Joe, did you get a chance to look at data logs? The 1 hour log shows the start retard active. i only have 1* retard available but you can see the 1* dip during start and just prior to running. But there are some crazy spikes on the log at around the 3556, 3657, 3662, 3672 mark, this is where the kickback was happening. It looks like it's trying to start but the RPM's jump through the roof and the timing jumps too.

just looked at it now. I definitely see what you are talking about with those spikes. . At one point when you were cranking it looks like the rpm the box recorded was 8,000rpm for a split second, and obviously put you at full timing when that happens.

i looked thru my logs and some of my buddies logs i have stored, i havent seen that yet.

Throwing darts here, but have you verified your pickup wiring, as well as coil polarity? Few guys have wired them backwards. Esp the pickup wires. Purple is positive on the box, but negative on the msd pickup.

Other than that ,id maybe take a look at the reluctor wheel and air gap. Maybe fire an email off to daytona.

Thanks for thinking about this but according to my literature the purple is positive on bothhttps://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a4737b1cd6.jpg

you should look at the pick up magnet(under dist. cap),it should have a dot on it and it gets oriented a certain way,if backwards it mess's up the timing.

I'll check, but the boat has NEVER kicked back until two weeks ago when I installed the Daytona sensors and locked the timing at 38. Previously it was around 34 and never kicked back but did groan a little when trying to start.

See how the wire colors switch at the distributor side? Purple becomes negative on the distributor side.
