Building a pair of new 555's

I am currently in the process of building a pair of brand new 555's. One for my 28'cat and one for a friend's 29' Warlock V-hull. They will be identical except mine will have a 420 megablower and Stainless marine gen 3 exhaust. His will have an 8-71 and CMI headers.

Merlin 3 blocks
4.560X4.250
Brodix 325 heads
JE -20cc blower pistons
Crane 651 cams
Cometic .040 head gaskets
pistons .010 in the hole
C.R. aprox 8.5 to 1

Just looking for around 800 reliable HP
Both will be dyno'd in full marine trim and I will post the results in a few weeks when they are completed.
Should be a good baseline comparison between blowers and exhaust

Of course, I will have to keep swapping pullies on mine until I make more power than his does

If anyone sees something fundamentally wrong with this combo, feel free to call me out on it before I get too far along.

We already own the blowers and cyl heads, and are being reused from previous builds.

I like the 555cu/in choice ! Thanx for sharing the thread!

snapmorgan 01-12-2017 10:15 AM

I wish your pistons would have worked for me, but I decided to keep it simple and use a 4.25" crank

snapmorgan 01-12-2017 10:20 AM

MT, you want to run that through your program and see what they SHOULD make?

mike tkach 01-12-2017 03:49 PM

both will make 800+by accident.tuned correctly should be closer to 900 hp.

What rockers are you planning on running

MILD THUNDER 01-12-2017 04:25 PM

Snap, are they both intercooled? Or neither?

What carbs you guys running?

Boatally Insane 01-12-2017 04:33 PM

Here is a link to my 555 build for reference.. :)

I have a set of Harlan Sharpe, 2 set of Crane Gold and a set of Crower stainless. Whichever ones set up the best. all 1.7's

800 Holleys to start out with, because that is what we have. Will see how they do on the dyno and go from there. Being prepped now by Ken Jones performance. He is somewhat of a legend around the Midwest, but mostly in his own mind. I will most likely end up with fuel injection on mine if it turns out that I like this boat.

The 8-71 has a chiller, I would put one on the 420, but where would I find one?

Teague has them new of course. But, sometimes you can find them used cheap. Having a chiller, will really make for a great comparison build to build.

That is pretty badass

snapmorgan 02-13-2017 08:58 AM

I am considering putting mechanical fuel pumps on these engines. Is anyone else doing this on 800-900hp engines? What are you running?

snapmorgan 02-13-2017 09:01 AM

Short blocks are done, cams degreed. I set of heads here today and getting ready to be installed

Yes. The baker engineering mechanical pumps.

ICDEDPPL 02-13-2017 09:14 AM

I`m running a baker mechanical pump with a regulator and tank return. -10AN lines
mild is running the Holley pumps self regulated and no return and it seems like no issues.
I was running out of fuel pressure with those at 6000rpm. Fuel gauge would start to drop to 4psi till I`d let off.

Do you know the GPH needed?

MILD THUNDER 02-13-2017 10:42 AM

The 900sc and 1000sc mercury engines, used those style mechanical pumps. Fed two dominators at 6000rpm.

Where did you have your regulators set? Just wondering if you had set to the max flow, I'm running mechanical pumps on sc build with dual carbs and have the regulators but wasn't going to bother even installing given the new build. Mainly just to eliminate plumbing.

Dan is running return style regulators, fuel psi set to 7psi I believe. His Baker pumps, put out either 11, or 15 psi, I forget which ones he bought. It works well, and his fuel psi stays very steady.

I am running the self regulated version of those pumps, which are regulated to 7psi. Mine are the holley six valve marine pumps, that merc used on the 900sc. They don't make them anymore. Next move, will be doing what Dan has. I think the return style regulator is the way to go.

Of course, rigging is imperative. I have -10 lines from fuel tank, to pump, -10 line to a fuel block up near the blower, and then -6 line to each bowl. Carb engines need volume, not pressure. Those pumps push fuel alot better than they pull it, like most pumps.

John, if you're interested in the black anodized fuel logs like I have in this pic, let me know. The place I get them from, they are crazy cheap, as they make them in house. You can plumb in a return regulator off them as well. They have 1/2" NPT inlet, 1/2 NPT outlet on opposite side, and four 3/8 NPT outlets to carb bowls.

getrdunn 02-13-2017 07:26 PM

It dawned on me right after I posted. I wish this woulda come to me before my hampster cage finally stopped spinning and figured out what I was going to do. Regardless these are the ticket for any hp build. Joe I was looking last week for fuel logs but disnt find anything I liked so just tonight I was looking again at the stainless under over jobs. I was going to actually start a thread what works best with side by side mounted carbs and linkage. I don't want any snags at wot as I usually bring her in a little hot as it is.
Tks for that and will get in touch.

getrdunn 02-13-2017 07:29 PM

Stainless like 250-300 a side plus this that and the other.

snapmorgan 02-14-2017 06:12 AM

I see that Baker has a 7.5# marine pump. I think I will call them and ask some questions about it

MILD THUNDER 02-14-2017 06:25 AM

Teague sells them also

MILD THUNDER 03-24-2017 10:38 AM

So you did get the chiller ...:)

snapmorgan 03-24-2017 10:59 AM

Yes, found a 250 chiller here locally and drilled and tapped the 420 mounting holes in the top of it. Looks like it should work perfectly

Awesome.

Going to the dyno soon?

snapmorgan 03-24-2017 11:46 AM

I hope so. Waiting on the carbs for this one and the heads to get done for the second one.

253 03-30-2017 07:53 AM

That baby is lookin good, let me know when going to the Dyno, I want to go watch
I can bring the Carb's , I left Ken a message but haven't head back from him.,you may want to call him.

snapmorgan 04-14-2017 09:21 AM

Going to the dyno this afternoon with the first one. The one with the 420 on it.

Got on the dyno late this afternoon. After getting a few bugs worked out, we got to make 1 pull before calling it quits for tonight. Will start back in the morning and see where we end up. Here is the sheet from the one and only pull today

MILD THUNDER 04-14-2017 10:01 PM

How much boost was she making? Carbs out of the box ?

snapmorgan 04-15-2017 08:49 AM

Carbs work done by Ken Jones performance here in Walnut Hill Illinois. Making 9 pounds of boost. I am probably going to need more carb

Dam, 9lbs and not even at 800hp? Something seems amiss big time. Your combo should be making more than that, quite a bit more than that.

What pulley ratio are you at?

mike tkach 04-15-2017 09:17 AM

first pull at 32 deg timing,i think 34 or 35 will show 40 to 50 more hp.

mike tkach 04-15-2017 09:19 AM

joe,did you install the cam straight up or advance or retard them?

Does seem like shes running out of steam early for that combo.

snapmorgan 04-15-2017 10:23 AM

Degreed it straight up. Warming her up now with 36 deg
