Good news about crank driven sea water pumps

Looks like a great solution on boats that have decent access to the front of the engine. Unfortunately, not the case on my older Baja. Even with a removable panel behind the back seat, engine sits down in a well with not a lot of clearance in front of pulley.

Has anyone installed a crank driven pump like this on a SBC with an Alpha 1 outdrive? I'm thinking of trying it. I assume you remove the pump in the drive but still use the water pick-up in the drive for cooling the drive oil?

A friend of mine tried that, it would tend to flatten the hose from the outdrive to pump due to suction. He took out the alpha impeller and it was much worse, flattened it so bad it would not pump water.
It would work, but need to get reinforced hose.

what I liked even better was the setup on my 1972 24 Spectra V-drive boat. Not one belt, everything was direct driven. The waterpump was coupled to the camshaft and the Motorola alternater was coupled to the crankshaft. I've replaced the old Neovane pump with a Magnaflow pump that's even easier to replace [ two minutes] the impeller in.
