Now that we are back to normal.
Would love to have 2 of them for the race boat. Maybe we can make a trade. I have this race boat ... |
That Gentry fellow liked the custom gizmos. Wild innovative hardware. Not a Mercury Racing decal in sight.

Shaun!!!You need to talk to MELL RIGGS at RIGGS marine in Eldorado Wisconsin(920) 872-2728He used to be in with Merc back in the day. He is a book of knowledge.May be able to shed some light on you find!!.I would be interested in one of those turbo small blocks.JOHN SR

Tombone any idea what the red gear looking things are with the yokes? The black outboard deals are the surface drives we believe, the red gear/yoke look to us like some kind of a transmission, there is a Sh*t load of those, and the black surface drives there are 80 we've counted as far as you can see into the container.

unbelievable find!!!!!!!!!!! that is just incredible. i wish i could see it in person. that stuff is priceless to the right person. would love to see more pics. congrats!

|
Incredible!

They look to be a style of crash box with a power takeoff to run the hydraulic pumps for steering trim ect. JOHN SR

I thought they looked similar to TRS transmissions...I have never been around crash boxes. You guys know better than me. |
You might make more money by charging admission for OSO members to just rummage through the containers and not sell a damn thing.

Holy crap this is an amazing find! I too would love to spend a day crawling around inside those boxes!
With that said, the value of this inventory could be all over the map. Sadly, much of this old stock is antiquated by todays standards. Sure there are plenty of folks that could use this stuff, but my guess is unless you find a true collector or someone looking for historically accurate items, I don't think most of this inventory would bring premium money. Unlike classic cars, there isn't a overwhelmingly strong market for historic items in the boating industry. I agree Carson Brummett would be someone you should definitely talk with, assuming there's a decent amount of turbo gear... which IMO would be the most interesting since Gentry really was a pioneer in marine turbo charging. With that said, I might be interested in some BBC turbo manifolds, intakes, water cooled turbo housings, etc. if this stuff trickles out in the market place for reasonable money. BTW, thank you so much for sharing this find! |
Shaun, Thank you for taking the time to show us all of this!!!!!!!! It is an increasable find. I was in KW when the crash happened, a huge loss that day…………..Those engines would be great in a CanAm car too. Please keep sharing and don’t worry about the doubters. I believe ya’. Please keep posting pics for us not on facebook. Thank you, Bill Jolley

Those are crash boxes ---No shifting - in gear until you shut the motors off!!!!! And as Far as Antiquated, Anything that makes 1200 hp is not antiquated by any ones standard! When Gentry was racing the alum. cat he he had 4800 hp on tap divided by four engines = 1200 H.P. each..... Even if the engines don't have the cubic inches the new ones have they still made Gorrila Horse Power....Still they are very exotic even in today's standards , getting the bugs out might be a big task
Its like uncovering Offshore King Tut's Tomb . Jim |
Welcome to OSO - To confirm you ARE NOT Jim Darr or Chris Sunkin please present a photo ID, copy of your social security card, documented proof of a boat with at least 1200 horsepower and your offshore boat history resume. You can speed up the OSO pre-qualification process with documented history of a boat that exceeds 100MPH and 1500HP as well as pictures of yourself with either Reggie Fountain or Don Aranow. If none of this is provided we will assume you are Jim Darr or Chris Sunkin untill you've exceeded 1000 posts. Happy boating!
What have we become?! Heck, Obama had less than that and he's president. We run a tight ship around here! (no pun intended) |
Being a car guy and in the vintage auto restoration biz in a past life i am absolutely fascinated by "car in the barn stories" but being a boat guy this is off the chart cool. I understand if you are not at liberty to divulge but . . . . . how the heck did you come upon something like this?
just way cool and cant wait to see more pics. on my own here locally i un earthed one of 37 1904 Buicks, found it in a barn a mile from my shop when i went to look at a 36 Chrysler for a customer. Also found one of one Aston Martin Ghia Supersonics behind a Donzi Marine dealer i did work for. It was siting in the weeds like any other old car. Had the car at my shop for over a year before it was sold to its current owner and the gentleman who restored it. http://www.autoweek.com/article/2013...WS01/131029944) http://www.rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?lot_id=1059964 |
AWESOME FIND, Tom Gentry is LEGENDARY in our sport. His equipment was light years ahead of it's time. I would love to have one of the raw turbo housing with his logo on it just for a paper weight....seriously.
|
Shaun.....Sammy James, Richie Powers and John Conners were very involved with Tom Gentry over various periods of his racing.
I am sure that they could go through the containers with you and create an inventory of what is there and also give you an idea of what would be of interest to today's boaters and what is just antique junk. Great find and thanks for trying to keep the goods from falling into hands that would just toss them out. |
Think the crash boxes with the pto drive were made by Carl Kiekhaefer
|
Back to Keith Atlanta post. We also need at least 3 Credit card numbers front and back
|
cool find! post more pics!
|
Extremely cool find!
I am interested to see everything that is there. As some have said already there are many items that could be of value both in restorations and new builds. I also agree with that some of it will be antiquated and not worth much. That said, anything with Gentry or the like stamped or printed on it holds a certain value to us boat freaks that would just display it for its cool factor. |

We do on the big blocks :) Looks like Merc Marine all did the ECU's for the FI motors. I've spoken to a guy today who works for Merc and he confirmed they did all of the engine ECU custom work for Tom. I'll get some photos of that tomorrow when we tear down one of the fuel injected/twin turbo big blocks.
shaun Picture of Chief Engine......I believe that is originally Gentry hardware. |

If you've seen any of the stuff I've personally restored (cars), you'll know I spend HUGE effort in 1) doing it right 2) document it 3) doing it period correct. You have to, to be able to run in events like the Monterey Historics which I have with my Impala. I would *love* for someone to get this stuff who is restoring one of Toms old boats. shaun |

Orionbbs, awesome thread! |
Wow!!
So how does the gentry surface drives compare to a kaama? There are many guys out there still running kaamas on vintage 80's formulas and scarabs and even some of us (me) looking to convert to kaamas from TRS's. The parts for kaamas are harder and harder to find but if you can put your hands on a pair of gentrys and maybe another pair for spare parts it might just be an alternative to a kaama setup? Shawn - can you post some more pictures of the surface drives? Would love to see if they are trimable/steerable? Awesome find!! |

Just fyi, unless the person keeps using the same IP address, checking IP addresses doesn't do any good because you can re-generate them pretty easily. That is how darr got around it.
