Mercury 500 EFI Noise..

Hello

My Mercury 500 EFI engine has 50 hours since it was rebuilt at an authorized workshop in Sweden

Now it makes a noise, small video !!!

https://dai.ly/k2dvC9KQhqKhIhCgHSA

What investigations do you recommend ??

If I had to remplace the hydraulic liftyers, the originals ( 849947T01 ) cost a fortune !!

Is there another good alternative ?

Thanks in advance for your help

To me, it definitely sounds like a lifter/rocker arm tapping. What all was done during the 'rebuild'?

Wildman_grafix 01-20-2025 08:00 AM

Who adjusted the pre load on the rockers?

F-2 Speedy 01-20-2025 09:48 AM

Get your self a new shop, obviously they dont know how to adjust the valves lash

Hello

Thanks you for your initial comments

Finding a good marine mechanic is not easy in Europe without driving 1000 miles on way !!!

In my location, I search a mechanic Corvette or Mustang for help ..
I have workshop manual n° 6 if needed

Thanks

Trevor Fowler from MidMo Marine Services posted this video a few years ago. It seems to work pretty well.

My audio sucks, but if it makes a noise like you guys say and engine was fine for 50hrs, a valve train piece coukd be broke or worn. Lifter, valvespring, rocker, stuck valve that bent s pushrod, or etc

TomZ 01-22-2025 04:30 PM

Aside from the noise, is it down on power? Maybe it's just my workstation, but I'm hearing an exhaust leak.

F-2 Speedy 01-22-2025 04:54 PM

I hear multiple rocker arms chattering........I lash valves in the firing order 1/4 turn of the crank puts that next cylinder on the base circle of the cam.....not like that video.1/2 turn down is pretty standard unless you're running Morels.....lol

BillK 01-23-2025 07:10 AM

If it was fine for the first 50 hours then it suddenly started making the noise then I doubt if it is the valve adjustment. Either a lifter has stuck or failed or something else has broken or come loose. Before you touch anything you need to call the shop that rebuilt the engine. Especially if there was a warranty. As soon as you touch it the warranty might be void. Call them and do what they say first.

I have heard exhaust manifold gaskets sound very similar and have fooled quite a few guys.

I missed the 50 hours of run time before the noise........Lux I think Johnson makes a replacement lifter for the 500............https://johnsonlifters.com/

Hello

Thank you all for your valuable help

The weather being less cold, I went to the hall.

I removed the valve covers, the spark plugs.

With strong lighting, I saw on of the lifters are the model with the tie bar !!!!

The valve of cylinder n° 2 has the most gap

Thanks

I'm not an engine builder, but on that loose rocker, it looks to me like the adjuster and lock are backed off a little. Also hard to say that if it was run a long time in that position if it has not started to beat up the lifter, and push rod. Any trash in the oil? If not, you might just re-adjust your valve train and run it again.

sutphen 30 01-26-2025 09:54 AM

how long have you run that engine?there sure doesn't look like oil has gotten to the top end.

bajalux 01-26-2025 10:32 AM

Hello

The lifters are like the Johnson picture.
Thanks for this reference

Recently during winterising, I requested an oil analys.
The result is good

rocker play like that heavily depends engine / valve train position. it’s common to have a little play in the rocker when springs are decompressed. I.e. on the up swing. when I say a little play. You can wiggle rockers back and forth a little.

with that being said…your video looks like there is up in down play. Not sure that looks normal.

Wildman_grafix 01-26-2025 01:01 PM

You know I would go through and readjust them all and fire the motor up, see how it sounds.

Sutphen does have a good comment, sure doesn't look like any oil in the top end, what is up with that? What was/is your oil pressure at idle and running?

sutphen 30 01-26-2025 05:36 PM

are you sure you have the oil lines on right?I'd check that

Did you rotate the engine and check the adjustment on all of them?? Is the rocker nut and polylock still snug??
I would at a minumum, remove that rocker and pushrod and inspect them for damage.

bajalux 02-25-2025 01:50 AM

Hello

The valve adjustement was done according to the manual n° 6

https://si3.photorapide.com/invites/...2/25a7rilp.jpg

It remains to reassemble to start with the water pipe ...

I hope that will be sufficient

bajalux 05-23-2025 11:16 AM

Hello

Bad news

I found this little piece with a magnet !!

https://si3.photorapide.com/invites/...5/23o1bgmn.jpg

I'm afraid to discover the rest when I dissamble the intake manifold !!

More to come

F-2 Speedy 05-23-2025 11:22 AM

Is that half of a valve stem keeper ?

BillK 05-23-2025 01:04 PM

Thats really tough to figure out. It really does not look like a valve lock. How big is that piece ? Take a better picture with a ruler next to it. See if you can get the focus better. And maybe a picture from a different angle.

LSXCJ 05-23-2025 01:18 PM

At first glance, that looks like a valve keeper..

F-2 Speedy 05-23-2025 01:42 PM

What ever it is it looks like its been broken, maybe lifter parts ?

bajalux 05-24-2025 01:29 AM

Hello
I took this piece out through the head window at the level of number 4

bajalux 08-08-2025 12:21 PM

Hello

On my Baja Outlaw, I have to remove the engine to acces the pulley !!

So I'm also going to remove the oil pan .....

sutphen 30 08-08-2025 06:06 PM

you have metal thru out the whole motor.its a total tear down and clean.hope you didn't hurt the crank.

Tartilla 08-09-2025 06:37 PM

Didn't OP mention he had an oil analysis done with no issues reported??

That open heopenner rocker cover really did not have a lot of oil on it anywhere.

Are these stock Merc lifters? Or Johnson's?

bajalux 08-10-2025 04:16 AM

Hello

The oil analys showed nothing alarming.

Regarding the oil on the rocker arms, it was a prolonged shutdown of several months,
and only the starter motor had been running for a few turns.

I'm thinking of installing a new Melling 10778 oil pump.

The lifters must have been cheap, with the part number engraved on them,
I couldn't identify anything !!

The news ones will be Johnson with the tie bar.

Thanks
