Engine upgrade in process. ADVICE
At the end of season last year i spun a bearing on the BLOCK, catastrophic failure. I did not realize the extent of the problem until my engine builder pointed it out. After give me some options I decided to upgrade. 565ci carberated, dart irion eagle heads ported and polished to 390cc, JE pistons, MSD Ignition, Dominator 1050CFM carb, ect....
Here is my dilemma. When i removed the engine I really did not take measurements or photos that would be helpful to me making the my next purchases. I need to know the following: Carb pad height, need max height intake i can use Maximum height i can go with lightening headers and capitons call exhaust Oil pan type, I've seen two styles and max size Am i able to do away with my water pump and install just a cross over. Would also like to know the pros and cons on crossover vs water pump. Basically i need dementions of engine compartment or to know what i can use. 1994 21'Baja Twilight Cruiser Thanks in Advance! |
It would help to know what you had in the boat to start with & some pics of the engine compartment would help to see what is there. Randy

Just about had all the info for ya's. Existing engine was 7.4L454 330hp. As i said in the above photos i have aren't the best but here they are. Well maybe not, seems i can't upload pics. here is my email if you like to send me yours and i can shoot over some pics or if i'm missing something to upload photos. Boat is still in storage and dont have any with engine compartment empty. I could prob get some.

Can't see your pics but here is a couple of an engine in the classifieds with lightning headers & aftermarket manifold & carb to give you an idea
|
Give me a few days Randy. I'm going to make arrangements to get it out of storage this week, get some other photos and become a paying member here. I'll keep you posted.
Photos you sent based off photos i have it looks pretty close. What about the other questions i had? |

No mis print 390cc You can drop a golf ball through each port!
|
i hate to be the berror of bad news but even a 565 will be a pooch with 390 intake runners.
|
Usually in a marine application you don't necessarily want to have large runner volumes. We usually don't spin our engine above 6000RPM. So we try to take advantage of the smaller volume runners and get the best flow with the least cross sectional area. This will in turn have a higher port velocity creating low end torque. Boats are all about flat torque curves and building peak power in a limited RPM. Do you have the cam specs?
|
I'm not concerned, I'm 100% faithful this guy knows. Engine was machined at a famous funny car drivers shop here in the city i live.
P.S. I live in Central OHIO |
No but i will get them tomorrow and add with photos of the heads I believe he called the cam a "Big Bob"

This guy has produced some of the best marine engines in my area and is well known. As i said before i'll get specs and pics for ya'll.
So can anyone help with the questions i've asked above? |
Do you need to know the stack up of all the components or your engine bay dimensions? I can get the stack up of all the components at my shop tomorrow. I have a 540 with Lightning header sitting on the engine start stand right now.

Rookie thats what i'm looking looking for!! [email protected] Sounds like you have what i'm building now.

Jersco,
With a Dart single plane and a 4150 Holley the overall height is 32" from the bottom of a Canton 10qt oil pan to the top of a 3" Gaffrig flame arrestor. My Dominator carb measures 4" and the 4150 measures 3.5". So add 1/2" for the Dominator. |
THANKS ROOKIE!
If you could get me one more measurement. I believe i need from the motor mounts to top of curb. I'm going to get her out of storage today and will upload pics tonight. |
Need to elaborate a little more. I don't understand what you're looking for.

Sorry Rookie I had a typo on "carb". What my request was, a measurement from motor mount to top of carb. I did not get her home today could not get into storage. What i'm going to do is put a level on the stringer motor mounts then measure to the bottom side of the sundeck, then open and measure again. This should give me what i need.
MOTOR, maybe I'm missing something I believe i've said Thanks several times. FYI Definition of thanks Thanks may refer to: Gratitude, an attitude of expression of thankfulness. I'm a General Contractor, common with people wanting more. And someone says THANKS that almost as good as the pay check, but not quite, thanks dont pay the bills. LOL I do apperciate OSO site and amount of knowledgeable information among members! Thanks again everyone! |
I'll should be back out at the shop tomorrow. I'll get you the measurement from the center line of the top motor mount bolts to the top of the carb.
|
Thank you SIR!

P.S. I live in Central OHIO I'd be getting full hydraulic steering on a 21 Baja for sure even with a mild 502. |
I started to make a long post on my thought's on those huge ports in a N.A.boat motor. But instead I would like to ask if you'll just let us know how it all works out ..I think that is to big for a driver / pleasure boat.
I didn't mean to offend you commenting about you wanting more measurements on engine to fit your boat. It is what it is. |
NOt a problem Motor, glad you clarified!
Guys I'll be getting the specs yet this week to cuve your interest. This engine is going to produce HUGE power. Hydraulic steering and new XR out drive are coming nxt week. Again i'm not a engine guy but, i know how to fip a house or give you a custom kitchen. Thunder, i did not say that a funny car guy build my engine but only machined in their shop. Not into throwing out names but i believe there are only 2-funny car champions from central ohio. SIngle + no kids = toys |
Huge power in a 21' Baja is going to take big balls to run wot .Make sure your insurance is up to date
|
Does anyone even know how this hull will handle power?
Might or might not be the right platform to build on. UD |

John Force, Cruz Pedragon, tony pedragon, Kenny Bernstein, actually, those are the only funny car champs I can think of at the moment! |

i think he means blown alcohol funny car.:party-smiley-004:

Valid points made about power vs hull design, my H2X felt pretty loose with a 454 mag but not bad. At least he is taking safety serious enough to upgrade steering & drive before the boat gets wet. Not sure if that boat has tabs if so i'm sure they are the Bennett sport tabs, that might or might not be enough. If the power is too much he can always put it back stock & sell it to get something that will handle the power. One last thing I am thinking is if the boat hooks up well with that kind of power it will be a rocket up to a certain point. That's how my Eliminator was & it was a blast to drive til it got to about 80-85mph. JMO Randy
|
You know a 25' eliminator is a lot more capable than a 21' Baja taking huge power . I agree it should be a rocket ship and if treated with respect would be fun .Problem is if OP has a couple cold ones and thinks he needs to air it out ...JMO
To OP ...be carefull |
That is why I posted "to a certain point". I talked with OP when he started this thread & I think he is aware that stuff happens very quickly at speed. I look at it like this, With added power comes added responsibility especially when someone someone elses safety is concerned. Good luck with the build & be safe. Randy
