Tom Gentry 5 cargo containers full of new stuff

Please don't remove this as a classified ad. I am posting this here to find out more info and to let people know about this. I wouldn't even know where to begin to post this into the classified section as its so huge and I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what we've got or how to value it. I'm a vintage car guy, I restore and race historic sports cars and I literally know nothing about boat racing.

We have 5 cargo containers full of Tom Gentry (Gentry Eagle, from 1991-1992 as far as I can tell) race operation stuff including complete brand new engines 20+ of them (BBC and SBC, twin turbo, fuel injected and carb), race surface drives (about 80 of these), turbo housings you name it. Basically a complete set of spares for a race season I'm told. Tom fabbed his own blocks, intakes and turbo housings they have his named stamped into everything. These cargo containers were given to my friend by Tom's widow when he passed away in 1994 and have not been opened since. My friend is getting older now and doesn't want any of it. Everything is still in their original crates.

We are in the process of cataloging everything as we speak. I have no idea where to begin or who to contact to try to even set a value on any of this. Any help is much appreciated. The containers are in Northern California, they came from Florida and were shipped out by his wife.

This is the boat many of these motors were built for https://plus.google.com/photos/11047...993?banner=pwa

Here is a photo of one of the big blocks still in its crate, more photos to come

Thanks guys for any help.

that's the question, what WOULD you give to get inside them?

c_deezy 01-11-2014 10:51 PM

Wow, that is an incredible stash of parts from the sounds of it. Would love to see more pictures as the stuff is unpacked.

f_inscreenname 01-11-2014 11:11 PM

You are going to have to inventory what you have and price each piece or just come up with a price for the lot but I would think you would be better off selling piece by piece or "package deals".

cigboat1 01-11-2014 11:15 PM

I will take two of the crated unopened motors , shoot me a price ! Jim :eekdrop:

tomtbone1993 01-11-2014 11:43 PM

You got to be F'in kidding me......not opened since 94? that's like finding berried offshore boat treasure....

i dont know about the rest of you guys but i find it hard to believe that thousands of dollars worth of parts, enough to fill 5 shipping containers has been untouched for 20 years.80 surface drives for a race team,ya if they have 40 boats, lol.

4 engines 4 drives per boat. Amount of engines does not surprise me. The back of the trailer says "Gentry Surface Drives" if he was also selling drives the 80 amount would not surprise me. My biggest problem is I was a junior in high school when this was packed up. Need to say I was chasing something else in that era and it was not offshore boats...:) also facebook link looks pretty legit...

I am currently talking to "orionbbs" on face book and it is NOT Darr, you can see his profile on face book and you can tell by just viewing it it's not a fake person.

It appears you have a bunch of 20 year old boat racing items. It also appears you have one off custom items. This thread really belongs in the general discussion forum. I don't think anybody is concerned about it being a classified ad....unless you are looking for a lump sum payment to not have to pull, then inventory and sell it. I don't know if you have 150K worth of parts or 1.5 million....it does make it cool seeing this thread on a Saturday night instead of doing something cool like chasing tail...or running up a bar tab someplace...:)

Thanks Tombone.. I'm not this Darr dude, whoever the heck that is :) You can see more about my Impala by the way at http://NASCARImpala.com including interviews of me. Was a fun project I did where we restored the car in 30 days for Monterey Historics.

My most recent project, kind of a crap deal a Mustang I bought as a Fastback that turned out to be a Notchback, we are going crazy on as a track day car/resto mod. try to turn lemons into lemonade http://www.stangtv.com/features/car-...tang-fastback/

Anyways... any info on the boat stuff is appreciated. I'll post more photos as soon as I have them.

thanks

Yeah it was crazy working 18 hour days. The Impalas up at the Lamay museum in WA right now in their NASCAR exhibit until May when I'll start racing her again this summer.

Funny that guys doing kind of what we are doing with the Mustang. We are tube framing it all using basically a modern day NASCAR front clip and frame rails. Oh and we are widening the car 18"'s heh pretty crazy stuff.

(BTW tried to send you this in private message but it says you've exceeded your quota, anyways don't care if people have my cell number anyways)..

Cool! I'm about 5mins from Stevens Creek Blvd. give me a call when your in town. I only keep 1 race car usually at the house. Right now its one of my IMSA GTO Buicks. The Impala comes back in May so if your around then I can show you her. The Mustang should be done in March at least thats when we've committed to the magazine to finish her up. Then it'll be my daily driver, I'm crazy like that heh

Not everyone is Darr. I don't think he is bright enough to come up with a find like this. You would be surprised what people find that has been untouched for decades now and days. I can't wait to see everything you have. Keep the picks coming Shaun.

Can you send me a link to those? Sounds interesting.

TomFTM 01-12-2014 08:43 AM

Call Carson Brummett in California he had bought the rights to all the gentry stuff. Don't have his number of hand ..

gbochis 01-12-2014 09:17 AM

Shaun-
I think what you have in the containers is the inventory from Gentry Turbo Marine. Much like Betty Cook and John Connors did with the Kamma Team. (Kamma engineering provided Surface drives and engine packages to various boat manufactures to brand them "Kamma Editions") Tom also had a retail / rigging operation selling his Gentry Turbo Marine products. That's the only explanation that makes logical sense for a container having 80+ surface drives. Its a great historical find and if the guy who is restoring the Gentry Eagle or anyone else working on a Gentry livery project has the ability to purchase some of these time capsule materials it will be great for their projects. The down side is you have 5 containers full of nearly new or new early 1990's cutting edge technology that by todays standards is outdated, antiquated, and inefficient. Best of luck with the project.

There is no need to insult every new member and accuse them of being "Jim Darr".

79formula 01-12-2014 11:56 AM

If the OSO community would like to pitch in to send me a big power/surface drive combo, i would document the build. You could all see how fast an 18ft Formula could possibly go. If all this is true, it sounds like an awesome find.

Comanche3Six 01-12-2014 12:46 PM

Reading this thread I remember those Gentry drives. Looked like the tail section of the mosquito commissions helicopter. I always liked his twin turbo engines . The Carson Brummett stuff. Awesome, even today!

It's all good. A lot of folks have the Jim Darr jitters now and rightly so but maybe suspicions could be handled be pm with a moderator. Carry on.

orionbbs 01-12-2014 02:56 PM

Boy MikeT you are a real ball buster. This Darr dude must have really ran you guys through the ringer here. I haven't had to go through this much trouble to prove who I am since my days working in the government, I hope all new users don't have to do that.

Its OK I'm game :). The last thing I want is people thinking I'm fake or that finding this cool boat stuff is fake or some kind of weird scam. So here you go. Oh and by the way I'll post more photos of the stuff today I sent my crew chief out to take some pictures of inside one of the containers, the one we can get open. The others have literally sunken down into the dirt and we can only open one door into them.

So some links for those of you who aren't internet challenged :)

My linkedin page (better photo of me I must say) www.linkedin.com/pub/shaun-coleman/0/697/12a

My facebook page (has lots of cool photos of my cars, not a lot of me I like my cars better then I do my face, oh and food too you'll see lots of stuff I like to cook)
https://www.facebook.com/shaun.coleman.18

A car page documenting the restoration of my Impala, also where the photos below I am hosting from (hard to hack a wordpress site MikeT and post photos onto it by the way) http://NASCARImpala.com

and some of me... I hate these pictures but my reputations on the line! :) (Seriously MikeT its all good, you just gave me something to prove though now).

glassdave 01-12-2014 03:38 PM

dude you look exactly like Jim Darr!

just kiddin :D Jim really is a pieceof work and this is the kind of thing he dreams up. Welcome to the board and HOLY CRAP what a find. This would be on par with finding a couple garages full of Smokey's or Shelbys stuff. . . . how heck did you find this stuff?

great cars btw, love to see vintage race cars preserved like that.

I spent last night reading what I could find on the internet with regards to what You have done in the automotive world Shaun. To sum it up I salute You for being driven by passion, not just for the technical aspects of old NASCAR, IMSA etc., but for the history surrounding the sports. You showed a keen interest for the people that were involved back then and Your undertakings clearly proved that it was out of the respect for those individuals and what they had accomplished that You kept at it.

From what I gathered, I'm 100 percent convinced that You are trying Your outmost to make sure these historical powerboat racing parts ends up in the right hands. Not so much to make sure that You get every penny these parts may be worth, but that they end up where they are treasured for what they are and that they will come to good use and honor the legacy that Mr. Gentry left to the performance boat aficionados.

It will be the hours logged by folks running their boats fit with these parts and the friendships made while they improve on their crafts that matter. I personally don't know Carson Brummett. Neither have I been to his shop. The only thing I know for a fact is that anytime his name is mentioned in boaters' circles, adjectives like; kind, helpful, honorable, knowledgeable, trustworthy keeps being spoken. His late father Lou Brummett was a living legend, but Carson has created his own legacy and is the one that Mr. Gentry chose to carry on his finding with marine turbo engines. Like mentioned, Carson got to buy all the manufacturing molds from Mr. Gentry and has from then on continued to develop the marine turbo engine technology, but also been the guru that boaters with turbo motors got help from to run what they had. I end it here Shaun, You got the drift.

I'm glad You are the one that ended up with these containers Shaun. Enjoy the project. Mr. Gentry would have been happy to see You handle this for him.

Cheers, Lars.

Not completely on the topic but was a interesting read...at least for me. Made me wonder where those four 7,400-hp Allison M62 turbines are now. Maybe in one of Shaun's containers?

MikeT you are a tough man to please I must say :) Here are some photos my crew chief took today at the shop. I have no idea what some of this stuff is maybe you guys do. I do know these are the SBC's and some other misc. stuff. These photos are taken from the very front of one of the containers the first 12' and from a shelf in the shop.

The BBC is going to be tore down starting tomorrow to see what all was used to put it together (taking the pan, valve covers off and the intake manifold) I'll have pics of that tomorrow.

Back to MikeT for just a second; seriously dude I'm not sure what one needs to do to prove who someone is to you but I am Shaun Coleman, and the only reason I'm going out of my way is that you kinda miffed me making it seem like I'm not who I say I am. Now lets drop the subject and move on ok? :). Anyways... I'll post more stuff as we go through it if you know what something is please give a shout.

Crew chief was being funny with the USA Today, todays news paper BTW and a photo of my Impala (from my facebook page) since some of you guys (or is it just MikeT) aren't believing me.
