Well I got my new sea strainer parts $7. Each. Not bad the cheapest I found online was $65. Each on ebay. Time will tell but I don't forsee any problems out of them. What do you guys think did I cut a corner I shouldn't have?

TxHawk 02-09-2016 08:43 PM

Non much sea weed in Kansas. You don't have to run them if that doesn't work...

Excalibur40 02-09-2016 09:14 PM

I kinda figured since I had them I would run them. Can anyone tell me if trs drives have any bellows that can leak water into the bilge? I'm new to the trs stuff but have had plenty of alphas leak in the past. I'm planing on just changing the oil in them and running them if I don't have to worry about leaks

TxHawk 02-09-2016 09:42 PM

TRS have bellows.

Excalibur40 02-09-2016 11:01 PM

So what bellows? Just the shaft? No shift cable no thru prop exhaust no impeller or water hoses... right?

Rick G 02-10-2016 06:19 AM

That's correct Excalibur , the TRS only has a bellows over the input shaft . The shift cable is in board to the tranny and the oil reservoir has a seal between the gimbal and the drive . The water pick up is external and the exhaust has no bellows . RG.

ham_r_down01 02-12-2016 11:11 AM

Bellows leak on mine leaked through the output shaft bearing and put water in the transmission.

I have been busy at work this week and it's been cold so I haven't got a lot done but we are assembling one of the motors tomorrow morning and my friend has a running engine stand so we can do a breaking procedure before they are in the boat. Also my transmission in my truck started slipping so there are putting a new "built" trany in today. I also got 4.56 gears and some helper springs for my truck. I know everyone on here will think I'm an idiot but I'm pulling the hawk with my 1/2 ton lifted truck on 35s.

I forgot I guess I did get a little done since my last update I got all the hardware off and preped the top for paint.

Rick G 02-12-2016 03:53 PM

Excalibur , the discussion has been had many times on this site . But I would consider the issue of insurance should something happen when towing your 15,000 lb plus boat behind a truck rated to tow half that weight. Just a thought .
In Ontario in order to tow a boat that weighs more than 10,000 lb behind any vehicle the driver is required to have a class A licence ( transport truck ) I'm not sure what your state requirements are but I would check .
RG.

Excalibur40 02-12-2016 05:17 PM

You are right about it being too much weight for the truck. I wouldn't be towing any long distance with it for that I will use my dad's 6.7 cummins. My truck does have upgraded suspension including 3/4 ton shocks and extra leaf springs, upgraded disk brakes with drilled slotted rotors, motor/trans upgrades and it pulls it fine and with the trailer brakes it stops pretty well also have 4.56 gears and 12.5 wide tires on the ground

Can anyone tell me if it's ok to run a engine with cast-iron manifolds without water going thru them? I'm going to break in my engines on a running engine stand and it's set up with a automotive waterpump and radiator but I don't have headers. Will the iron center riser exhaust crack without water? I have new gaskets for the risers I would change after the breakin

Most likely you will wreck them. I would not even think about it. Hook the water up to them like in the boat. or use garden hose with a y connector just for the manifolds.

ham_r_down01 02-21-2016 08:07 AM

What about a set of cast iron truck manifolds..... I did a quick search on Craigslist and found a set of headers by me for $60 asking. Then you can resell them if you wanted.

Excalibur40 02-21-2016 09:36 AM

I have a set of header on my 1949 sedan delivery but they are a pain to take off but looks like that's what's going to happen. Thanks

What kind of speed should I be hoping for? I should have around 500hp at the cranks and I have trs drives with so 20 x 15 four blade props my title says 8000lbs

My Hawk went 59mph with stock 425HP merc 454's, TRS drives, and 19P revolution 4 blades. Ran some 21p mirage plus 3 blades, maybe 1mph more top speed, but cruise wasnt very good.

Good boats. Check the transom for rot, and check the bottom for hook. If its been sitting on that trailer in your picture for a long time, there's a good chance the bottom isn't very straight anymore.

I got the motors almost ready for break in. The boat is going to be simple clean white (I think) and I want under the hatch to be a little more wild.

jeff32 02-24-2016 11:33 AM

Pantera engine!!! You need to upgrade your radio with FUSION products!!!

Excalibur40 03-16-2016 11:20 AM

Hey everyone I have been out of town working so not alot has happened with the boat. I did get my new rotating assembly for the 2nd motor. And the 1st motors is on the stand waiting to be installed after I do alittle more cleaning in the bilge. Just wanted to give a little update on progress.

jeff32 03-16-2016 12:44 PM

Keep up the good work!

whiskeyhangover 04-07-2016 05:46 AM

I thought i read earlier you were asking if wellcraft used kevlar...
correct me if I'm wrong but if you have an '82 Hawk '40 it should be
a Bill Farmer boat, because i have an '82 Hawk '40 and it's signed on the inside by all of people who made the boat which is Bill Farmer/Don Able and so on.

DMOORE 04-14-2016 09:53 PM

Excellent thread ! Its great to see another beauty being put back on the water. As for the TRS bellows, since she has been sitting for so long, it may be worth changing them out. I had one leak on a Scarab I owned and it also filled the transmission. Luckily i caught it before i ran it and no damaged was caused . Had to "pickle" the transmission with diesel then refill after the bellows change.

Electrical fire. It took the fire department 40 minutes to show up after it was called in.

Excalibur40 05-04-2016 11:26 AM

No one was home except our dog but she got out. Then the next day she got hit by a car and died. I have had nothing but bad luck.
