1986 Avanti

hey guys, new guy on here but pretty much been on a boat since I was born.

looking at a 1986 Avanti 22 with a 350 and a alpha outdrive. My uncle owned the boat previously and then sold it to another guy here in ny. Now its for sale agian, and would like to buy it back.

Any history on these boats, whats to look out for on an older boat like this. it has around 420hrs on it. New outdrive, new interior, and roller traler. only problem is the pump/resivor for the hydrulic tabs is cracked

Clustergear 01-24-2012 09:32 PM

I had a 83 27' Avanti for 25 years they were heavy and built like a tank, not much can go wrong with the hull and deck. If your tabs are Bennett the plastic tanks list for $20 they always leak at top of seam. They leak so often we keep four in stock. I am sure you will be happy with an Avanti they may be a little heavy, but have a real nice ride when the water kicks up. Search around here and at one of the other Offshore sites there are some discussions all about Avanti's

TeamSaris 01-24-2012 09:50 PM

Yellow and white? I know the boat very well

scarab63 01-25-2012 04:50 AM

Nice affordable avanti on c.l. Boston. Its been for sale for a bit, so u might be able to get it right.
Think its a bbc / trs $5g

TripleG 01-27-2012 06:01 PM

well i went and put a down payment on the boat, after talking with my uncle this boat is still solid, only problem is the pump/resivor for the trim tabs fell off the back of the transom, and cracked, not sure if I can just get just the resivor or have to buy the whole pump assembly. Also has anyone converted a roller trailer to a bunk style

TripleG 01-27-2012 06:02 PM

You are a non-paying bottom feeder...like me ;)

I love those boats, not real fast, but really well built and can take a beating for sure!

You can post links to external sites if the*pictures are hosted elsewhere.

tripleg shoot me a PM, you can email the pics to me and I'll put them up.

TripleG 01-28-2012 09:02 AM

Hey man I sent you a pm, and brivander yea the hull on this boat is great in the rough stuff, I've been in it up at the st. Lawrence river it's absolutely awesome,

machloosy 01-28-2012 09:59 AM

Never got it tripleg

KEVLARKAT32 01-28-2012 10:22 AM

Not picking one anybody but I have to chime in . I worked in the 80's for Dennis @ Jet-set marine who made the Avanti . Back in the early 80's there wasnt much out there in a way of these boats unlike today , that said I know first hand as having a hand building these boats and owning 2 - 27 ft they are one of the worst lay-up I have ever seen , wavy , delamanation issues , old munster looking deck . I know for a fact we tried to warn Dennis but he wanted to hear nothing and guess what theyre long gone . They really got bad fron 1986 on as some of his best guy's moved on .

Go ahead beat me up but the last 1996 27 ft Avanti I owned the inner cockpit liner rubbed through the bottom and always leaked as well as a 4 ft crack on the keel from the transom forward . I bought as a beater and unloaded it after a month when I discoverd the engine stringers stopped @ the fuel tank bulkhead and they were just tabbed together . For those who dont know how to build boats , the engine stringer cannot be 4 ft long and tabbed together @ fuel tank bulkhead on new const , they need to go forward

Larry

OK,, I chime in also. Don't know much about the smaller Avanti's but I had two 33 footers. Both been driven in some serious seas. I met Dennis and YESSS he is a bastard and an a$$shole, but the 33 layups were still followed the original Banana boat layup schedule. I also know a few others who have Avanti's and there is no real issues with the hull. Dennis had some rigging issues and details, but I think the hulls (at least the 33's) were built solid. My current boat have no stress cracks anywhere and I been in a bunch of rough seas in the past few years. But it wasn't rigged by Dennis, so I have no issues with the rigging and misc. details either. Plus the hull I got, Dennis made it for his son, with some better quaility control. His son ended up with a CC. I ended up with the hull rigged by Lightning Bay, with all new "stuff". (IE motors, drive, gauges, etc.) so I'm happy with the whole set up.
That being said, it's like pretty much any others, some are ok, some are lemons. Donzi, Fountain, Baja, etc. all have some that are just fallng apart.

TripleG 01-28-2012 02:39 PM

He had the outdrive replaced last fall, so I'm thinking there's a year and a half left on the warranty, I will ask him tho, is there issues with these drives, I would really like to put a bravo one this boat in time, any chance the bolt holes will line up

KEVLARKAT32 01-28-2012 02:41 PM

My buddy Ken Borreli made the deck plug and mold for the 33 . He owns Nuwave marine in NJ Nice boat ( 33 ) but very heavy

KEVLARKAT32 01-28-2012 02:43 PM

It will just drill two holes .

Yup it will, but don't get rid of the SEI until the warranty is out their replacement policy is great With that power it should be fine (assuming it's the 350/260) unless you are real hard on it...

Well, say hey. to your buddy Ken.
Actually compared to any other true 33' boat the Avanti is around the middle in weight. For sure not a light weight, and not the fastest hulls around, but when it comes to some rough water, I'm happy with the performance. Countless times during my Poker runs, some boats in the same size, (no names. lol) couldn't keep up even thought they were actually faster in smooth seas.

TeamSaris 01-28-2012 04:08 PM

Ours has had no issues, 1985

TripleG 01-28-2012 05:22 PM

o man fast fun 2, thats sweet, is that the same hull as mine? Only reason I ask is you have one bow hatch not sure if its narrower?

what were you running for power/outdrive, mine is just a stock 350,

I would like to go back to the original interior with the bolsters with the angled bracket off the back of them like you have on yours.

Also how much of a project is it to add the 2 front fog lights like you have in the front

Got any more pics?

We had to put a spacer in ours, any higher it would blow out.

SFOcean 01-29-2012 12:27 AM

No issues on this 22' 1988 hull.

TripleG 01-29-2012 02:26 AM

Well I guess I'm going to have to brush up on my termanoligy. Where are you guys running these boats, biggest water I've been in is the st Lawrence river near Alex bay and surrounding areas

golfmaxgolf 01-29-2012 07:28 AM

Just a Thought

Should you upgrade to a bravo might as well throw some used k-planes at it @ the same time. Rich

Yea the river is deffiantly going to be a regular stop this summer, you go up to lake of the isles, heard piction is a good time nvr been there tho

machloosy 01-30-2012 07:46 AM

TripleG, don't do anything to the boat! I can't tell from this thread if you own it or are just looking at it, but it sounds like this/will be your first boat. Get used to it with the 350sbc and alpha combo before you do anything. No need for big power, bravo, k-planes, etc yet. Just my $.02 and I was there not too long ago. Search the young owners thread I started and get an idea of what other people started with. A 22 Avanti is a REAL good start.

yea i put a down payment on it so once it comes out of storage and i hear run and drive it, its as good as mine, proably just going to leave it alone for a while and just enjoy it. I've grown up on a boat, and used my dad's 96 21ft chapparal with 350 and alpha pretty much every weekend these past 2 summers. But I hear what your saying, and yes i didnt think would be a bad start for being 21
