Charlie. I'm pretty sure the Sutphen and the Viper are completely different - especially at the entry. Julio bought the 32 hull mold from New Jersey in 1982. I'm pretty sure that was the Viper hull mold.
Tempest copied a 32' Scorpion. |

I thought Gazell took a Sutphen hull and made a mold from that and...... then designed a new deck for the Viper.
Added 2 feet & changed the deck. There were 11 Viper hulls built. U needed 10 hulls built to qualify for P class. I believe when Felix's venture failed he then sold the mold and it became a Tempest. We raced that Viper the APBA & club races that season in 1980. I bought the Blue GA Sutphen & we would take 2 boats to the races. If it was rough we used the viper. Better in the rough water. Calm races the Sutphen was 3 mph faster. Doller Bill was the donor Both boats in my driveway in Bricktown before the Benihana 1980. If that's the case then the bow profile was completely changed - for the worse. I know of one death from a Scorpion stuffing. Compana, the late owner of Condor.

I did... wish I could find it. It's the M-717 boat... NOT the one pictured in PR. It has SSM 2's and small blocks.

I'll post pics of mine shortly. Can't seem to do so from my iPad. I have a "new" 37. New meaning never splashed hull. Been working on in for a few years now. Getting ready to paint in a few months. Set up with #3s on boxes. Low profile race hatches and installing tambour door for the cabin entrance . If someone wants to post he pics I can send them to you via email. Can't seem to do it from my apple device. Would love to show all the progress to date.

Work on the engine hatches. Went with a low profile design . Looking for stainless steel mesh for the air Inlets or a honeycomb design. Any ideas ? |

Use to go there as well back than when my old man had is 28 Cig. The hardware and women that were there was second to none. You use to see all the big hitters there. Those sure where the days but unfortunately after hurricane Andrew in 92 they never rebuilt it. Ever since than until today is still just empty land.
I would take girls out there on the weekend,go to the bar ,come back to the boat,,get lucky and never leave the slip..Those were the days.. |

Dash panel. We made this out of plexiglass. Fitting it up to ensure it fits as we sand and shape the dash. Next week the Tambour door comes in from Tap-ease. Will be interesting to fabricate tracks and jigs to fit it in the roof. See how it goes..... |

I remember that 24 Carrera and the 24 Scorpion.
Carrera if I recall made very few 24's so how many 24's did Scorpion make ? Those 24 boats ran very well in rough water, it was hard to tell which was what manufacturer between the two at times running on the water. The boats were identical except for the color of the bilge.. (If I remember right Julio used red) :) |
Why are you making the hatches out of wood (To be glassed over I guess) They look pretty good. I would think with your abilities you would just make a set of one-off molds and lay up with a minimal core. Would net you a 1/3 the weight. As far as the vents, I would use sheet aluminum 3/16, punch your vent holes or slots and powdercoat.

What are you guys thoughts on a highly reliable engine package. The 37 has #3s on boxes. I would like to cruise around 65-70. Reliably
|
My 37' Midnight did 70 all day long with HP 500's. I would think it's heavier than your 37. The tradeoff being that you are running though transmissions and SSM's. I had Bravos on mine. Still 65 should be attainable with this power.

Hi, not many around. I was given the actual production numbers a few days ago but I want to verify again to be sure and accurate with my response. I have a Scorpion 38 Competition. It is Supercharged with 525 Mercury Racing motors and SSM #4 Drives. Scorpion makes very tough boats that are an absolute thrill to operate! ! I had the pleasure of talking with Julio (the original boat builder of Scorpion ) over the Christmas holiday and he said he named the company Scorpion because of his daughter Astrological sign.! ..pretty cool !

For vents, see post #128/129 on page 5 of this threat.
Actually, this thread is one of the nicest rehabs I've ever seen done. http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/c...project-5.html |
