Doesn't take much to add.up $3k just for a minor refresh.

Just doing 12q oil change can be rough these days.

I have a 98 with a 330hp 454 in another boat that I am stripping, going to try and pull it tomorrow. but will have to strip the engine to see what kind of shape it is in. Have about 3 more days to be in the upper 40's then the propane heater will have to come out, we've been lucky for N/E Illinois so far almost 60 today. The Machinist I use charged me $300 to hot tank, hone it ,cam bearings, freeze plugs and polish the crank, but that was around 9 years ago. If the engine is too much, I'll sell it for parts and make a little $$ on it.

Well I got all the external parts off trying to take the harmonic Balancer off I snaped the first one now I have a MAC Puller on it and the Puller Bolt is twisting with a big Breaker on it any Ideas on getting it off, am thinking about seeing if my nephew has one for Diesels if that is heavier.

Happy New Year everyone!

You're using a tri-angular 3 bolt puller with the center fine thread main bolt?

Or using jaw'd style puller?

It shouldn't be that tight on the crank snout. Not rusted or anything?

Yes I am using a tri bolt puller With the Center fine thread bolt, I sprayed PB Blaster on it, will check it later and see if it loosened up. I left it under pressure.

Well I finally found a 2000, 454 complete out of a 6500 series GMC with 90k on it for $700 and it came with a Allison Trans that was rebuilt so I'm thinking I can get my money out of the trans, also have the all the electric accessories that I have no use for, so those are on F/B Marketplace and need to pick up another engine stand so I can tale the new engine apart. I would think it has forged internals. Any thoughts?

The short block of the L21 is pretty stout - about on par with the 454 Mag. Forged crank and pistons. Good find.

I'm trying to decide if I should put the Mag FI system back on it or go with a carb. If I go back to the FI system, do I have to go to Merc to get them? or is there another outlet.?

I assume your asking about the injectors when you say "go to merc and get them"? I do flow, clean and test these as part of my business, I also sell new originals and a lower cost upgrade injector if your talking 98 to 2001 with weber/pico maghetti marellis. IF you convert it to a carb, your first choice in intake should be performer rpm dual plane ,Smitty
