Testing the steering

If it is the gimbel ring which I assume it is… I got one quote so far:
Gimbal ring=$1547.00
swivel pin=$320.00
steering leaver=$300.00
plug kit=$30.00
Swivel pin seal=$28.00
Boots=$300.00
Trim sender (if needed)=$160.00
Labor=$1000.00-$ 1500.00
And they’re pulling the engine…
what else can i do to diagnose my problem?

Can anyone explain to me what exactly I’m looking for to figure out why I have this much play in the outdrive? I don’t have a clear understand of how it all works, so that’s an issue. I’ve just been wiggling the outdrive back and forth trying to see the parts affected.

It’s tight when outdrive is turned towards the passenger side

The space that’s created turning the outdrive towards drivers side
