Default unique shifting idea.....will it work?

I have a 1977 Scarab 300, one of the switches that controls fwd/reverse in the throttle is bad. I can't find a replacement switch or throttle assembly.

Being that it is an electric shift, would it be possible to wire it to a 3 way shift and use it like a 4 lever control?

Is it a merc trans? I believe there is a recommendation to convert it to cable shift due to a possible partial electrical shift burning it up.

I believe it is. Do you have any more info on the conversion?
