Finally have the engine in it's final mock up with the exhaust on. Took a lot longer than I thought thanks to a frozen broken stud in the aluminum exhaust manifold. It's ready for the final resting place (knock on wood). If you look between the manifold and the riser there's a 1/2" chunk of aluminum I made with two sets of holes so I could rotate the exhaust about twenty degrees and make it exit where I wanted. The pipes are dry all the way to the down turn.

Haven't had much time to work on the boat. Work has been crazy busy. The engine is in it's final resting place and you can see what the exhaust ended up looking like. I'm pretty happy with what I was able to come up with.

The down turn exhaust looks great. I had something very similar fabricated for my Mariah Z302 using 4" PVC to form the correct angles and departure out of the transom. My boat is very quiet at idle and exhaust is fully open when up on plane but pointed downward so somewhat muffled.

Finally signs of life. Question fot the engine guys. I'm running flat tappett hydraulic lifters. I adjusted the lifters to zero lash plus a quarter turn. That made zero compression on all eight. I reset the lifters to zero lash and made 180 psi on all eight? Other than that the oil pouring out of front main like it's not there and the crack in the Gil pipe we're almost there.

for the lifters, you need to make sure they are primed with oil before setting the 1/4 turn. typically soaking them in oil for a couple days is one way. another way is to set them to zero lash and crank the motor with the valve covers off, slowly tightnening the poly lock until no more "clatter" (this insures zero lash), then put 1/4 turn (because the engine is running, lifters will be primed). another thing to make sure of is that you were setting the lifters while at TDC for that cylinder...
tip: if you think you will have an oil mess with the valve covers off, pre cut some cardboard to stand up on the out sides of the head to keep the oil contained. in my experience, it is an un needed step, though i have heard stories of oil flying!! |
