the 850 watt 5 channel amp, 10" sub and new 6.5" rear speakers installed. Can't mount the amp until the headliner material arrives, but all the wires are run, connected and ready to secure to the bulkhead once the headliner is done.

The headliner, lights, amp and speakers are all installed. Fixing to close out the cuddy for the season. Ready to rock and roll on Memorial Weekend. Can't wait...

Powerquest_Baby!! 04-24-2012 05:46 PM

Looking good!! I just finished a 3 amp, 14 speaker install last night (24 hours total time over 3 different days). Its nice knowing that a part of your boat is "done". I still need to work on a buff and wax plus changing my fluids but Im getting there....Hard to believe Memorial Day is only about 1 month away!

I hear you PowerQuest, I glad mine is coming back together rather quickly. I did have alot of things done and waiting their turn to be installed. The interior is light grey bulkheads & ceiling and dark grey decking & floor. In the center the burgandy color trim board is hiding indirect white lighting and the side boards will match the center with red L.E.D. indirect lighting behind them. Still have to finish the double bi-fold doors and door hatch. They're done just waiting till I back out into the cockpit, so they don't get tore up. The stereo, amp and speakers are all installed and sounds amazing. 850W Precsion Power, 5 channel amp feeding (4) 6.5" MTX Thunder Marine speakers and a 10" MTX Thunder Marine sub wolfer and a Jensen head unit w/CD and remote. Bad @$$ system for only $350.00...
