Electrics are commonly used in robotics - almost all are 12V. Just google "linear actuator" for a long list of online vendors. Many stainless versions are out there, not specifically targeted at the boating community but will work as well or better than marine versions.

Go on eBay, this seller is where I got mine and my buddy got his. Good prices and shipping. All sizes. Mine were like new, I got a pair of 18"
