Default quick upholstery question

I need to drill through some padded upholstery. Anyone have a tech tip on how not to ball up the padding while drilling through it? Thanks for any suggestions.

Poke a hole with a ice pick or something and use a rubber grommet or if its a small drill bit use the plastic tube from a bic pen. Good luck.

Sometimes running the drill backwards will wear a hole
without grabbing. Needs to be a really sharp bit.

Used that trick on side panels.
