51222R offers good flow but does not offer small micron capture at all compared to other filters
I would not use this filter ever for breaking in a new engine. |
I run the 51222r Wix, but like BUP said break in was on a standard purolator car filter with high micron. I don’t think anyone will disagree that more oil and filter changes is better than less and more oil flow is better than less. The big Folgers can filter is 51222r to answer the OP’s question. Full disclosure, I am an Amsoil dealer. I use the Donaldson P550832 which is the WIX equivalent. Be wary of the racing filters, they will typically pass particles twice the size of the standard filters. The Donaldson has sufficient surface area to provide full flow regardless of viscosity and volume and it's rated at 20 microns. It keeps my oil so clean that at the end of the season I still have trouble seeing the oil on the dip stick. Which is quite a feat as I do a lot of river cruising with a big cam and I'm carbureted. I actually use my old engine oil as bar lube in my chainsaw.

But this Donaldson is not the one with large outer diameter!
I use an 600SCi with the older Merc filters that use the big diamter! As this merc filters are highpriced,i look for an alternative but here now so much filters listed,that i know not any more what to use! I want antidrainback and a good filter with small microns. I use motor most time only for cruising and my oilpressure is very good.60-70 Psi. Can i use Moroso 22465 or are the any better filters that makes my oil clearer??? I see that oil with merc filter is fast dirty and my engine have under 100 Hours. regards. Michael |
Merc Racing filter #35-840634K01, for the 700 SCI, is getting harder to find every year.
Not sure if I want to put a WIX 51222R on the engines. |
I look for filter with smaller micron nummber like 10-15!
As i change oil all 20 hours i think its better to use finer filter that takes more particels out of the oil. I have Moroso 22465 here but is list with 25 microns. So what filter is finer with this size?? Michael |

I’m running an HP6 and only finding racing filters at 27 microns, and really would like something tighter for the new engine. If anyone knows of one off hand I’d appreciate it. |
If another doesn't list what your looking for, use this to find the one which fits
Catalogs My engine builder said to use the racing (larger micro number) because its in a boat. There is not all the road dust and crud that you would find on land. That said, if you can find one which will pass the volume at the maximum particle size, with drain back, its all good. As another mentioned, if your filter will be mounted threads up, then the drain back is not necessary |
