Default Another dumb rookie mistake, any solutions?

I thought I would be smart so I pulled out my snap in carpet, bought the equivilant size from a marine supplier then had it cut and the edges bound for much less than ordering the replacement. Well I just learned that there is a difference in the backing of carpet that is meant to be glued in versus carpet that is meant to be snapped in. Mine is leaving piles of black dust everywhere.
Other than starting over are there any options? could I roll something on the backing to keep it intact to last a couple of years?

thanks
