I'd say that both the Checkmate and the Sunsation are fair deals at 12 to 13.
I'd bet with some searching you can find a cleaner Baja, probably perhaps newer with less hours in the same 12 to 13 range.
Not trying to push Baja's on you but during my search I kept coming back to this Mfg because of the affordabilty and the base of ownership. They just seem to be a popular brand with a great following of owners, I'm still a bit confused as to why they're perceived as as stepchildren in the boating community.
After all, children are all children and boats are all boats. Parenting and boat ownership go hand in hand in determining how good a 18 to 21 year old is.
Just my .02
Good luck in your search, I'm certain you'll come up with an awesome boat.
See ya,
Kelly

reason is Bajas are the camaro/mustang of the boat world. Great car, good bang for your buck, but are not quite a corvette, bmw, mercedes, etc. I think a lot of the yuppies or people that really do have money to afford the big boys look down on that.

Your right. I looked at bajas heavily before I bought my fountain, i think they are the best bang for your buck boat out there and will get people and the OP what he wanted. The reason I didnt go Baja is i couldnt find one with a descent color scheme, to many of them have that carnival cruise theme going on with yellows, pink and purples. Ultimately I got a fountain which is a 91, for the price I probably could have gotten a Baja that was 5-7 years newer.

The Baja was 2 years newer, had much better power and salon amenities, plus Mfg history as their 96 Factory Poker Run boat for the northern states poker runs that year at the same purchase price, she was even on the cover of powerboating magazine with a little article on the buildout and rigging.
In spite of the circus like color schemes it was a no brainer.
What I've found is that Baja trashing is more Internet oriented than in person out on the water.
Thanks for your reply.

Kelly

I have nothing against a baja, except that it seems everyone has one. I've heard the same baja bashing on the internet, but I think some people just like to bash....usually those that spent a ton of money on a boat and want to look down upon the guy who didn't. Personally, it's not that I wouldn't buy a baja...it's that I'd prefer something that's a little different from a more popular mass produced boat. I will agree I've seen many with the ugly color scheme...which I shy away from also.
That boat in Philly certainly sounds too good to be true...I'm betting there is another number in front of that 6, and curiously there is no phone number listed. Might be a scam.
Called the guy about the sunsation. Sounds like it's in good shape, so I'm going to try to take a look this week.

the Baja in Philly is $6000. person in military has to go to afghanistan on April 17th. says the boat is perfect 238 hours all told. it is always possible it is a scam, next they want you to send a check because they hafta leave tomorrow...but i think it is worth looking into.

Sounds too scammish to me, and I'm not close enough to look before sending my check off to a distant land. Next, I'll probably have won $11,000,000 in Europe and all I need to do is send them a $5,000 processing fee.

Always a hard call....The boat was only worth $13k to $13500 IMO BUT do you miss out on a good boat over $500? Obviously you have to draw the line someplace...

He really wanted 14K, and I offered 13.5K. Just so happens he had gotten a call that day that a guy wanted to look at it. If the guy didn't buy it, it would have been mine for 13.5. He offered 14, and I had the opportunity to go above, but decided for a '91 with 565 hours...even though in great shape, I didn't want to. Well...actually, I talked myself out of it for about 3 hours...trying to stall long enough it wouldn't be available and he'd tell the other guy it was his. Then I called back and asked if he had an agreement with that guy...because i might go above 14. He did, so no boat for me. I hate and love boat shopping at the same time.
