So far this step took about 6 hours including building the frame.
once you crank up the deck, just pull the hull out.
will be posting more pics soon.

the boat is a 87 313 cc chris craft scorpion.

glassdave 04-20-2009 07:59 PM

Woohoo! . . .let the fun begin!! :D

stevekyp 04-20-2009 08:08 PM

My brother in law wants to go 100mph on this boat!!
Any tips on making a strong hull?:evilb:

glassdave 04-21-2009 01:40 AM

Thats a tough bill to fill in an outboard boat of that vintage. If he's serious he's gonna hafta put it on a serious diet. Pull the entire superstructure out and replace it with a full composite layup, corecell stringers and bulkneads that kinda stuff, and also flat deck it with something much lighter. The other alternative is throw huge dollars into giant power and do it the old fasioned way. :D

Ghostrider 04-21-2009 05:07 PM

Rocket assist booster motors like batman's boat. Twin 632's, 10-71 superchargers and big brass cahones! :evilb:

Hey dave.
What is the proper lay up for corecell?
For transom,do you still get three quarter corecell and glass it
between each corecell, and how many layers of glass in between? remember its an outboard boat with 3 motors and bracket. total rear weight is 1800 pounds!

and also proper lay up for stringers and bulkheads.:drink:

SmurfOnABoat 04-30-2009 08:53 AM

Just gotta side question to ask.

How much weight do you think those frames could handle?

I wouldn't use corecell or any other composite in the transom especially on an OB boat. I would still go three layers of half inch ply, you can use composites for all the stringers though. in the "what wood to use" thread there is a layup schedule for transoms. Using composites like Coosa for stringers is a breeze, easy to work with.

I was thinking the same think. I've seen many a loads drop and ruin the day. Just don't let anyone get under the load. I've been told a standard 2x6 is only good for about 200 pounds. You might want to have the numbers calculated before you hang too much more weight. You might want to check the load capability on the come alongs and wire rope as well. Its cheap insurance and someone on the board could probably give you a number.

Awesome project though. Keep posting pictures of the process.

The headers are 2x10 double and through bolted to the 12 foot 6x6
There are not free standing.
The structure is bolted to the 6x6s that border the property.

The comolons can handle 2000lbs each!
That top deck is not that really heavy:eek:
I was still in the top deck when i was cranking it up!
Then after my brother inlaw pulled the hull out,i slowly cranked it down.

Will post more pics soon!!!

:party-smiley-048::party-smiley-048:Its definatly worth removing the deck for this project.
We tried to do repairs on stringers and no room to work.
Now with it all open,we can dance.
Will keep you guys posted!!!!

jeff32 04-30-2009 09:23 PM

Your brother in law's neighbors must be as interested in this project as we are... for different reasons of course.

Jigsaw89 05-04-2009 11:00 PM

How can you prevent this from happening when removing the deck and not having a mold to drop the boat into to preserve its shape?? Pics would be great.
Thanks!

Thats pretty funny !! You know if we gave out a questionniare to all of our neighbors asking them who is the biggest redneck on the block I think OSO members would atleast be in the top 90% :D

Thanks!

U take some 16 foot 2X4's and place them along the top of the hull on each side ,,then take straps and go around the hull, pull them tight and leave them until job is done !!!!

1 strap every 3 feet or so !!!

That should help !!

littledcsrodshop 05-08-2009 11:07 PM

Interesting project.. Forgive any oversight & already covered topics in other threads but what are the plans ?? Getting rid of the open & going closed deck , or leaving it open ?? I talked to somebody several years ago in your area (I think)
that had a 28 open & I think it was in regards to doing some trading on a boat I or my father had , not real sure as there have been a few to many projects between Here & there.. may have even been your bro inlaw..

I don't get in this section too much as I spend the vast majority of my waking hours with a squeegee or sandpaper in one hand & a Sata Jet in the other , so sometimes I have had all I want by the time I am searching OSO & thats why Glassdave is my hero.. lol..

Anyways no matter which direction its going its a cool project & I will be sure to keep my eyes on it & wish you guys the best !!

Congrats on completing a ton of work so far !! Gotta love the dedication !!

So what are the plans for the upper deck ?

scarabman 01-03-2010 07:58 AM

How are you making sure the hull keeps its shape and doesnt become distorted, while doing all this?

Looks like a heck of a project!

Its been a hell of a project! We are still going at it! We cant wait till were done!

stevekyp 02-09-2010 10:09 PM

scorpion project

Hey guys! We finished all the glass work on the boat. All new stringers and bulkheads! The stringers and bulk heads are 2 layers of 3/4 marinegrade ply! and 4 layers of glass! We went through at least a 55 gallons of epoxy! we also did the top deck too on this center console boat! crazy **** The transom is about 4 inches thick and everything now is heavy duty! Yes you can say it is a overbuild, but thats what he wanted! We did lower the deck back on for a dry fit and so far no problems! We will be lifting it back up so we can do the final bonding. The hull did open about 2 inches on each side but no problems on pushing it on the sides to lower the deck back on! One way to hold the shape is to strap it after the deck removal! We did that but then we decided to take the straps off! Anyway it worked out fine! I will be posting more pics of the finished bottom hull soon! Once the deck is back on,it will be glassed to the hull. There was alot of prep and grinding on this project! And a **** load of 1708,like 4 and 5 layers on everything! Once the deck is back on and glassed,it will be time to start doing the prep for paint! We are going to use gell coat! crazy but better! After its all done i will be doing my boat as well. Its the 34 foot scarab raider on this site as well! Thank you guys for the support and input! I will be posting pics soon!!!!!!!:drink:

stevekyp 02-09-2010 10:26 PM

The motors that are going on this thing are 3x250efi's It sould go about 75 or more! On this 32 foot boat, they say it weighs about 4500 pounds. Well with all the exra beef we are probably more! But it will be an awesome ride when its done!:evilb:

you can bet on 5500 pounds at this point. 55 gallons of epoxy and a typical wet non bagged layup with that amount of resin should net ya about a thousand extra pounds pretty easy  :D

pics look good
