80's color schemes
I just have to get a kick out of the 80's. Someone tell me why teal and pink was such a popular thing back then. Humor me as I was born In 85. 🤣
Not saying it's bad I just get a chuckle out of how often I see the combo and I know there are others. Feel free to share em. |

You can thank Miami Vice for such a cool color combo of the 80s and 90s. - My old 1990 Larson Senza Spectre. |
That is a nice looking boat (other then the colors maybe), any more pictures?

everything in the 80s was bright and over the top. I loved it!!
|
I would say this is specifically why pink and teal were big in the 80's.

I love(not) the bowling alley images too. You know, like the formulas had, circle, triangle, square. We looked past a few of those more than once. Good boats, but we couldn't get past the dated design. (Sorry if someone on here has that).

Miami Vice for the win (depending on how you look at it). It all started there (really via MTV).
https://www.looper.com/257978/the-un...of-miami-vice/ 1988 marked the first year of "Palm Beach Imron" for Formula and the color combination pretty much stuck around (in variations) through the early 90's. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d3501f267.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...66a789e68.jpeg |
You just had to be there.

I would venture to say a lot of the 80's paintjobs aged better than the early 90's ones. That being said, in 1991, when you saw a Cafe Racer with pink and blue triangles and circles it was the coolest thing you ever saw.

For a lot of us it was those 80's paint and graphics that caught our attention on these boats. It was just another part of what drew us to the boating world.

i like the 80s 90s graphics much better than the kid scribble of todays paint lack of talent i guess? the first JBS racing was cool ii also love the colors on the Out of Control skater

the reason for the crazy colors and wild graphics was because the '80's were all about excess. men were men and carried big hand guns, women were women and wore tight dress, parties were out of control and you could say what you meant with out getting sued for sexual harassment. every thing was done over the top because you could and because this is America damnit.

Done right, I think retro eighties paint schemes can still be just as cool as we remembered them.

The 'Miami Vice' color scheme is brought to another level by Heath's 38 KV and I can't wait to see it with new interior and all. Out here on 'The Left Coast' Gelcoat colors used to sell boats more so than the boat designs. Even though Powerboat Magazine and Hot Boat Magazine used to point out the worst constructions and hull designs, they were both too kind imho. Back in Europe, anything more extravagant than a white hull with a blue, green, or red deck was a rarity. Fresh off the plane I remember going to a boat show in Orange County, Southern California in the mid '80s, and I was completely dumbfounded. If a boat had less than 7 gelcoat colors it was a budget boat. Most boats were only 18'-30' and for the lakes. The razor-sharp differentiation between each color was unreal and I knew I had to work my a.. off so I could at least own a 20' or so. I was in love.
These days, like in the old days, having the best Gelcoat guys is what's going to make you a real player in the West. Companies like Teague, IMCO, Boostpower, Whipple, etc. are local for the more exotic drivelines, but it's still the play with Gelcoat colors and nowadays the mega sound systems that are essential in The Wild West if your boat brand wants to be a contender. Here's a video that somebody shot at the 1990 Anaheim Boat Show in California. The video quality is not the best, but late legends like Gene Willen of Howard Custom Boats and Nick Barron of Hallett Boats appear. I wish there was more footage from old boat shows, but unfortunately it seems to be a rarity. My 1981 Schiada 20SS. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a57d28b31.jpeg |
Probably because the video cameras back then weighed about 12lbs and were the size of a beach bag !
|
The technology was in a rise since late 70s, hence the advent of personal computing. Companies started to create vibrant ads and logos, even the Apple logo had rainbow colors in it. Teal/turqouise, pink and yellow were considered as aesthetic shades back then.

I'll say, this has been a really cool thread and love the discussion and pictures!
It definitely seems like it was a wild time for colors although I'd argue now with wraps and all there are some pretty radical paint jobs just different hues. The artwork was pretty slick in the 80's and prior era's as well compared to now. Looking at the older Apache's is almost like looking at a sailor Jerry tattoo. Awesome, simple and classy yet now "retro". |

Love these color schemes

Woww!! Love that sword pointing effect. That's really cool.

When trying to reach absolute perfection, paint is the only way to go.

Not mine. Flat bottoms with huge engines is a cool American thing, but a Scandinavian like myself is more about ocean-capable boats. The one in the photo was done by Billy B. Here's a link to his shop, and do look him up on Facebook for inspirational paint schemes.

This is me and my brother Brian 32 years ago. 77 Sanger flat bottom with a 460 ford. Wish I had this boat back. I always wanted to put a bow tie engine in it. I’d probably keep the paint since it was my dads idea and I couldn’t bring myself to paint over it.

Seems like I remember a lot of those old jets boats had Olds motors.
|
I always loved the look of the Sangers.
