Bringing some life back to a old 10 meter :D

Picked this boat up a month or so ago, 1984 33 10 meter fountain, decided to toss the big motors we had for the 32 into this one. Of course it was in need of a repaint, not sure what the previous owners were after, but def not my style LOL. So that was first. Have it at my buddies shop where my father, a friend, myself will be doing all the prep, body and paint work. On a side note the boat has been to have the bottom blue printed, converted to B1's with raised X's, new transom, stringers. Cabin has been gutted, just a set of seats down below. Looking at it now with the B'1s on it they could have got away with a full staggered set up( would have been tuff) None the less still hoping to run around 100 or so with our 750's. Going to do the boat in ALL WHITE. I love all white boats, they just look clean, mean. Not to mention we do not have a ton to toss into a wild paint scheme.. On to the pics. It would seem, the last people who painted the boat, rushed the prep. A ton of paint pops, that actually started under the primer and all. Thought it might have been from sitting in water, but the bottom is fine, these seem to be all over, esp on the right side. Managed to get both sides sanded by my self in about 3 hours. Gona take the rub rail off tom, take care of that area, then pull the gimbals and K planes ect off. Will do my best to keep this updated. Hope we can bring her back, run the hell out of it :evilb: Thanks for looking. :drink:

Out back of the house, power washing the bilge, getting the assemblies ready to come out.

WOW, what ugly paint, looks better even with the tiny bit I sanded in the first pic. hahaha

And the other

Now a look at the issues that were hardly noticeable before sanding. Again a bit all over the boat.

Those little round spots could have been water or oil in the air line when they applied the first or second coat of primer, what was tiny little specs leached outward and caused what you have there. Sand them back as far as you can, you can never trust anything to cover them up.

Fenderjack 06-12-2012 08:39 PM

That was something that certainly could have been possible, crossed my mind. A fish eye that never fish eyed. hahah. I was thinking also that it was just dirty, they did not wipe the hull down very well before paint. My fingers are crossed, hope we can turn out a NICE finish. But this is also not our first rodeo, LOL

Thanks
John

Great start to a thread! Looking forward to seeing the finished boat, and don't forget to update the thread!

Seriously watching this thread!

Fenderjack 06-13-2012 06:41 PM

Well got a little bit further today. Managed to get the rub rails off( a pita I mite add, tons of through bolts) haha, any way, cool thing I noticed is that this boat has had the deck and hull bonded together) Not sure if they all had it done, havn't looked to see if my 32 is like that, or really paid any mind to any other ones. But if it has been done, this boat was built to have the **** ran out of it:evilb: Tom I will hopefully be able to get started on getting the assemblies off. They are stuck on there pretty good. Any tips to getting SOB's off other then a BF rubber hammer? Also my buddy snatched this pic. Possible my favorite shirt ever. :lolhit:

What paint will you go with? I would personally go with Awlgrip. Doesnt fade for years and has a brilliant shine.

scippy 06-13-2012 10:57 PM

The pix show a really nice job of how they glassed the hull & deck...Bullet proofing is a necessity for a wave crusher!..Are you going to keep it old skool (paint) colors?..........keep up the great work!

Fenderjack 06-13-2012 11:29 PM

I think I have decided on going with awl craft( same as awlgrip) but my buddy( where the boat is at) that has done ALOT of boats says that the craft is easier to spray, both made by the same folks. I have seen boats that he has done with the craft, in years past that still shine awesome. was going to go with PPG concept or possibly Imron, but I think ima go with the awlcraft. Thanks. It does seem that anywhere I looked the bonding seemed to be really good, neat. I am happy esp since the boat is a almost as old as me LOL. As for colors, going to go ALL WHITE, Going to do the vents in the blue they are, as it matches the interior accents. Thanks all, again I will keep the thread posted as good as I can on this. I love the lines on our 32 but this has THE LINES I like :drink: Not gona try to set any records, but hope to surprise a few people :D

They all have the hull to deck joint bonded like that. On the ones with the integrated transom, I don't think the transom is bonded like that, but the rest of the boat is. Can't get to that part of the transom once it's installed.

Only problem I've heard of on Fountain hulls is the center stringer getting wet. My fiberglass guy has done a few of them, and I've been really careful to keep my hull dry accordingly. The problem is that it's in the center, and that's where the water sits when it gets in the hull. The rest of the hull is strong enough that you could totally remove that stringer and never have a problem with 90% of what the boat would ever see, or with anything that 90% of the boats will ever see.

Fenderjack 06-14-2012 06:34 AM

OK thats good to know. What part are you saying has been done on this that couldn't be done after something is installed again? The stringers have been redone, along with the new transom. There is a small soft spot on the lower bulk head at the front of the engine compartment, but I do not think it will ever cause a issue, not something we are going to tear into at this point. Would like to get a season out of the boat first, keep a eye on it. Rest of the boat is SOLID for sure. Thanks for the info :D

It's hard to hate on a fountain when you see that level of build quality. I've always had a thing for the 10m despite its beak :evilb:

Good luck with her. She certainly is worthy of the restore! Isn't it fun working on boats older than you? I'm waiting to own a boat that isn't :lolhit:

The old 10 meters rock.

Fenderjack 06-14-2012 08:55 PM

Ok got all the holes grinded out. What a pita this was. LOL but it is done. Going to fill them with glass tom, sand it out. Also was able to get all the culk removed from where the rub rail was. Yet another tedious task.

I was wondering, the pictures of the inside of the boat showed some yellow colored areas, is that what kevlar looks like? If it is that might explain the pock marks on your hull. That stuff is real porus and might have left some air bubbles under the gel coat.
Just a thought.

Well that's what made me ask the question (did fountain ever put out a kevlar 10 meter).I have seen this same problem on Uniflite boats in the 80's that were made out of kevlar.I find it hard to believe it was from shrink wrap or contaminated surface when painted. because the bubbles went all the way down thru the paint primer and gel coat. What ever the problem we will fix it right and move on.That's what makes this project interesting. ....but the holes are in the Gel Y/N? So would that not have something to do with the prep or spraying of the Gelcoat before layup of the cloth? Only asking - not assuming to know or say anything contrary to what has been posted.

Looks like a lot of repair work but if you do her up properly, you can run her without looking back....

Fist look at the pics, I had a lot of Cheney one-liners come to mind......

Yes down in the gel JOHN SR

1965 thunderbird 06-15-2012 11:28 PM

I bet what happened was moisture got between the kevlar and the gel coat and when the temps got down to freezing it popped up the bubbles that you are seeing. Probably pin holes in the gel coat or the kevlar.
Beautiful boat , definitely worth fixing!!!

Well got the holes epoxied over yesterday. Heading down in a bit to sand them smooth, hit them with one more coat of epoxy to make sure they are back smooth with the sides. Hoping to have the sides primererd by early week. Going to use keystone 3 in 1. Have had great results with it, a ton of guys seem to love the stuff. Also using WEST SYSTEMS SIX 10 to fill the holes. This stuff works really well, is easy to use.

Sweet ride!! Can't wait to see it done! I agree with you I also like the older boats with sharp lines and angles. Not a fan of most new boats with all the curves now, there just don't look as mean and powerful.

Fenderjack 06-17-2012 10:54 AM

Thanks man. Headed over now to get a little more done on it.The little holes actually look deeper than the really are.Mainly looks like that from the different layers of paint and primers. Hope to get some primer on it this week.

i think this boat was from md owned new by a car guy with good size power then sold to a local builder that put i think 1000 and # 5s then bout was a trade in on a cat minus drives and power they converted boat to a bravo boat and 500hp and sold local then not sure where it went after that boat was a nice boat

You are correct. That is the same history I got on it, yes I am in MD, boat was from here. The name of the boat use to be ''FAST COMPANY", guy offed this, for a skater if I recall. It is nice to know that the story is legit. I was told the boat ran in the 80's with the bravo's and the 500's. I believe the bottom, transom, stringers were redone at Lilly's but not positive but the bottom and stringers were done.

Well got a little more done today. Managed to get the stress cracks sanded and V'd out. It stressed rite at the front bulkhead. Going to mix up some epoxy, mix a little matting in with it, fill in the area. Hopefully it stays put and doesn't crack again. Headed to get some primer in the am, possibly give er a coat by the end of the week.

Looking good man!!!

Ask your Dad about "Marine Tek"...we used to use it for jobs like this "Back in the Day". I guess SIX 10 replaces that as the do all for this kind of job. I haven't used it yet but I hear that it's the $hit for a job like this.

John,jr...one thing about you and your Dad...you guys aren't sitting on the side lines watching...you're in the game!!:evilb:

Fenderjack 06-25-2012 12:03 AM

Hey thanks. We are trying are best LOL. We could have had the other fountain going but, this boat is neater IMO, has some history in our area. Will have to post pics up tom. Got the cracks all filled, now just have to block them out smooth again with the hull sides. Debating now if we are just going to paint the complete boat. Once that is finished it is basically ready to drop the power in. I have heard of the marine tek you speak of. My dad saw this six 10 advertised in a boating mag, decided to give it a shot. It is what was used to do the transom in my 202 stinger, had great results with it. Super strong, sands fairly easy.

John jr

Fenderjack 06-28-2012 11:24 PM

Well not in primer yet, decided to smooth 2 more holes in the side of the boat. Also a look inside. Damn this boat is laid up light LOL. It's solid in the rites spots, were still thinking it's kevlar ;) Added some matting inside after I cleaned it up. Should be all ready to go by tom eve. Also mixed up some west system, micro bubbles/filler, got it rite where it needs to be, then a tiny skim coat of of mud/primer, then block out with the rest of the hull. :D Should have the plugs glass in and filled tom also..Slow but sure. hahah

Yeah.... same guy

my Fountain is laid up the same. . . . Top and bottom are glassed together, but not as pretty. I've got a 27ft, and after the recent poker run that was a little over 100 miles, . . . . I'm wanting something a little bigger

sonicss42 06-29-2012 10:22 PM

Two brothers owned it in the early 90's. They were home builders and part time racers. Used to go on Full Tilt Marine rally's with us back in the day. Will see if I can find old pics. If you need their names I think I can get them foe you.
