350 SBC cam
Fella on another forum asking if this cam is good for a boat.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0ae5a22725.png |
Need more info than just ‘a boat.”
You know the drill ie: info needed to help pick a cam |
1989 Rinker 21 foot something
One of those Pro mechanics says this is what he needs. For me it looks like a car race cam and not a low end torque truck cam, hence the question |
Not a race cam, but yeh, prob more than he wants duration wise.
so, other questions would be: exhaust ? compression ? heads ? intake carb needs/wants/type of use The two most popular cans on a 350 merc is 1)comp cans 212, 218 at .050” / 112lsa and 2)comp cams 218/224 at .050” 112lsa 1st: factory exhaust, normal runavout boat, 8:1 to 9:1 compression 2nd cam : aftermarket exhaust, performance type boat, 8.5:1-9.5:1 compression |
This is the thread, maybe you can obtain needed info
https://forums.iboats.com/threads/89.../#post-5647415 |
The pics are blurry, even the pics of documents. Says I must join. I don’t want to. He can post here if he needs or wants more info. Tons of marine sbc guys here. Stock and performance.
I’m sure most of us would be happy to help. Speaking of which, there is a lot in my short post above. Lol. |
Not letting me send you guys any replies......
Saying I can’t put in a url, but I am not trying to put in a url..... confused because I’m trying to give you guys all of my information!
|
Hoping this will finally post...
Owner of the boat specified!Started with a “floor patch”.. then found a jb welded block.. pulled engine and bought a new one. Engine builder I got it from said the cam would be fine for a boat
|
Not letting me post... saying I can’t add urls until 10 posts
I’m not adding any urls.. so frustrating
|
1989 Rinker Captiva: not letting me post pics....
Not sure I can help myself here... can’t post pics and this is all super frustrating. Have tried posting over 20 times
|
just 6 more post to be able to upload pics
|
just send a series of short posts to hit 10 posts.. you are only at 4
|
Many of the boating forums have a 10 post requirement before you can start posting pictures, etc. It deters the SPAMMERS.
I think THT and OSO both have the requirement, not sure about iBoats |
Give us some short posts then, in the mean time, of what you have going on.
Like engine build parts so far. Boat type, drive, exhaust, etc |
Posting pics
|
Almost there I’m hoping
|
Getting closer and closer
|
And a little bit closer
|
This posting 10 times is crazy
|
And 30 more seconds
|
1 more post I do believe
|

The engine builder said the cam in it would be fine for a boat....... https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1e689e044d.png Parts that came into new engine https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ac22d711a5.png this is the new engine |
And a performance boat would be my dreams... but I know w a stock engine, not quite sure what I could even do since the engine is all put together.. just worried that it’s gonna have to all be taken apart.. I couldn’t wrap my mind around that

Stock exhaust manifolds and risers ? If so, I’d stay with the Comp Cams Extreme Marine 256H which is 212,218 at .050” 112 LSA , and .447, .462 lift
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-cl12-232-3 With vortec heads, which you have, and 9:1-9.5:1 compression which i have no idea what you have, should make around 330hp or so with a 600-650 carb (tuned right) on your intake manifold . Prop it for around 4800rpm. Maybe 5k, but no more. If you had better exhaust and check to see if your valve springs and retainer to guide clearance can handle the higher lift, the 218/224 comp cams extreme marine rips even more. The larger 224 at .050” better for 383’s and with better exhaust of course. |
The exhaust that I bought there is no good? And so it’s looking like I’m gonna have to change the cam?🤦🏽♂️ I may just sell this damn boat if so.. tired of dickin with it. Was misguided by ppl who thought they knew what they was talking about.
|
Then run it. Maybe it won’t revert. Lol.
Why did you even ask. why did i even help. jeez. Deal with this at work too. Ie: reparing things. Get same drama. too much .Psychiatrists charge more than I do. Not sure why I don’t change careers and don’t have to get dirty. maybe i need a shrink lololol |
Yeah you definitely took it the wrong way.. I appreciate the help more than you know. I’m just frustrated at all of the time I’ve spent on making this boat everything and the thought of having to redo the whole process, just a very very hard hit to the head..
|
Most folks build auto motors, when building a boat you need a someone that knows boats not drag racing or circle tracks
My take of your issue and what SB said, is keep the exhaust you have an change the cam to the link in post 26. |
Alrighty bud.. just very frustrating in my head on what to do now exactly. Should I sell this motor and go and get a marine engine?.. or should I just change the cam out? Afraid of what else I might be missing
|
How much $ does it range with changing out that cam you guys thinking?

The cost to change out the cam listed at $245 for the cam at summitt Would need timing chain, intake and maybe valve cover gaskets to do that |
Yeah as in parts and labor range approximately off top of your head? Just to give me an idea.
|
Is the motor fully installed in the boat with exhaust, or does it look like this
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7d7ecb3a5f.jpg |
Yes buddy, still sitting like that
|
Then you can do it real easy.
Remove the balancer, timing chain cover, intake and valve covers. Remove rockers, push rods, lifters and cam Remove cam Rotate crank so ID mark is straight up Install cam, cam gear and chain so the cam gear ID mark faces crank mark Install lifters, push rods Rotate crank and one by one adjust rockers on push rods Put the rest back together Edit: do use lube on all bearing journals, and soak lifters prior to install |
Would the old engine cam work you think? Kind of wonder what was done to that engine because it sounded great. I’m trying to attach the video of it, but not letting me for some reason.
|
Video post
|
Is there a way I could send you this video bud? That way you can hear it?... because it definitely has a different cam in the v8 that I pulled out, sounded great. It didn’t have exhaust, but it is a video with it out of the water.
